Keimyung University to host ‘2025 World University Taekwondo Festival’... 1,800 athletes from 26 countries participating
Young taekwondo practitioners from around the world are gathering in Daegu. The ‘2025 Daegu World University Taekwondo Festival’ will be held for four days from July 5 to 8 at Keimyung University’s Seongseo Campus Gymnasium.
This competition is a G1-level international competition jointly approved by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the World Taekwondo Federation (WT), and is an official competition that awards Olympic ranking points. It is particularly noteworthy as the only international stage that continues the legacy of the World University Taekwondo Championships, which was merged with the Summer Universiade and disappeared.
The competition will be attended by 1,500 athletes and coaches from 26 countries, including the United States, Canada, India, Taiwan, China, and Japan, and 300 domestic and international officials, adding to the global taekwondo fever. In addition to the competition, the participants will share their respective cultures and create a venue for international exchange through sports.
The competition categories include official Poomsae (G1, Division 2·3), free Poomsae (G1), and sparring (G1), and both elite athletes and club teams from universities can participate, so it is expected to be a competition with both skill and diversity.
The official opening ceremony will be held at Keimyung University Gymnasium at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 6. The event will be graced by a large number of figures from the political, government, and sports world, including Keimyung University President Shin Il-hee (Organizing Committee Chairman), World Taekwondo Federation President Cho Jeong-won, Korea Taekwondo Association President Yang Jin-bang, Daegu City Economic Vice Mayor Hong Seong-ju, Daegu City Superintendent of Education Kang Eun-hee, Dalseo-gu Mayor Lee Tae-hoon, and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power President Hwang Ju-ho.
Daegu City, which took the lead in hosting the event, will host the event for three consecutive years, starting with the first competition in 2024 and continuing until 2026. As approximately 2,000 domestic and international participants visit Daegu every year, it is expected to have a positive ripple effect on not only revitalizing the local economy but also promoting tourism and culture.
Keimyung University, the host university of the competition, is the only university in the Daegu/Gyeongbuk region with a Taekwondo department and Korea Taekwondo Center, and has excellent infrastructure that can be used as a training ground for Olympic teams from around the world. Based on this foundation, the successful hosting of the 2022 competition was achieved, making this event a reality.
President Shin Il-hee said, “I am delighted to have a place where young Taekwondo players from around the world can compete and build friendship at Keimyung University,” and added, “I will do my best to make this a festival where sports, culture, and education come together.”
