‘Tidal Flats of Korea Phase II,’ Centered on Jeonnam’s Tidal Flats, Receives ‘Green Light’ for Final UNESCO World Heritage Listing
IUCN Recommends World Heritage Listing… Recognizes Value for Core Biodiversity and Endangered Species Habitats; Final Decision to be Made at the 48th World Heritage Committee Meeting in Busan in July… Jeonnam Province to Strengthen Status as Center for Conservation and Management
(Muan·Suncheon = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = A green light has been given for the expanded listing of ‘Tidal Flats of Korea Phase II,’ which includes the tidal flats of Jeonnam, as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Jeollanam-do announced that it received a ‘recommendation for listing’ for ‘Tidal Flats of Korea Phase II’ from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an advisory body for UNESCO World Natural Heritage. Consequently, the likelihood of a final listing decision at the 48th World Heritage Committee Meeting, to be held in Busan this coming July, has significantly increased.
Following on-site inspections and a review of documentation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) highly assessed that the ‘Tidal Flats of Korea, Phase II’ meets the World Heritage Criterion (X). Criterion (X) is a strict standard applied to natural habitats that are of the greatest importance and significance for the conservation of endangered species and biodiversity. The tidal flats of Jeollanam-do have been internationally recognized for their unrivaled ecological value as a key stopover point on the East Asia-Australasian Flyway and a rich habitat for diverse marine life.
This application for expanded listing centers on adding the tidal flats of Yeosu, Goheung, and Muan in Jeollanam-do, as well as Seosan in Chungcheongnam-do, to the existing tidal flats (Boseong-Suncheon, Sinan, Gochang, and Seocheon) that were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2021. Once the expanded listing is finally confirmed, ‘Tidal Flats of Korea’ will be reorganized from the existing four regions into a total of six zones (components): the Boseong-Suncheon-Yeosu-Goheung Tidal Flats, the Sinan-Muan Tandoman Tidal Flats, the Muan Hamhaeman Tidal Flats, the Gochang Tidal Flats, the Seocheon Tidal Flats, and the Seosan Tidal Flats.
In particular, three of the six zones—Boseong-Suncheon-Yeosu-Goheung, Sinan-Muan Tandoman, and Muan Hamhaeman—which constitute the majority, will be located in Jeollanam-do. This result proves that the tidal flats of Jeollanam-do are the undisputed 'core axis' of the Korean Tidal Flats World Heritage Site, and it is expected that Jeollanam-do will further solidify its status as the center of tidal flat conservation and management in the future.
Furthermore, the 48th World Heritage Committee meeting, where the decision on inscription will be made, holds added significance as it is the first meeting to be held in Korea (Busan) since the country joined the World Heritage Convention in 1988.
Jeonnam Province plans to activate a close cooperative system with the National Heritage Administration, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, relevant cities and counties, and local communities to achieve final inscription. In addition, the province plans to further strengthen the preservation of World Heritage values and management systems by faithfully implementing the recommendations set forth by the IUCN.
