[In-depth Tracking-2] Unification Church members’ ‘long-term imprisonment’ shocks Japan’s version of ‘concentration camps’

Korean Unification Church endures truly brutal persecution and oppression since its missionary work in Japan in 1959

- Author Kwon Oh-moon

Democratic countries around the world guarantee freedom of religion. Japanese religions have freely entered South Korea and are freely proselytizing, securing a huge number of followers. The Korean religion, the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (Unification Church), has established itself as a religious group that has entered Japan and succeeded in missionary work. However, the Japanese government has recently been oppressing Korean religions. On October 13, 2013, the Japanese government filed a request for the dissolution of the religious corporation of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (Unification Church) with the Tokyo District Court. This is the first time since the Family Federation acquired religious corporation status in 1964 that it has been designated as a “socially problematic organization,” which is tantamount to a death sentence. We will track and reveal the reality of the recent suppression of the Korean religious group, the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (Unification Church), in Japan. (Author’s note)

Whenever a new religion begins missionary work, persecution follows. It is a well-known fact that there has been persecution since the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification was founded in Japan.

Choi Bong-chun, the first missionary to Japan, was an illegal immigrant. At the time, diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan had not been normalized, so it was difficult to enter the country through normal routes, so he had no choice but to enter the country illegally. He overcame all kinds of hardships with utmost sincerity, including fasting, while being imprisoned for five months. After the church was launched with the first service on the second floor of the Yukeisha in Tokyo, Japan on October 2, 1959, several key executives, including Osami Kuboki, joined the church in the early 1960s, and the administrative system was established on December 16, 1962, putting it on a normal track. In the mid-1960s, the church developed rapidly. One daily newspaper even introduced the development of the Japanese church through an article titled “Unifying the World” and “Unification Church Spreading in Japan” with a photo of believers preaching on the streets of Tokyo in the background (Dong-A Ilbo, November 1, 1964). At that time, it was revealed that there were about 1,000 believers and 50 churches in Japan, and “Women of the Unification Church were openly preaching on Ginza Street in Tokyo… . He introduced the activities as, “We are carrying out a movement called ‘Unifying the World.’”

The center of the Japanese church was young people. The Japanese media even reported on their fierce activities by posting a member recruitment poster on the bulletin board of the University of Tokyo with the message, “Here lies love and truth.” The Japanese media evaluated the phenomenon of many students joining the Unification Church movement as a major change in the student movement (Weekly Korea, August 27, 1967).

The suffering of the Japanese church and the intervention of the Communist Party

There were also various counteractions behind these active movements. The first was the activities of the ‘Parents of Victims’ Association,’ organized by some parents whose children were members of the Family Federation. On July 7, 1967, the Asahi Shimbun published an article titled, “The Principle Movement That Makes Parents Cry, Students Spreading Academic Abandonment and Running Away from Home,” and other media outlets rushed to report negative articles. Behind this, there was a strong aspect of leftist forces such as the Communist Party instigating parents by providing distorted information. In 1968, the International Victory over Communism Movement was established in Japan, and the Victory over Communism Movement spread like wildfire. The Victory over Communism Movement focused mainly on pointing out the problems of the Communist Party and refuting communist theory, and confronted the Communist Party. The opponents who declared a head-on fight were the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) and the Japanese Communist Party.

Since the Victory over Communism Movement was carried out in a country where the Communist Party was legalized, it was inevitable that it would become a point of contention. The Japanese Family Federation aimed to prevent the spread of the Communist Party in Japan and ultimately overcome communism. However, as the 1970s approached, friction with the Communist Party deepened. Japanese churches raised the slogan, “Communism is wrong,” and confronted the Communist Party head-on.

In response, the Communist Party supported groups and parents of believers who had bad relations with the Family Federation and attacked the Family Federation. As such, the Japanese Communist Party was deeply involved behind the persecution of the Japanese Family Federation.

The course of the persecution of the Japanese Family Federation

The Family Federation had to endure truly severe persecution in Japan. Most of the persecution was organized by the opposition parents' association and the Communist Party. △1979.11.16 The Association Concerned about the Principle Movement invited doctors from Jichi University and held a lecture titled "Thinking about Brainwashing." Full-scale confinement of Family Federation believers in psychiatric hospitals

Believers confined in facilities and psychiatric hospitals

The Japanese Communist Party and Socialist Party were systematically involved in the operation to force Japanese Family Federation believers to leave the group. They were more vicious than any other country in that they confined them in psychiatric hospitals and forced them to convert because they had a specific religion.

