천연기념물(제 53호)로 지정된 진돗개는 전남 진도군에서 집중적으로 사육되는 명견(名犬)이다.
지난 2023년 진도군 내에서 등록·관리되는 진돗개는 약 1,200~1,300여 마리 정도. 전남 진도군은 천연기념물 순수 혈통 보존을 위해 진돗개 심사를 거쳐 등록된 개들을 관리하고 있다. 천연기념물로 관리되는 진돗개는 약 1천 마리. 최근에는 2027년까지 등록된 진돗개 200마리 내외를 선발, 품종 유지-관리 중이다.
진도군에서는 연간 3천 마리 이상의 새끼 개들이 태어나고 있는 것으로 보고되어 진다. 이 가운데 1,900여 마리가 다른 지역으로 판매·반출되고 있다. 국내-외로 판매된다.
미국 등지에서 진돗개를 키우는 애견가들이 늘어나는데, 그 이유는 주인에게 충성하는 충성도(忠誠度)가 매우 높다는 때문인 것으로 알려진다.
