임 의원은 14일 발표한 성명을 통해 “안전은 안중에도 없는 지역 정치인들의 사적 유용 의혹에 대한 제보가 접수됐다”며 “군민 앞에 진실을 떳떳하게 밝히고 위법한 부분은 철저한 수사를 받아야 한다”고 주장했다.
민주당 측이 공개한 제보에 따르면, 2023년 4월 16일 죽변스카이레일 선로에서 화재가 발생한 뒤 울진군은 운행 중지 조치를 내렸고, 사흘 뒤에는 한국전기안전공사의 점검 결과가 나올 때까지 무기한 운행 중단을 지시한 것으로 알려졌다.
그러나 민주당은 점검 결과가 나오지 않은 상황에서 돌연 운행 재개 결정이 내려졌다고 주장했다. 임 의원 측은 “당시 한국전기안전공사의 현장 점검이 지연돼 최소 한 달 이상 결과가 필요하다는 설명이 있었음에도, 4월 28일 울진군청 문화관광과가 29일부터 운영을 재개하라고 통보했다”고 밝혔다.

아울러 민주당은 한국자유총연맹 울진군지부 의 지방선거 개입 의혹도 함께 제기했다. 임 의원 측은 “자유총연맹 간부들이 단체대화방에서 국민의힘 경선 여론조사 참여를 독려하고 연령대·당원 여부 응답 방식까지 구체적으로 안내했다”며 “정치적 중립 의무가 있는 법정단체의 조직적 선거 개입 정황”이라고 주장했다.
임 의원은 “일당독점 체제 속에서 지역 권력이 감시와 견제를 받지 않으면서 각종 비리와 특혜 의혹이 반복되고 있다”며 “이번 지방선거를 통해 지역 정치 권력 구조를 바꾸지 않는다면 주민 권익 침해는 계속될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
한편 이번 의혹 제기는 민주당 측 주장과 제보 내용을 토대로 한 것으로, 손병복 후보 측의 공식 해명 여부와 관계기관의 사실 확인이 뒤따를 것으로 보인다.
