그 반대로 자본주의와 현대 문명인 인터넷에 의한 알고리즘이란 유령도 떡하니 인류 앞에 나타나 인류사회를 광폭적(廣幅的)으로 지배하고 있다. 우리 눈에 보이지는 않지만 우리의 소비 습관, 생각, 투표 향방까지 결정하는 디지털 데이터와 자본의 흐름이 이런 유형이다. 신(新) 자유주의 유령도 있다. 명확한 형체는 없으나 전 지구적 경제 규칙을 지배하는 보이지 않는 손으로 존재한다. 존재론적 맥락의 유령, 즉 심리 및 영적 존재도 존재한다. 과학적·생물학적 관점에서 유령은 증명된 바 없다. 그럼에도 인류 역사 속에서 유령이라는 개념은 늘 존재해 왔다. 과학적인 의미의 유령은 저주파 소음, 자기장 변화, 혹은 뇌의 일시적인 착각(가위눌림 등)으로 인해 발생하는 환각 현상으로 설명되기도 한다.
