1)평소 가까이 지내온 송영길(宋永吉) 소나무당 대표(전 민주당 대표, 62)와 지난 6월29일 저녁을 같이 했다. 1심에서 재 구속된 지 167일 만인 지난 23일 보석으로 풀려났다. 주요 혐의 중 후원회비 문제와 돈 봉투 관련한 건은 1심에서 무죄가 났다. 나머지 혐의인 정치자금법 위반도 무죄가 될 거라고 송영길 대표는 확신한다.
무엇보다 건강해 보여 좋았다. 장사(壯士)의 고향 전남 고흥(高興) 출신으로, 182cm의 키에 손발이 크고 목소리도 굵어 매우 건장해 보이는 그는 건강을 유지하기 위해 매일 푸씨업을 1백 개 이상씩 하는 등 노력을 기울였다고 말했다. 송영길 대표는 이미 우리 정계의 큰 인물의 하나다. 5선 국회의원, 인천시장, 민주당 대표라는 경력만으로도 한국정치의 큰 자산이다.

그는 도전하고 희생할 줄 아는 정치인이다. 6선 의원, 국회의장 도전을 포기하고 서울시장 후보로 나선 것부터 그의 도전하고 희생하려 하는 정치철학을 보여준다. 아니 정치하기 전의 인생 역정 자체부터 그러했다.
광주민주화항쟁을 광주 대동고교 3학년생으로 피눈물을 쏟으며 지켜봤던 그는 연세대(경영학과) 총학생회 회장으로 학생운동을 주도해 제적되자 공장 노동운동에 뛰어든다. 그렇다. 5월 광주를 온 가슴과 온 몸으로 겪은 그가 대학을 마친 뒤 김남주 시인의 절규(학살의 원흉이 지금/옥좌에 앉아있다/학살에 치를 떨며 들고일어난 사람들은 지금/감옥에서 철장에서 피를 흘리고 있다. 시인 김남주, 학살 3)가 뇌리를 채우는데 그냥 취직이나 할 수 있었겠는가.
그는 노동운동이 드셌던 인천으로 가 위장취업을 하고 훗날 '인민노련(仁民勞聯)'으로 불려지는 조직에서 7년 선배 노회찬(魯會燦) 전 의원(2018년 작고) 등과 열심히 노동운동을 했다.
그러나 강고한 전두환 철혈 군사독재 체제에서 노동운동이 번번이 실패하고 좌절이 이어지자 그는 다른 방법으로 돌파구를 열어볼 결심을 한다. 인권노동 변호사가 되면 좀 더 많은 동지들을 도울 수 있을 것 같았다.
사법고시 공부를 시작해 1994년 31살 늦은 나이에 합격했다. 그의 6남매는 공부에는 탁월했다. 형 둘, 누이까지 포함해 넷 중 둘은 사법고시, 둘은 행정고시에 각각 합계한다. 송 대표의 장형 송하성 교수는 <송가네 공부법>이라는 책을 내기도 했다. 송영길 대표는 1999년 계양, 강화갑 지역구 보궐선거에 출사표를 내고 정계에 입문한다. 첫 도전 결과는 낙선이었지만 그 뒤 이 곳은 그에게 5선의 영광을 주는 약속의 땅이 된다.

중국 칭화대에서 1년 공부했고, 방통대 중문과와 일어과를 졸업했다. 그가 처음 영어공부를 시작한 계기가 흥미롭다. 초선의원 시절 국제회의에 참석했는데, 북한 대표가 자신보다 영어를 훨씬 더 잘 하는 것을 보고 충격을 받아 귀국하자마자 공부를 시작했다는 것이다.
송영길은 '미스터 클린'이다. 공직자 재산신고액이 6억원 대였고, 24평형 전세에 산다. 의원 시절 세비의 25%를 '밥퍼' 등 여러 기관에 기부했다. 필자도 알고지내는 '한반도와 세계평화를 위해 달리는 마라토너 강명구'가 있다. 그가 한번은 세계일주를 준비하는 과정에서 워낙 형편이 어려워 송 의원에게 얘기했더니 바로 국회로 초대해 2천만원을 주었다.(2017년이니 꽤 큰 돈이다). 더욱이 놀라운 것은 이 돈이 여윳돈이 아니라 전세보증금을 올려주기 위해 준비했던 돈의 일부였다는 것이다.

