Blue House: "We take Roh Tae-ak's resignation seriously... Strict follow-up measures by the National Election Commission are appropriate"

Roh Tae-ak stated, "I will faithfully participate in all procedures to confirm the National Election Commission's responsibility regarding this incident, including a parliamentary investigation, and I will by no means evade any responsibility if it arises from the results."

The Blue House announced on the 5th that it "takes the expressions of resignation by National Election Commission Chairman Roh Tae-ak and Secretary General Heo Cheol-hoon very seriously."

Stateing this in a press notice this afternoon, the Blue House said, "The National Election Commission must provide a sufficient explanation and take strict follow-up measures that the public can accept regarding the significant concerns caused to the people during the election process."

It added, "They must also responsibly take measures to inspect overall election management and improve the system to restore public trust." This appears to be a move to continue distancing itself from the issue while reiterating its existing stance that it is unrelated to the unprecedented infringement of citizens' right to vote caused by the ballot shortage.

Earlier this afternoon, Chairman Roh held a press conference at the National Election Commission in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, to announce his resignation along with a public apology regarding the ballot shortage that occurred on the main day of the June 3 local elections; Secretary General Heo Cheol-hoon also resigned at the same time. Chairman Noh stated, "The shortage of ballot papers has damaged the public's high level of interest and active expression of will regarding local autonomy, which was demonstrated through voter turnout."

He added, "As the Chairman of the National Election Commission, I feel a sense of profound sorrow and infinite responsibility regarding this situation, which undermines public trust in election management and leads to distrust in the election process."

He further stated, "I will faithfully participate in all procedures to confirm the Commission's responsibility regarding this incident, including a parliamentary investigation, and I will never evade responsibility if there is anything I must take accountability for following the results."
