오강남 교수(캐나다 리자이나대 명예교수)는 “쇄락하는 종교, 다시 찾아야 하는 종교”라는 글에서 종교를 두 가지로 분류하고 있다고 설(說)했습니다.
이 분은 비교종교학 전공 학자입니다. “세계 종교들을 연구해 보고 얻은 결론 비슷한 것은, 세계 거의 모든 종교에 표층(表層)이 있고 심층(深層)이 있다"는 지적이었습니다.
이 글에서 “표층 종교는 무조건적인 ‘믿음’을 강조하는 반면 심층 종교는 ‘이해’와 ‘깨달음’을 중요시합니다. 표층 종교에서는 자기 종교에서 주어진 교리나 율법을 무조건 받아들이고 따르면 거기에 따른 보상이 있을 것이라 생각합니다. 심층 종교에서는 지금의 나를 얽매고 있는 선입견이나 고정관념에서 벗어나 지금의 내가 죽고 새로운 나로 태어날 때 필연적으로 따라오는 깨달음을 종교에서 가장 중요한 요소로 여깁니다. 모든 종교적인 의례나 활동도 궁극적으로는 깨달음에 이르기 위한 수단으로 생각합니다”고 분석했습니다.
필자는 지난 2012년 1월12일 웃음종교 교주를 선언했습니다. 그러하니 올해로 14년째 입니다. 필자는 웃음종교 교주를 선언할 무렵, 웃음종교 10계명을 천명했었습니다. “이 계명이 널리널리 전파되어 웃음세상을 만드는데 기여했으면 합니다”고 밝혔습니다.

웃음종교 10계명 전체를 소개하면 “▲사람은 웃기 위해서 이 세상에 태어났다 ▲한번 뿐인 삶이다, 웃음의 자유를 누려라 ▲내가 웃음의 주인이다, 스스로 웃음의 지존이 돼라 ▲웃음은 큰 욕망이다, 웃음욕망의 영토를 넓혀라 ▲웃어라, 그리하면 기뻐지고 행복해진다 ▲내면에 존재하는 웃음 댐에서 마음껏 웃음을 퍼다 사용하라 ▲웃음이 곧 구원이다, 매일 웃어 매일 구원받자 ▲웃을 때는 한낮의 해처럼 환하게 웃어라 ▲웃음 속에 들어있는 기쁨물질로 우울을 녹여버려라 ▲세상을 향해서 웃음폭탄을 던져라”입니다. 웃음종교의 10계명 속에 제가 만든 종교의 기본정신이 담겨 있습니다.
이 계명의 앞부분에서는 “▲사람은 웃기 위해서 이 세상에 태어났다 ▲한번 뿐인 삶이다, 웃음의 자유를 누려라 ▲내가 웃음의 주인이다, 스스로 웃음의 지존이 돼라”고 제시했습니다.
이 내용들만 보아도, 웃음종교가 어떤 종교를 지향하는지를 알 수 있습니다.
오강남 캐나다 리자이나대 명계교수는 “표층 종교는 ‘신은 하늘에 있고 인간은 땅에 있다’는 식으로 신과 나 사이에 ‘영원한 심연’만이 있을 뿐이라고 생각합니다. 신과 인간이 관계를 맺으려면 신이 그 심연을 뛰어넘어 인간에게로 오거나 인간이 하늘을 향해 큰 소리로 외쳐야 된다고 믿습니다. 좀 어려운 말로 하면 신의 초월(超越)을 강조하는 것입니다. 이와 대조적으로 심층 종교는 신이 내 밖에도 계시지만 더욱 중요한 것으로 내 안에도 계시다고 생각합니다. 신의 초월과 동시에 내재(內在)를 주장하는데, 이를 범재신론(汎在神論=panentheism)의 입장이라 합니다.”고 분석하고 있습니다.
여기에 그치지 않고 “표층 종교는 주로 내세 지향적입니다. 죽어서 극락이나 천당에 가는 것을 중요하게 생각합니다. 그러나 심층 종교는 ‘지금 여기’에서 이웃과 사회와 인류를 위해 내가 할 일이 무엇인가 찾아 의미 있는 삶을 살려고 합니다.”고 덧붙입니다.