3)스승 박석무(朴錫武) 다산(茶山)연구소장이 말하는 제자 송영길.
지난 2008년 어느 날. 당시 초대 한국고전번역원 원장이던 박석무 다산연구소장이 한 포럼에서 마이크를 잡았다. 45세의 3선 국회의원으로 잘 나가던 송영길 최고위원은 박석무 소장의 광주 대동고 교사 시절 제자였다.
<정치인은 불의에 분노하고 정의를 위해 싸울 줄 알아야 한다. 여기 있는 내 광주 대동고 제자 송영길은 고2 때 "교련 반대", "특별수업 반대" 데모를 주동했다.
고 2가 민주주의를 위해 데모를 했다면 괜찮은 놈 아닌가? 그 날이 1979년 10월 26일이었다. 주동자 송영길을 비롯한 학생들은 구금되고, 난 주동교사로 몰려 도피해야 했다.
그것으로 끝이 아니다. 1980년 광주 민주화 항쟁 관련해 나는 내란죄를 덮어쓰고 감옥에 갔다. 그런데 어느 날 면회 온 아내가 엉엉 우는 게 아닌가! 81년 2월 대동고를 졸업한 송영길과 7, 8명 학생들이 아내를 찾아와 영치금을 놓고 갔다는 것이었다.
그 당시 고교생들은 3년간 강제저축을 하게 되어있었다. 졸업 때 그 돈을 다 돌려받게 되는데, 애들이 돈을 모아가지고 와서는 "사모님도 월급 나오는 데도 없다고 들었다"며 그 소중한 돈을 내놓더라는 것이었다.
아내를 보내고 나는 혼자 감톱방(독방)에 들어가 꺼이꺼이 울었다. "아, 애들은 나를 내란죄 범죄자로 보지 않는구나“라는 기쁨. 또 고2 때 데모를 했던 그 아이들이 이렇게 통장을 털어 영치금을 가져왔다는 감동ᆢ. 송영길은 그런 제자였다. 떡잎부터 알아본다고 했다. 일찍이 정의를 위해 싸울 줄 알았다. 마음 씀씀이, 인품이 너무 좋았다. 고2 때 벌써 오늘의 송영길을 예견할 수 있었다>
박석무 소장은 13, 14대 의원 때,그리고 1995년 '통추'(국민통합추진회의) 활동을 할 때부터 기자로서 알았으니 30년이 넘는다. 더욱이 필자가 '통추'의 대표격이었던 김원기 전 국회의장(17대 전반기) 공보수석을 했던 2004-2006년에는 더욱 자주 만났고, 그 이후로도 지금껏 가까이 교유(交遊)하고 있다.
박석무 선생은 '큰 바위 얼굴'이다. 그만큼 다양하다. 법대 출신인데, 중고교 영어교사를 13년 했다. 전통적 한학자 집에서 자라 어려서부터 한학에 능했고, 이런 기초 덕에 국내 최고의 다산(茶山) 연구자가 될 수 있었다. 초대 한국 고전번역원장을 한 것도 그 연장선이었다. 박석무 선생은 광주 민주화 운동의 대부(大父) 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 1980년에도 옥고를 치렀고, 5.18 기념문화재단 이사장도 역임했다.

4)최근 박석무 소장을 다시 만나 송영길에 대해 물었다.
-송영길은 고2 때 그 데모 후 처벌 받았나?
"아니다. 그게 하늘이 돕는다는 거다. 데모 한 날이 1979년 10월26일이어서 일단 송영길을 비롯한 주동 학생들의 처벌은 불가피했고, 나는 학생들 배후조종 혐의가 씌워져 잠시 몸을 피했다. 그런데, 다음 날 아침에 '박정희 시해, 사망' 이런 소식이 전해진 거다. 바로 학교에 가서 그 때까지 처벌 대기중이던 애들을 다 풀어주게 했다".
-그 날 시위, 데모엔 학생들 몇 명이나 참가했나?
"내가 영어 가르치는 반이 1-4반인데, 그 4개 반의 240명은 다 참가했다. 주동이 송영길이었고. 기재부차관 했던 김용범(이재명 정부 정책실장), 경기지방경찰청장 역임한 강경량, 정치인 김희갑, 한국은행 부총재보를 한 정규일, 삼성그룹 정규성 부사장 등 똑똑한 애들이 즐비했다. 강기정(현 광주시장 )은 1학년이었고".
-10.26이 선생님과 송영길 등 학생들을 살린 셈이다. 다음 날 학교에 가보니 어떤 상태이던가?
"이미 학교 당국과 경찰에서 주동자급 10여명을 밤샘 조사해 놨고, 모두 내가 시킨 걸로 되어있었다. '박정희 사망으로 세상이 바뀐 걸 모르느냐'며 내가 모두 데리고 나왔다".
-데모와 관련해 특별히 더 기억나는 일이 있는가?
"아침 일찍 애들을 다 데리고 나오긴 했는데, 학교에서 주동 학생들은 정학 처분했다. 그러면 애들이 장학금을 받지 못하게 된다. 내가 다시 나서서 정학처분 다 취소시켰다".
-대동고 영어교사 재직이 특별히 소중하게 기억되는 것은 10.26, 5.18 같은 역사적인 사건이 그 기간에 일어난 탓도 있겠지만 송영길 등 우수하고 정의감에 찬 제자들을 길렀다는 자부심도 클 것 같다
"그렇다. 교사 재직기간 13년(18년중 전교조 해직기간 5년 제외) 중 대동고에서 1975-1980년 5년간 가르쳤는데, 가장 크게 보람을 느꼈던 것 같다. 실제 5.18 민주화항쟁 때 송영길의 친구가 총에 희생되기도 했다. 감옥가거나 다른 희생을 치른 제자들도 꽤 있다".
-대동고 가셨을 때 몇 살이었나?
'33살. 내 청춘을 다 바친다는 자세였다. 대동고 제자들이 너무 예뻤다. 내가 광주항쟁 때 감옥에 갔는데, 대학생 10명이 붙잡혀 왔다. 그런데, 그 중 7명이 대동고 출신이더라 예뻐하지 않을 도리가 있겠나?

