카카오엔터테인먼트의 뮤직플랫폼 멜론이 주최한 ‘The 16th Melon Music Awards, MMA 2024(이하 MMA, 멜론뮤직어워드)’가 지난달 30일 밤 1만 3천명의 관객 앞에서 4시간 동안 아티스트들의 눈부신 공연과 총 27개에 이르는 시상부문의 수상자들을 발표하며 K팝의 새로운 역사를 써내려 갔다.
이날 ‘MMA 2024’는 인천 영종도의 인스파이어 아레나에서 카카오뱅크 후원으로 열렸다. 올해로 20주년을 맞이한 대표 뮤직플랫폼 멜론이 그동안 국내의 음악산업 생태계를 이끌며 글로벌 K팝 열풍을 만들어 낸 저력을 멜론차트를 기반으로 한 공정한 시상과 여러 레전드 무대들을 통해 다시 한 번 입증해냈다.

각 시상부문에서는 에스파가 주요상인 ‘올해의 아티스트’, ‘카카오뱅크 올해의 앨범’, ‘올해의 베스트송’ 3개를 휩쓴데 이어 ‘TOP10’, ‘밀리언스 TOP10’, ‘베스트 그룹 여자’, ‘베스트 퍼포먼스 여자’까지 총 7관왕에 오르는 기염을 토했다. 에스파는 올해 무려 3개의 앨범을 멜론 명예의 전당 내 밀리언스 앨범(발매 24시간 내 100만 스트리밍 돌파 인증)에 올려놓았고, ‘올해의 베스트송’을 수상한 정규 1집 선공개 타이틀곡 ‘Supernova’는 올해 발매곡 중 멜론차트 TOP100 최장기간 1위 기록을 세운 바 있다.

나머지 주요상인 올해 가장 주목할만한 음악적 성취를 이룬 아티스트에게 수여하는 ‘올해의 레코드’는 정규 2집 ‘2’로 큰 사랑을 받은 그룹 (여자)아이들이 받았다.
‘올해의 레코드’ 수상 후 (여자)아이들은 “이렇게 큰 상 주고 올해도 아이들을 그리고 아이들의 음악을 사랑해준 모든 분들께 감사드린다. 저희가 이렇게 재밌고 행복하게 음악 할 수 있는 이유 모두 네버랜드((여자)아이들 팬덤) 덕분이라서 이 순간을 저희 감사한 네버랜드와 함께하고 싶다”며 “이 상을 받을 수 있는 아티스트인 만큼 앞으로도 좋은 음악, 좋은 모습 많이 보여드릴테니까 앞으로도 함께해 달라”고 밝혔다.

The ‘Hot Trend Award’, which selects artists who have presented new music trends and shown meaningful results through music sources, was given to QWER, an uncommon girl band that has had successive hits such as ‘Discord’, ‘Worry Addiction’, and ‘My Name is Clear’.
At ‘MMA 2024’, awards were given in line with the purpose of Melon’s indie music revitalization project ‘Track Zero’ that has been ongoing since 2022. The ‘Track Zero Choice’ category, which honors songs and artists who have contributed to the diversity of popular culture by revealing their own genres and styles, went to Korean band HYUKOH and Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster and ‘Young Man’ from their collaborative album ‘AAA’.

Lee Young-ji started with the ‘Small girl’ stage with ‘surprise partner’ Rise Sohee, and then with Danish musician Christopher, she showed off a special collaboration of ‘perfect chemistry’ with each rapper and singer on the stage of the single ‘Trouble’ released together in September, while the virtual group PLAVE showed off their lively choreography and vocal skills on the ‘WAY 4 LUV’ and ‘Pump Up The Volume!’ stages, to the point where the huge large screen seemed real. Vivi sang the first half of the year’s biggest hit song, “Night Yang-gaeng,” and the swing she was riding on gradually soared upward, creating a stage that felt like watching a musical. TWS, dressed in a blue varsity jacket, sang their debut song and hit song, “First Meeting Doesn’t Go as Planned,” showing off their unique refreshing charm while also arranging their dance moves to stand out, receiving a great response from fans. J-pop artist YOASOBI presented a lyrical yet exciting stage with colorful and unique stage costumes, sang the OST “IDOL” of the animation “My Favorite Child,” which caused a worldwide syndrome. Rise appeared, showing off her charm in a suit, and performed the “Combo” stage with romantic vocals, followed by “Boom Boom Bass,” showing a high-quality stage that perfectly combined Anton’s bass playing, Seongchan and Eunseok’s sensual dance, and Sohee, Wonbin, and Shotaro’s dance break. ATEEZ captivated the audience with a splendid performance filled with 60 people including dancers, musicians, and an orchestra on the ‘WORK’ stage, and Ive started with Jang Won-young’s ballet performance that caught everyone’s attention, and thrilled fans with the fantastic and captivating ‘Ha-Ye’ with ballerinas and the dynamic ‘Accendio’ stage with Ahn Yu-jin’s intense dance break time.

Soyeon appeared shooting an arrow with ‘LATATA’, Shuhua sang ‘Han’ with the feeling of a goddess in a temple, Yuqi sang ‘TOMBOY’ with dancers holding flags, Miyeon sang ‘Queencard’ in a blue temple on the water, and the ‘I hate being sick’ stage showed off the overwhelming singing skills of all the members with 50 dancers. The last stage was Espa, who won the ‘7 crowns’, decorated the stage with a splendid performance of three songs that received much love this year, ‘Whiplash’, ‘Supernova’, and ‘Armageddon’, along with dozens of male and female dancers.
As award presenters, a large number of celebrities including actors, models, influencers, sports stars, and comedians came out to congratulate their fellow singers on their great achievements. Top actors Uhm Jung-hwa, Lee Je-hoon, Moon Geun-young, Jang Geun-suk, Kim Young-dae, Nam Yoon-soo, Yoon Ji-on, Lee Se-hee, ‘Black and White Chef’ Choi Hyun-suk, ‘The Return of Superman’ Kim Jun-ho, ‘I’m Solo’ Song Hae-na, ‘The Influencer’ Lee Sa-bae, comedians Kim Won-hoon, Park Se-mi, Uhm Ji-yoon, and Lee Chang-ho came out as congratulatory messengers, making the night of MMA2024 shine even brighter.
Actor Lee Je-hoon said, “Actors experience different lives in each project. I also lived as a detective in the 1960s and a North Korean soldier dreaming of escape,” and added, “I think the same goes for artists who have to continuously present new lyrics, performances, and music.” He then announced the winner of the ‘Artist of the Year’ award, which has exerted influence in all directions this year.