As of July 2022, the Family Federation of Japan announced that approximately 4,000 believers had been kidnapped and confined for forced conversion and withdrawal. These believers had suffered from the extreme of religious persecution and human rights suppression, kidnapping and confinement for several years at the shortest and several decades at the longest. In particular, in the 1990s, more than 300 believers were kidnapped and confined annually. This damage was also reported to international human rights organizations.

In Japan, where religious freedom and human rights are guaranteed, the fact that violent confinement facilities forcing conversion exist in the capital, Tokyo, is shocking. The Principle Victims Rehabilitation Association (Chairman Tomigoro Goto) openly operated the ‘Shinsekai Home.’ This confinement facility had iron frames attached to the windows to control entry.

The person who created this facility, Tomigoro Goto, is an anti-Family Federation activist who has incited his relatives to forcibly admit believers to mental hospitals or confine them in their homes. He is a professional defection broker who makes a living by doing so. He initially engaged in opposition activities because of his son who joined the Family Federation, but after his son quit, he took the lead in instructing activities to confine and de-involve Family Federation believers as the chairman of the ‘National Principle Movement Victims Parents Association.’

Another person who created the ‘Shinsekai Home’ is Takashi Maruyama, a former member of the Family Federation. He is a defection broker who kidnaps and detains Family Federation believers and forces them to convert. Maruyama, an advisor to the ‘Shinsekai Home,’ has a history of raping Ms. L (female) several times. He instructed L’s parents to confine her in the “Shinsekai Home” while criticizing the Family Federation. After being confined in the “Shinsekai Home” on October 3, 1976, L submitted a letter of withdrawal from the Family Federation under Maruyama’s threat, and was moved to Maruyama’s house and confined on October 21. After being raped several times by Maruyama, she escaped on January 24, 1977. L arrested, detained, confined, kidnapped, raped, and assaulted Maruyama and Tomigoro Goto, and filed a complaint with the Nerima Police Station in Tokyo.

Mr. V (male, 25), who escaped from the “Shinsekai Home,” testified about his confinement as follows:

“I saw a gap and tore the wire mesh on the window, jumped out onto the road, and ran away barefoot. I was so scared that I thought my heart was going to burst. Maruyama and others handcuffed them and took away their physical freedom, making them swear to abandon the principles. This is religious oppression. This is absolutely unforgivable.”

The ‘Shinsekai Home’ was closed two years after its opening. However, it left an indelible scar on the Family Federation believers who were admitted during this period.

Regarding the operation of the ‘Shinsekai Home’, the chairman, Tomigoro Goto, explains as follows:

(1) First, the child’s hands and feet are tied with ropes and chains and put to sleep. In order to do this, the parents must have enough strength to restrain the child.

(2) The beating is to bring the child back to his or her senses.

(3) After that, Maruyama lectures and persuades the child. Since the child’s mind is stable, it goes into the head well.

(4) The child is chained in an isolated room with 4 and a half and 6 and a half cubicles. If the child abandons the Unification Principle, the child is moved to a large room with 6 and a half cubicles.

(5) If the child develops hatred for the Principle, the child graduates.

(6) The monthly fee is 500,000 to 600,000 yen.

(7) The parents of new members receive an entrance fee of 200,000 yen. After that, he receives 30,000 yen as a membership fee every month.

In the case of Teruko Honma, who led the opposition to the Family Federation, it is said that he opposed the movement because his daughter had joined the Family Federation, but the daughter had joined after being troubled by her parents' discord. People around him say that Honma tried to compensate for her unsatisfactory situation, such as her husband's disappearance, by opposing the movement.

In November 1972, Honma went to Tokyo and represented the Communist Party's "New Women" and Minsho Conference, "Mothers' Conference," etc., and he also created the "Yokokai" (陽光會) parents' association opposing the Principle Movement and became its president.

He confined his own daughter to a mental hospital and was involved in several confinement incidents. Mr. G, a Kyushu University student, was confined to Wakakusa Hospital in Miyazaki City, and Mr. G's father testified at the Miyazaki Branch of the Fukuoka High Court that Honma was involved.

In addition, Honma Teruko was involved in the incident where Ms. S, an elementary school teacher, was confined to a Tochigi Prefecture psychiatric hospital, the incident where Mr. A, a graduate of Musashi University, was confined to Kurumegaoka Hospital in Tokyo, and the incident where Ms. K, a woman from Hiroshima Prefecture, was confined to the home of Tsunehisa Yoneda.