5)이재명과 송영길.

Out of my 13 years as a teacher (excluding 5 years of the 18 years when I was dismissed from the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union), I taught at Daedong High School for 5 years from 1975 to 1980, and I think that was the most rewarding. In fact, Song Young-gil's friend was shot and killed during the May 18 Democratization Movement. There were quite a few students who went to prison or made other sacrifices."
- How old were you when you went to Daedong High School?
'33. I had the attitude of dedicating my youth to it. The students at Daedong High School were so pretty. I went to prison during the Gwangju Uprising, and 10 college students were arrested. But how could I not be pretty when 7 of them were from Daedong High School?
-How do you view Song Young-gil as a junior politician? "I saw an article titled <10 Charms of Song Young-gil that Seoul Citizens Don't Know> (written by the author), and I think it captures Song Young-gil the best. He is so clean that he could live in a 24-pyeong jeonse. He is a donor who knows how to share and give. I was surprised, but he has been donating 25% of his expenses to Pastor Choi Il-do of 'Bobber' for the past 3 years. He has outstanding leadership skills to the point of being the party representative for 5 terms. He is a hard worker who speaks 4 languages, and he has an excellent international sense as he served as the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee for 4 years. He is already a political giant who has the political sense and judgment to sacrifice himself and run for mayor of Seoul. Song Young-gil, who is a disciple who excels in writing, speaking, and acting and is warm-hearted above all else, is the most anticipated politician. Isn't he the most underrated and best-selling current politician?
However, many people agree that if he had not become a member of the National Assembly through the 22nd general election, it would have been difficult for President Lee Jae-myung to be where he is today. If so, then it seems that the big decision of Representative Song Young-gil to give his constituency of Gyeyang to Representative Lee Jae-myung (at the time) played a big role in determining today and the future of the Republic of Korea.

5) Lee Jae-myung and Song Young-gil.
Although it is an assumption, many people agree that if he had not become a member of the National Assembly through the 22nd general election, President Lee Jae-myung would not have been where he is today. If so, then it can be said that Representative Song Young-gil's big decision to give his constituency of 'Incheon Gyeyang' to Representative Lee Jae-myung (then) played a big role and contributed to determining today and the future of the Republic of Korea. President Lee Jae-myung was born in 1964 on his family register, but he was actually born in 1963, the year of the rabbit, making him the same age as Song Young-gil.
After entering politics, Song Young-gil went on a smooth path and became a mainstream political leader in central politics, as he was already the party leader in June 2021, four years ago. In contrast, Lee Jae-myung went through all sorts of hardships and became the mayor of Seongnam in 2010, a position that was not well-known in central politics. However, the situation changed in an instant, and Lee Jae-myung is now president, just one month into his term, while Song Young-gil is a defendant found guilty in the first trial. However, in politics, a living organism that is constantly changing, no one can predict what Song Young-gil’s future will be like.
Even if he were to be called the next opposition presidential candidate along with Cho Kuk, Kim Kyung-soo, and Kim Dong-yeon, who would argue? However, unlike others, Song Young-gil is in a position where he can expect some kind of repayment from President Lee Jae-myung, even if this expression is a bit awkward. Attention is focused on whether a bromance will develop between Lee Jae-myung and Song Young-gil or whether an unexpected tension will arise.
