The Blue House stated on the 23rd (local time) that "consultations are being delayed because it is true that the issue regarding (the U.S. company) Coupang is affecting the South Korea-U.S. security negotiations."
National Security Advisor Wi Sung-rak conveyed this during a briefing at the Hanoi Press Center in Vietnam this afternoon, saying, "We are holding extensive discussions with the U.S. side based on the principle that the Coupang issue proceeds according to legal procedures, while the South Korea-U.S. security negotiations proceed as negotiations."
He added, "Since this situation does not benefit the entire South Korea-U.S. alliance, we are taking the position that the agreement must be concluded as soon as possible."
Regarding the transfer of wartime operational control, he also stated that it is "difficult to view it as political expediency" in response to remarks by U.S. Forces Korea Commander Xavier Brunson that "political expediency should not override conditions."
He continued, "Of course, military aspects cannot be disregarded, but this is fundamentally a matter of political decision," adding, "The decision is made by the leaders of both governments."
The Blue House In addition, he stated, "Dialogue between the diplomatic and military authorities of South Korea and the United States is continuing, and we will continue to convey Korea's position," adding, "We will strive to transfer wartime operational control as soon as possible without any gaps in the military sector or damage to the ROK-U.S. cooperation system."
Regarding the recent request by Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives to stop discrimination against U.S. companies such as Coupang, conveyed through Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha, Director Wi said, "We have taken note of it, and we are currently contacting U.S. lawmakers to explain the issue and make efforts to enhance understanding."
Previously, 54 members of the "Republican Research Committee," a group of Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives, sent a letter requesting a halt to discriminatory regulations against U.S. companies in Korea, stating that "the Korean government is launching a government-wide attack on Coupang using a low-sensitivity information leak incident as a pretext."
