현불사 설송 스님의 예언
○…필자(웃음종교 교주)는 기자생활을 하면서 여러 예언자 분들을 만났다. 예언자들을 좋아했다. 내가 그 분들을, 즐거운 마음으로 찾아 나섰다. 대한불교 불승종 소속의 사찰인 현불사(경북 봉화)의 설송 주지스님도 만난 적이 있다. 일부러 그 사찰을 찾아갔었다.
필자는 박정희 전 대통령을 암살한 김재규 전 중앙정보부장의 친 동생인 김항규 씨와의 단독 인터뷰를 가졌던 유일한 기자이다. 1979년 10.26 사건이 발생한 이후, 김항규씨는 설송 스님의 비호 아래 현불사에서 숨어 살았다. 이 때 필자와 만나 단독 인터뷰가 성사됐다.
그런데 현불사의 주지였던 설송 스님은 대 예언자(豫言者)였다. 1992년 12월18일 대통령 선거에서 김영삼 후보가 대통령에 당선된 이후, 다음 대통령은 호남출신인 김대중이 당선된다고 예언, 그 예언이 적중(的中)된, 예언자였다.
제15대 대선을 약 1년 앞둔 1996년 10월 20일, 김대중 당시 대선 후보는 경북 봉화군에 위치한 현불사를 직접 방문했다. 당시는 정치권 물밑에서 'DJ(김대중) 필패론'이 제기되는 등 당선 가능성이 확실 하지 않던 시기였다. 설송 스님은 김대중 후보와 단둘이 만난 자리에서 "내년 대통령 선거에서 당신이 당선된다. 내가 목숨을 걸고 보장한다"라며 확고한 예언을 건넸다. 이때 사진을 찍었는데, 사진에서 빛이 발(發)하는, '발광(發光)하는 현상'이 생겨났다. 사찰 내에 일명 '발광탑'이 세워지기도 했다. 현불사의 경내에는 1999년 세워진 '김대중 대통령 방문기념 비석'이 실재한다. 비석에는, 김대중 전 대통령이 현불사를 방문하던 날 사찰 내 영령보탑에 오색 빛이 발했다. 이것이 대통령 당선을 예지한 상서로운 징조였다는 내용이 기록되어 있다. 김대중 후보가 대통령에 당선된 직후, 설송 스님의 대선 승리 예언이 적중했다는 이유로, 김대중 전 대통령이 설송 스님을 청와대로 초청, 감사의 인사를 전했다. 김 전 대통령의 차남인 김홍업 전 의원이 직접 스님을 청와대로 직접 모시고 갈 만큼, 두터운 신뢰를 보여줬다. 현불사는 '대선 예언 적중 사찰'로 전국적인 유명 사찰이 됐다. 이후 노태우, 김영삼 전 대통령은 물론 이회창, 이한동, 박태준, 추미애 등 여야를 막론한 수많은 거물급 정재계 인사들이 조언을 얻기 위해 현불사를 찾아가기도 했다. 예언 적중의 힘이 작용했다. 큰 예언자 설송 스님. 그 분은 지난 2009년 향년 91세로 입적했다.

I even met Abbot Seolsong of Hyeonbulsa Temple (Bonghwa, North Gyeongsang Province), a temple affiliated with the Korean Buddhist Bulseungjong Order. I had made a special trip to visit that temple.
