목포시는 지난 11일 조석훈 목포시장 권한대행 주재로 ‘목포항 및 배후부지 기능별 재배치 TF회의’를 개최하고, 목포항의 미래 발전 전략을 논의했다고 밝혔다. 이날 회의에는 시 관계 부서를 비롯해 학계 교수, 해양수산 전문가, 항만 관계자 등이 참석해 항만 기능 재편의 구체적인 방향과 부서 간 협력 방안을 공유했다.
현재 목포항은 어선, 여객, 물류 기능이 복합적으로 섞여 있어 항만 효율성이 저하되고, 특히 북항의 경우 어선 과밀로 인한 안전 문제가 지속적으로 제기돼 왔다. 기상 악화 시에는 최대 8중 이상 겹치기 접안이 발생하는 등 구조적인 한계에 직면한 상태다. 또한 내항 역시 어선과 여객 기능이 혼재돼 관광 활성화에 걸림돌이 되어 왔다.
이에 목포시는 이러한 구조적 문제점을 해결하고 항만의 미래 경쟁력을 확보하기 위해 ‘목포 큰그림 프로젝트’를 본격 추진한다.
