[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 의령군 대표 여름 농산물인 초당옥수수가 올해 첫 수확과 함께 본격 출하에 들어갔다.

의령군은 20일 칠곡면 옥재규 농가에서 올해 첫 초당옥수수 수확이 이뤄지며 본격적인 출하가 시작됐다고 밝혔다.

군에 따르면 올해는 평년보다 따뜻한 기후와 재배 관리가 맞물리면서 품질 좋은 초당옥수수가 생산됐다.

의령군은 칠곡면과 낙서면을 중심으로 약 101ha 규모 초당옥수수 재배단지를 운영하고 있다. 비옥한 토양과 풍부한 일조량을 바탕으로 생산된 의령 초당옥수수는 높은 당도와 아삭한 식감이 특징이다.

초당옥수수는 일반 옥수수보다 당 함량과 수분 함량이 높아 생식이 가능하고, 전자레인지 조리만으로도 간편하게 먹을 수 있어 여름철 간식용 소비가 꾸준히 늘고 있다.

군은 이번 첫 출하를 시작으로 낙서면 등 주요 재배지역에서도 순차적으로 수확과 출하가 이어질 것으로 보고 있다.

의령군 농업기술센터 관계자는 “고품질 초당옥수수 생산과 품질 관리에 집중해 농가 소득 향상과 지역 농산물 브랜드 경쟁력을 높여 나가겠다”고 말했다.
