The Real History of Politicians Deceiving and Squeezing the Blood out of Honam
- Novelist Lee Jae-woon
June 6th was Memorial Day; I dedicate this writing to the spirits of the naval soldiers who died serving in Admiral Yi Sun-sin's corps.
When people think of the Imjin War, they only know the hero Yi Sun-sin, but they rarely know who the naval soldiers were who actually sacrificed their lives, suffered injuries, and lost comrades under him. Even Eo Yeong-dam, who led Yi Sun-sin's fleet as the magistrate of Gwangyang and a lieutenant commander with uncanny knowledge of the South Sea's waterways, is not a formal meritorious subject. Jeong Geoll, a veteran general who served as the naval commander of Chungcheong Province and the naval commander of Gyeongsang Province during the war, is also not a Seonmu Gongsin. Song Hee-rip, a military officer and scout commander of the Jeolla Left Naval Command who fought on the front lines and commanded battles wearing Yi Sun-sin's armor after his death, is also not a Seonmu Gongsin. Na Dae-yong, a naval inspector and officer of the Jeolla Left Naval Command who actually built the Turtle Ships and died in the Battle of Sacheon, was excluded on the grounds that he had no record of beheading and presenting the heads of Japanese soldiers. Sin Ho, who fought valiantly in numerous naval battles as the Magistrate of Nakan and a commander of the naval forces, and whose military achievements were highly praised by Yi Sun-sin in official reports, is also not a Seonmu Gongsin.
After the Imjin War ended, the incompetent and cunning King Seonjo Yi Gyun bestowed the title of Hoseong Gongsin upon as many as 86 officials who had scurried along his escape route, while limiting the number of Seonmu Gongsin—who honored military commanders who risked their lives in battle—to just 18. This left a historical bitterness, as numerous giants among Yi Sun-sin's subordinates who had distinguished themselves as naval commanders or generals—such as Eo Yeong-dam, Jeong Geoll, Song Hee-rip, and Na Dae-yong (though righteous army commanders were conspicuously absent)—could not be included in the official list of meritorious subjects. Ironically, even among the Hoseong Gongsin who were credited with defending the palace, as many as 24 eunuchs were densely listed.
Now, even if you have read this far, there is something you have missed. If you have any conscience, place your hand on your heart and answer this question: Who exactly were the naval soldiers who boarded Yi Sun-sin's fleet and died? Where do the names of those people appear?
I speak the truth. The naval forces that fought against the Japanese in Yi Sun-sin's fleet totaled between 20,000 and 30,000 (organizationally, the regular troops under the command of the Admiral were around 10,000). Where on earth were the naval forces recruited to replenish the surplus caused by death, disease, injury, and desertion?
Who exactly were the people who saved Joseon in this war only to die or be wounded themselves? Here, you must straighten your collars. I speak of the origins of our naval victims who died, were wounded, or fell ill on that cold and desolate battlefield of death. Their names are not recorded, but their hometowns remain clearly visible in this way. Counties and prefectures under the jurisdiction of Gyeongsang Usuyeong (Total 21): Jinju (Pre-existing Jinju was the Army, while coastal areas such as Sacheon under Jinju-bu were the Navy. The remaining counties and prefectures must also be considered in the context of the organizational structure of the time), Geoje, Goseong, Namhae, Sacheon, Hadong, Gonyang, Changwon, Chilwon, Haman, Jinhae / Inland permanent areas (towns supplying military provisions and troops): Hapcheon, Chogye, Uiryeong, Samga, Hamyang, Sancheong, Geochang, Anui, Yeongsan, Hyeonpung
Counties and prefectures under the jurisdiction of Jeolla Jwasuyeong (Eastern coast of Jeonnam): Centered on Yeosu, Suncheon, Nakgan, Boseong, Gwangyang, Heungyang (Goheung) / Bangdapjin, Sadojin, Yeodojin, Nokdojin, Balpojin
Counties and prefectures under the jurisdiction of Jeolla Usuyeong (Southwestern Jeonnam and coast of Jeonbuk): Centered on Haenam, Mokpo, Jindo, Wando, Gangjin, Yeongam, Muan, Naju, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, Buan, Gochang, Mujang, Heungdeok, Mangyeong
