Blue House: "74.62 million barrels of crude oil secured in May... 87% of last year's average"

Kang Hoon-sik: "Diversifying not only importing countries but also tanker routes... Securing additional volumes from the U.S. and Africa to reduce dependence on the Middle East by 13 percentage points, from the existing 69% to 56%."

The Blue House announced on the 24th, "It has been 56 days since the outbreak of the Middle East war, but with 74.62 million barrels secured for May—equivalent to 87% of last year's monthly average import volume—there is no need to worry significantly about supply disruptions."

Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik conveyed this during a briefing at the Chunchugwan (Blue House press center) that afternoon, stating, "We have secured additional volumes from the U.S. and Africa, reducing our dependence on the Middle East by 13 percentage points, from the existing 69% to 56%."

He added, "We are diversifying not only the importing countries but also the oil tanker routes," noting, "We have confirmed plans to import 23.99 million barrels from Saudi Arabia and 16 million barrels from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in May via alternative routes unrelated to the Strait of Hormuz. This is the result of a swift response achieved through the concerted efforts of the government and the private sector."

He also stated, "As the government has decided to expand support for companies diversifying their import sources, we expect the diversification of crude oil import sources to accelerate further in the future."

Regarding issues concerning naphtha and the plastics and vinyl bags produced by processing it, he added, "Concerns about supply instability on the ground remain, and the secured inventory for naphtha and basic petrochemicals is marked in orange, indicating a one-month supply."

He further stated, "We expect the indicators to turn yellow one month from now, once the support for naphtha import unit prices and price differences included in the supplementary budget is actually implemented and the secured 2.1 million tons of naphtha are introduced sequentially starting from the end of April."

Director Kang noted, "There is significant concern on the ground regarding the current asphalt supply," adding, "It is marked in red to reflect this situation."

He also added, "We cannot let our guard down yet," noting, "International oil and raw material prices remain high, so the impact of the Middle East war on perceived prices may be just beginning."

Meanwhile, regarding the application of the 'special long-term ownership deduction for non-resident single-home owners,' it was stated that "discussions are underway at the government level, but nothing has been decided."