Opponents like Honma visited the parents of Family Federation believers, spread negative propaganda about the Family Federation, and then instigated them to confine themselves to psychiatric hospitals. The parents believed their words and deceived their children or used force to confine them to psychiatric hospitals or "New Life Homes." Unification Church anti-activists would imprison believers who had no problems and then spread propaganda saying, “They went crazy because they joined the Family Federation.” And after hospitalizing believers who were attending school, they would spread propaganda saying, “They dropped out because they joined the Family Federation.”

In addition, it was revealed that after imprisoning believers in mental hospitals, they not only restricted their freedom, but also injected them with sleeping pills to make them unable to resist and made them take regular medication so that they could not remember past events. Many of the believers who were hospitalized for such a long time suffered from aftereffects such as drug addiction or psychological anxiety.

Court’s Release Decision, Exposing Communist Party Intervention

After the Tokyo High Court ruled in March 1980 that “conversion through mental hospitalization is illegal,” the reality of the Family Federation imprisonment cases began to be exposed. It was revealed that there were over 20 cases of Family Federation believers being imprisoned at the time. These incidents were ostensibly the parents hospitalizing or confining their children, but it was revealed that behind the scenes there were teachers from the Family Federation opposition movement group in collusion with the Japanese Communist Party.

Communism has a negative view of religion, saying, “Religion is the opium of the people.” (Karl Marx) and “Communist society is a historical development stage that renders existing religions useless and disappears.” (Engels). For this reason, it has been even more fiercely opposed to the Family Federation, which has exposed the falsehood of communism and declared its end.

The place where the Family Federation and the Communist Party confronted each other most fiercely was Japan. The Japanese Communist Party and Socialist Party have politicized issues through questions or petitions to the government, or have become spokespeople for those who oppose the Family Federation.

The contents of the National Principle Movement Victims’ Association’s investigation and announcement from the fall of 1976 to February 1977, such as “Three Family Federation believers dead, 32 missing,” are cited as important data by opponents. The Victims’ Parents’ Association sent a letter to Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda on January 27, 1977. Based on this, Socialist Party member Masashi Ishibashi questioned Prime Minister Fukuda at the Budget Committee of the State Assembly (Hankook Ilbo, February 8, 1977, etc.). In the end, the Ministry of Justice’s Human Rights Protection Bureau conducted an investigation into the case, and it was revealed that the announcement by the “Victims’ Parents’ Association” was incorrect (see “Japanese Internment Camp Archipelago,” pp. 406–413).

However, lawyers affiliated with the Communist Party were deeply involved behind the scenes in the detention incident, further complicating the case. In particular, the Japanese Family Federation exposed the Communist Party’s falsehood of denying God through the Victory Movement, but suffered greatly from their organized counterattack.

Japanese pastors who are active in secret, and their conspiracies

Most of the activities opposing the Family Federation were carried out by some Christian leaders. It is the same in Japan. Some pastors who have instigated violent conversion incidents involving kidnapping and confinement of Japanese church members have also colluded with parents who oppose the Family Federation to commit acts of human rights violations such as illegal kidnapping and confinement. The kidnappers and confinements were carried out by relatives, but the ones who persuaded the confined believers to leave the church were some Christian pastors or brokers who left the church. The nationwide opposition to the Family Federation continues to this day, but the opposition activities from the early 1970s to the late 1980s can be largely divided into three stages. The first stage was the stage in which the National Parents’ Association of Victims of the Principle Movement was founded by Teruko Honma on April 22, 1973, and was led by Tomigoro Goto, a broker who left the church. Goto instigated parents to confine believers in solitary confinement cells with iron bars or forcibly admit them to mental hospitals. However, he died suddenly while fighting with the accusers in court. When it was revealed that Goto had different views from his brainchild, Teruko Honma, he left the Opposition Parents Association and established the “Principle Victims Rehabilitation Association” with Takashi Maruyama in May 1976. This group committed illegal acts to the point that it was synonymous with violent conversion groups, and member Takashi Maruyama was even sued for assaulting and raping a woman. At this time, it was a stage of conversion through violent means. As it entered the second stage, it gradually became more political. That is, the Socialist Party and the Communist Party were uncomfortable with the existence of the anti-communist Family Federation and its friendly group, the Victory over Communism Alliance, and so they mobilized prominent figures to establish the “Association Concerned about the Principle Movement.” During this period, left-wing members of the National Assembly attacked the Family Federation in the National Assembly, dragging it into political issues and trying to institutionally strengthen the regulation of the Family Federation. The representatives of this group are former president of Waseda University Sukenaga Murai, former president of Lutheran Theological Seminary Kishi Chidose, and critic Shin Aochi. Most of the people whose names are mentioned in this group have strong leftist tendencies.

