Park Sung-hoon, Spokesperson for the People Power Party: “Ballot Shortage Crisis... A Disaster Trampling on Democracy”

- Condemning the National Election Commission’s Incompetence and Dereliction of Duty

- Urging President Lee Jae-myung to Express a Responsible Stance

- Demanding the Democratic Party to Immediately Accept a Parliamentary Investigation

The National Election Commission’s complacent administration and irresponsible attitude have infringed upon the people’s sacred right to vote. Furthermore, criticizing President Lee Jae-myung’s silence, he urged the Democratic Party to stop selective justice and immediately engage in a parliamentary investigation.

Park Sung-hoon, Senior Spokesperson for the People Power Party, stated this during a press briefing at the National Assembly Communication Center on the afternoon of the 5th, characterizing the recent ballot shortage during the June 3 local elections as an unprecedented election management disaster that has shaken the very foundation of South Korean democracy.

First, Senior Spokesperson Park Sung-hoon opened his remarks by pointing out that the ballot shortage during the June 3 local elections was not merely a mistake by field staff, but a total failure of the national system. Chief Spokesperson Park criticized the situation, stating, “The unprecedented shortage of ballot papers has left an indelible stain on the history of elections in the Republic of Korea,” and added, “This is a total failure of the national system that clearly infringes upon the people’s sacred right to vote.”

Furthermore, noting that the National Election Commission (NEC) secured a budget for ballot production amounting to 110% of the electorate but only proceeded to print 50–55% of the ballots—a mere half of the total—he sharply rebuked the NEC, saying, “The absurd behavior of securing the full budget but failing to print the ballots is a clear dereliction of duty that deceives the public.”

Regarding the NEC’s explanation that it minimized ballot printing out of concern for election fraud allegations, Chief Spokesperson Park rebuked the move, calling it “like burning down the whole house to catch a flea.” He further asserted, “The NEC’s shallow measure of blocking voting rights under the pretext of preventing election fraud conspiracy theories is instead providing grounds for social division and refusal to accept the election results.”

Listing the National Election Commission’s repeated outrageous behaviors from the past, such as "basket voting," the removal of ballots, and corruption involving preferential hiring of executives’ children, he pointed out, “Today’s disaster is the result of hiding behind the sanctuary of being an independent body under the Constitution, refusing external audits, and indiscriminately handing down slap-on-the-wrist punishments.”

Chief Spokesperson Park particularly emphasized that this situation is provoking the anger of future generations, pointing out that “the movement of condemnation initiated in university campuses stems from a distrust of the fairness and transparency of democracy.” He urged the Commission to immediately disclose all data and reveal in detail the status of ballot printing and distribution by region, as well as the decision-making process. He warned, “If they refuse to disclose data or attempt to downplay or conceal it, the public will perceive this as the beginning of yet another wave of suspicion.”

Meanwhile, Chief Spokesperson Park continued his sharp criticism directed at President Lee Jae-myung. He raised his voice, asking, “Why is the President, who raised his voice regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu or the Starbucks issue, remaining silent on a matter concerning the people’s right to vote?” He added, “As the ultimate person responsible for state affairs, merely offering incomprehensible commentary as if watching a fire from across the river is the height of irresponsibility.” He urged the President to stop his detached rhetoric and demonstrate a strong commitment to reform, a thorough investigation into the truth, and accountability for those responsible.

Finally, Chief Spokesperson Park demanded that the Democratic Party immediately accept a parliamentary investigation, asking, “Why is the Democratic Party, which abused special prosecutors and parliamentary inquiries, remaining silent on this incident?” He argued, “Calling for a truth investigation only on matters favorable to themselves is nothing more than selective justice.”

Furthermore, Chief Spokesperson Park stated, “The People Power Party will pursue the truth behind this ballot shortage incident to the very end,” adding, “We will hold those responsible for shaking democracy and destroying public trust accountable to the end, in the name of the people.”   hang5247@hanmail.net
