Mayor Kang Ki-jung of Gwangju attends the opening ceremony of the Yanglim Alley Biennale

A private-led village festival brought together by artists, residents, merchants, and planners… Synergy effect expected as it is held during the same period as the 15th Gwangju Biennale

(Gwangju=Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-soo=Mayor Kang Ki-jung of Gwangju attended the ‘Yanglim Alley Biennale Opening Ceremony’ held at ‘10 Years Later Ground’ in Yanglim-dong, Nam-gu on the 4th. This Yanglim Alley Biennale is expected to produce synergy effects as it is held during the same period as the Gwangju Biennale.

The ‘Yanglim Alley Biennale’ is a private-led biennial alley art festival that began in 2020 with artists, planners, residents, and merchants in the village as the main players to revitalize the Yanglim-dong Art Gallery Street in Gwangju. This year, it will be held in a total of 33 locations under the theme of ‘The Village is an Art Gallery’ until November 10th during the same period as the Gwangju Biennale.

The opening banquet was attended by Mayor Kang Ki-jeong, Nam-gu Mayor Kim Byeong-nae, Yanglim Alley Biennale Executive Committee Chairperson Han Hee-won, Promotion Committee Chairperson Kang Shin-gyeom, Hakgang Elementary School Principal Choi Je-o, Yanglim-dong Residents’ Autonomy Committee Chairperson Lim Hyeon-suk, and Yanglim Art Museum Street Council members.

The opening banquet was held in a free atmosphere at the 10-year-old Ground Outdoor Yard. The attendees enjoyed the atmosphere of Yanglim-dong as an art village by making buchimgae (Korean pancakes) and sharing food.

Yanglim Alley Biennale Executive Committee Chairperson Han Hee-won said, “Yanglim Alley Biennale is an art festival created by the residents themselves,” and added, “If it is successful by combining well with the Gwangju Biennale, Yanglim-dong has a great potential to transform into a world-class village. I hope that it can deliver love and comfort to many people as an art village representing Gwangju.”

Mayor Kang Ki-jung of Gwangju said, “You can see the Yanglim Alley Biennale, which has become even richer, in Yanglim-dong, where the 15th Gwangju Biennale National Pavilion Pavilion Exhibition is also being held,” and added, “The Yanglim Alley Biennale is something that revitalizes the town and makes Gwangju wonderful. It is a wonderful thing that will become the standard of the Republic of Korea, so please show us your love.”

Meanwhile, Yanglim-dong in Gwangju is the starting point of Gwangju’s modern history, as it was the first place in Gwangju to accept Western modern civilization 100 years ago and has a history of sacrifice and sharing as a community. It contains the history of Gwangju, such as the residence of missionary Woo Il-seon, who developed medical care and education in Gwangju, the Lee Jang-woo House, which conveys the charm of upper-class Joseon Dynasty homes, and the Jo A-ra Memorial Hall, which honors Mrs. Jo A-ra, the mother of democracy and a person who devoted herself to helping the needy. After liberation, many artists, including poet Kim Hyeon-seung, settled here. As it becomes known as an art village with its art galleries, artist spaces, cafes, craft streets, and penguin villages, many people from all over the country visit it.