The Communist Party, which has felt a sense of crisis due to the activities of the Family Federation and the Victory over Communism Association, came to believe that the most effective way to get the Family Federation believers to leave the group was to work together with some pastors. This is a strategy that not only puts pressure on the church externally, but also destroys faith internally.

In the third stage, some opposing pastors and leftist forces cooperated and participated in persuading people to leave the group. The following are pastors who taught the conversion activities of the Family Federation believers to their relatives and participated in opposition activities nationwide. In the Christian church in Japan, there are Pastor Eiji Enomoto of Sapporo Hokkou Church, Pastor Sanai Hashimoto of Donggyo Church, Pastor R. Kaiden of Twelve Apostles Church, Pastor Noriyoshi Okumura of Tomagomai Yayoi Church (all from Hokkaido), Pastor Kyoko Kawasaki of Tanimura Church (Yamanashi Prefecture), Pastor Hideo Izuma of Hamamatsu Enshu Eiko Glory Church (Shizuoka Prefecture), Pastor Hideo Izuma of Hamamatsu Enshu Eiko Church (Shizuoka Prefecture), and Pastor Takeshi Kobayashi of Takeo Church (Saga Prefecture). In the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Japan, there are Pastor Masayuki Hiraoka of Nagano Church, and Pastor Koji Saito of Yaizu Church. In the Japanese Assembly of God denomination, Pastor Hisoka Murakami (Kyoto Prefecture), in the Alliance of Christ, Pastor Yatsudomo Matsunaga of the Needs Gospel Christian Church (Niigata Prefecture), and in the Japanese Catholic Church, Father Hideaki Noma of the Modohara Church (Nagasaki Prefecture) were involved. Others include Professor Sadao Asami of Tohoku Graduate School, Soji Saito of the Christian Bookstore (Nagasaki Prefecture), and Shinya Waga of the Seven Day Adventist Church.

These pastors view the Family Federation as a heresy in Christianity and criticize the contents of the Divine Principle in a nitpicking manner. In particular, they instruct parents to kidnap and confine their children, or admit believers to mental hospitals and brainwash and convert them while they are physically weak.

Opposing pastors have also published criticisms of the Family Federation. These include Asami Sadao’s “Unification Association = Principle Movement” and Moriyama Satoshi’s “From the Unification Church to the True Messiah: Correcting the Errors of the Principle Lectures.”

Illegal acts by pastors

While opposing pastors who are forcing conversion on Family Federation believers claim that their actions are based on justice, they have quietly carried out their work to the point of being called “secret agents.” They have made sure that the kidnapping and confinement is carried out by relatives, and they have taken the utmost care not to leave behind any evidence of their involvement (instigation). If the facts of illegal confinement are clearly revealed, they will be subject to legal sanctions for violating the “freedom of religion” specified in the Constitution. They have also been careful not to leave any evidence of their instigation of kidnapping and confinement in the parents of believers.

They have also incited parents to hate the Family Federation, thereby increasing their distrust of their children. Ms. A (female), who escaped after being persuaded to convert by Pastor Koji Saito of the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church, testified as follows:

“I can say with certainty that the relationship of trust between me and my parents was very strong. However, I don’t know how I approached my mother, but she ended up saying that she couldn’t trust me as her daughter. Of course, I was hurt, and I think my mother suffered even more than I did. Up until then, we had tried to understand each other, but everything we had built up up until then collapsed all at once. I can’t tell how much we were hurt.”

The materials released by pastors opposing the Family Federation clearly acknowledge the kidnapping and confinement. For example, the April 4, 1987 issue of the Kyodo Shinbo carried a discussion article titled “The Reality of the Principle as Told by a Resigner.” It was an article by Pastor Kyoko Kawasaki of the Tanimura Church of the Christian Church in Japan and a member who had resigned from the Family Federation. Former Family Federation believer Kenji Tanaka (pseudonym) testified, “A microbus suddenly stopped in front of my house at around 5 a.m. last April, and I was forcibly taken in. Of course, I tried to run away, but 20 people, including my relatives, surrounded me.” Junko Kataoka (pseudonym) also said, “I was cleverly tricked into following me here (Tanimura Church) at the end of February this year.” In this way, we can confirm that Family Federation believers were not taken in by their own will until they went to the church of the opposing pastor. Their departure from Family Federation was due to the forced persuasion of those around them, centered around the opposition faction. However, the opposing pastors were prepared to place all the blame on their parents in case their actions led to legal issues, and left open a way for themselves to escape. In the book “From the Unification Church to the True Messiah” written by Pastor Moriyama of the Ogikubo Eiko Church in Japan, there is evidence that Pastor Moriyama was involved in kidnapping and confinement. Pages 100 to 168 of this book are the memoir of Keiko, who left the Unification Church. The kidnapping and confinement are vividly depicted on pages 110 to 147 of this memoir. The summary is as follows:

“After receiving a call from my parents who were staying at T Onsen in Nagano, I went to the inn where my parents were staying, happy that I could talk to them for the first time in a long time.