Chungcheong Suyeong Jurisdictional counties and prefectures (Chungnam, Chungbuk, and parts of the western coast of Gyeonggi): With Ocheonseong Fortress in Boryeong as the main headquarters, Seocheon, Biin, Nampo, Taean, Seosan, Haemi, Dangjin, Myeoncheon, Asan, and Sinchang / Inland permanent areas: Gongju, Cheongju, Imcheon, Hongsan, Hansan, Jeonui, Yeongi, and Yesan. Naval forces conscripted from the above regions sweated, shed blood, and lost their lives under Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Although many were from Chungcheong and Gyeongsang provinces, the main force was undeniably Honam, home to the Jeolla Left Naval Command and Jeolla Right Naval Command. While land battles were intense in Gyeongsang and Chungcheong provinces, making supply and troop conscription difficult, Honam, which defended the South Sea, saw more soldiers conscripted as the fighting intensified, and the soldiers were pushed to their limits to provide military supplies. During the Imjin War, only Jeolla Province survived intact, breathing life back into the nation; however, during the Jeongyu War, even Jeolla Province was ravaged, causing hardship for the coastal villages under the jurisdiction of Jeolla Usuyeong. Most of those who followed Admiral Won Gyun during the Jeongyu War and were annihilated at Chilcheollyang were from this region.
Furthermore, there is another fact that must not be forgotten. During the Imjin War, Jeolla Province, the granary of the region, was the only area that remained unoccupied by the Japanese forces. Thanks to this, rice and weapons produced in Jeolla could be continuously supplied to Uiju and Pyongyang. Jeolla Province was Joseon's largest military supply base. Do you know who led ships to supply rice, arrows, and weapons when Kwon Yul's Honam Army fought tens of thousands of Japanese troops at Haengju Fortress? It was the naval forces that came up from Honam. Also, do you know who the monk soldiers were, who made up half of Kwon Yul's army? The commander was Monk Cheoyeong from Geumsansa Temple in Gimje, and the monk troops under his command were primarily monks from temples in Jeollabuk-do.
There were also about 1,500 monk troops under Yi Sun-sin; they were mainly composed of monks from Heungguksa Temple in Yeosu, as well as monks from Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam and Hwaeomsa Temple in Gurye. It is a moving story that monks, whose fundamental precept is not to kill, rose up from across the nation to participate in the Battle of Pyongyang Fortress, the Battle of Geumsan, the Battle of Yi Sun-sin, and the Battle of Haengju Fortress.
Do not forget that the two battles of Jinju Fortress in the past were not merely fought to defend Gyeongsang-do, but were wars to stop the Japanese forces attempting to enter Jeolla-do, and that soldiers from Chungcheong-do joined the desperate resistance at Jinju Fortress in large numbers. The people of Jeolla saved the country, and the people of Yeongnam and Chungcheong fought together to the death to defend that very Jeolla.
The commander was Monk Cheoyeong from Geumsansa Temple in Gimje, and the monks under his command were monks from temples in Jeollabuk-do. Furthermore, the reason 1,500 righteous army soldiers and Buddhist monks—rather than regular troops—fought to the death in the Battle of Geumsan in Chungcheong Province was to block the Japanese forces attempting to advance southward into Honam. Countless people sacrificed their lives to defend Honam, from Geumsan in the north to Jinju in the south. One can only imagine how important Jeolla Province must have been for them to fight in this manner. Yet, Jeolla Province, which produced the precious rice that sustained the nation until the Joseon Dynasty, is becoming marginalized in the modern industrial era. During the Joseon Dynasty, when rice was as precious as semiconductors, Honam was known as the nation's granary; following the implementation of the Daedong Law, it produced approximately 250,000 to 300,000 sacks annually and sent them to Seoul. It was a time when Honam shouldered 50% of the national treasury.
