(광주=브레이크뉴스) 이학수 기자=더불어민주당 호남발전특별위원회 광주 위원회는 지난 7일 광주과학기술원(GIST)에서 지역 혁신 성장을 위한 간담회를 개최하고 산업 연구시설 현장을 방문했다.
이번 행사는 청년 인구 유출 문제 해결과 지역 경제 활성화를 위해 GIST의 연구 역량을 핵심 동력으로 활용하는 방안을 논의하는 자리였다.
이병훈 수석부위원장은 "광주는 배고픈 민주주의를 하고 있다"고 현 상황을 진단하며, "이제는 신산업 육성을 통해 경제적으로 풍요로운 도시로 나아가야 한다"고 강조했다.
이어 "청년들이 수도권으로 떠나지 않고, 광주에서도 꿈을 실현할 수 있는 시스템을 만드는 것이 우리의 목표"라며, GIST를 "국가 최고 수준의 연구성과를 내는 기관이자 지역 발전과 청년 일자리 창출의 핵심 축"으로 규정했다.
간담회에는 이병훈 수석부위원장, 정성호 GIST 교학부총장, 호남발전특위 위원, GIST 관계자와 재학생 등이 참석했다.
특히, 재학생들은 청년들이 광주에 남을 수 있도록 하는 실질적인 유인책과 정착 지원 방안, 현장형 직무 경험 및 글로벌 역량 강화 지원 확대 등을 요구했다.
또한, AI 직접단지 등 대형 프로젝트의 단기 성과 방지를 위한 GIST 등 연구기관 인프라 보호 제도 마련과 AI 데이터센터 관련 환경적 영향 대책 마련 등 현실적인 목소리를 전달했다.
전문가 특강에서는 ▲이흥노 GIST 교수가 '국가 디지털자산 거점도시 구축 사업'을, ▲신우진 고등광기술원 수석연구원이 '광주전남 레이저·양자·우주·UAM 혁신밸트 조성 방안'을 주제로 발표하며 GIST 중심의 첨단 연구 클러스터 구축 필요성을 역설했다.
참석자들은 간담회 후 GIST 중앙기기 연구소와 슈퍼컴퓨팅센터 등 연구시설을 방문해 첨단 연구 인프라 운영 현황을 점검했다.
참석자들은 GIST가 지역 미래 산업 생태계를 주도할 핵심 기관으로 성장하고 있다는 점에 공감하며, 연구개발 성과가 산업화와 인재 양성으로 이어지는 혁신의 선순환 구조를 강화해야 한다는 데 뜻을 모았다.