When I entered the entrance and turned my gaze toward the lobby, there were two gentlemen watching TV. Their eyes were sharp and they stared at my face for a long time as if they were carving something into it (page 110). They were Pastor Moriyama (page 114) and President Amano (天野), who had a company (page 124). When I met my parents and younger sister and the four of us went to the bathhouse, my father declared war, saying, “Geiko, let’s just go home.” (p. 111). I felt a thrill all over my body. Pastor Moriyama and Mr. Amano, who were in the lobby, came down to the front door and stared at me with eyes as sharp as shards of glass (p. 111).

At that moment, my maternal uncle and several other people picked me up and put me in a black taxi parked right next to the front door (p. 112). Everything seemed to have been planned well. Judging from the fact that the people at the inn were not making a fuss, it seemed like they knew everything. Everything was prepared for that moment (p. 112).”

The dazzling eyes of a watcher

The taxi carrying Geiko ran without stopping and arrived at Pastor Moriyama’s Glory Church. The next morning, Pastor Moriyama began giving a Bible lecture. Seven people surrounded him (p. 116). Geiko confided in me about her life in captivity at the time:

“I prayed without eating anything. I was between Mr. Y and Mr. K (both of Keiko’s uncles) who were looking at materials about the Family Federation, and the people who were talking, but I was still locked up. Even when I went to the bathroom, there was a watchman, and even when I went to the small hall, there were surveillance eyes flashing, and there were almost no shutters on the windows. My every move was followed and followed persistently.” (p. 124)

Amano continued to brainwash Keiko while she was locked up. When Keiko pleaded to be sent back, Amano replied, “If you study the Bible, compare it to the Principle, and are convinced by the right judgment, you can go back.” (p. 125) He was so coercive that Keiko said, “It’s ridiculous to tell me to stay indefinitely until I realize that the Principle is wrong.”

A fierce argument broke out when Keiko was caught trying to call. He said, “There were several arms reaching out to press down on my body. “I became a lunatic as if I was being drawn to something” (p. 139), “My head was completely blown, the fuse was blown, and my cool-headed circuit was already cut off” (p. 140).

As you can see from this memoir, Keiko’s head was beyond normal due to the harsh brainwashing of her mind and body. That’s why she suffered a mental defeat.

Constant attacks from opponents

As the escapees revealed the kidnapping and confinement, it was revealed that some pastors were actively involved in conversion activities. This became a social problem, and the debate between the opposing pastors and the Japanese church also heated up. The then-General Affairs Director of the Family Federation of Japan, Akio Kobayashi, explained the series of events in an article titled “Responding to Pastor Moriyama’s Rebuttal.”

“Recently, incidents of kidnapping and confinement by pastors and priests for the purpose of forcibly converting members of the Family Federation have been occurring frequently throughout the country. The reality has been clearly revealed through the victims’ appeals and newspaper articles. In the midst of this, Pastor Moriyama, who continues violent conversion activities, issued a rebuttal to the Family Federation (June 14, 1987 Christian Newspaper, July 4 Christ Newspaper). However, the content of the rebuttal is extremely distorted.

The mental and physical suffering of the Family Federation believers who suffered as a result of the kidnapping and confinement carried out by Pastor Moriyama and others is incalculable. If we ignore Pastor Moriyama’s rebuttal this time, it will only aggravate their suffering, so for the sake of their honor as they courageously escaped in search of religious freedom, we want to clearly reveal the truth about this.”

General Affairs Director Kobayashi refuted each and every one of the facts of the kidnapping and confinement, stating that “the problem is that they have switched the fake with the real,” and that “the rebuttal is a bundle of lies.”

He concluded by saying, “Pastor Moriyama’s writing completely distorts the facts. It is impossible to distort and deceive the facts in order to protect oneself. The Family Federation will deal firmly with this tyranny by this pastor.” <This article refers to the religious newspaper (July 5-September 20, 1987) and the Chinese newspaper (June 1-August 1, 1987) published in Japan>.