Because Honam was the most prosperous region, it has always suffered hardships throughout history. This was also the case during the Donghak Revolution at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. As religious ideology (Donghak) intruded upon the pure revolutionary spirit of the peasants and Heungseon Daewongun’s political forces (led by leaders such as Jeon Bong-jun) guided them, this revolution unfortunately became the trigger that drew in foreign powers. The royal court, which should have defended the nation, was incompetent; ultimately, by inviting in Qing and Japanese troops, Joseon inevitably set itself on the path to ruin. Honam was once the region most favored by corrupt officials in history, but sadly, it is now degenerating into a place that extorts votes instead of rice.
Therefore, I, a native of Chungcheong Province living in Yongin, speak out. Currently, our Southern Gyeonggi Semiconductor Belt serves as a massive pillar of the national treasury. It consists of Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, and Icheon. Just as Honam saved Joseon from crisis by shouldering half of the national treasury during the Imjin War, today our semiconductor cities are steadfastly generating national wealth to sustain the Republic of Korea.
This local election was a fierce choice made by the citizens of Yongin to protect that precious semiconductor industrial complex and safeguard the nation's future. Just as the people of Honam defended the country with blood and sweat during the Imjin War and the Jeongyu War, the citizens of Yongin have now protected the semiconductor cluster, the inexhaustible wellspring of national wealth.
On the other hand, today's Honam is industrially devastated, and its foundation for self-reliance has collapsed. Consequently, politicians demand votes by waving sweet bundles of money such as subsidies, basic income, and the Sunshine Pension. However, this is an insult to the history of Honam's great soul.
We must not forget the grace of Honam, which fed the nation with 300,000 sacks of rice in taxes during the Joseon Dynasty. Now, it is the turn of our Southern Gyeonggi Semiconductor Belt to proudly contribute tens or hundreds of trillions of won in national taxes to repay the dedication shown by Honam in those days. The national taxes we contribute will flow through the central government back to Jeolla, Chungcheong, and Gyeongsang provinces, serving as a catalyst to revitalize the regions.
This local election was a fierce choice made by the citizens of Yongin to protect the precious semiconductor industrial complex and safeguard the nation's future. Yongin City, where I reside, receives 10% of national taxes as local taxes, pays 5% to Gyeonggi Province, and barely manages its local government finances with the remaining 5%. Since the central government takes 95% of the taxes and distributes them nationwide, people in other regions have no need to envy us. We simply feel a sense of pride and responsibility knowing that the source of those taxes is the Southern Gyeonggi Semiconductor Belt.
June 6th was Memorial Day. I offer a deep moment of silence for the spirits of Honam who, under the shadow of the great hero Yi Sun-sin, sweated, shed blood, and even sacrificed their lives namelessly. I also offer a deep moment of silence for the countless spirits who gave their lives at Jinju Fortress and Geumsan Fortress to defend Honam.
The Republic of Korea exists today because of you. You are the very essence and soul of Jeolla Province. Now, let us neither be exploited nor exploit others. Let us reclaim the dignified spirit of Honam that saved the nation in the past, and let us all work hard in our respective places to strive harder for the sake of our future descendants.
Yongin City receives 10% of national taxes as local taxes, pays 5% to Gyeonggi Province, and barely manages its own affairs. Democratic Party of Korea, do not deceive Honam. People Power Party, do not forget the kindness of Honam. Voters in Honam have nowhere to turn for support. Even though they find the Democratic Party repulsive, they have no choice but to be dragged along. At least the Democratic Party provides them with fodder. The People Power Party doesn't even provide that fodder. That is why, at one time, they gave their votes en masse to the People's Party, but nothing changed; at another time, they gave their votes en masse to the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, but not a speck of dust changed either. What are the people of Honam supposed to do?
