10 years of training disciples... 17 brushes that blossomed
Kim Seon-du planned the 10th anniversary exhibition of Tangjin sumik, “The brush was right”
Before the disciples, he also held a solo exhibition of “Blue Day” at Hakgojae
10 years. 87,600 hours. This is the time that the Traditional Culture Foundation and Kim Seon-du have devoted to training Korean painting artists. To commemorate this, the 10th anniversary exhibition of Tangjin sumik, “The brush was right” will be held at Dongduk Art Gallery from August 21 to 27.
The Traditional Culture Foundation Lifelong Education Center opened a training course for sumik drawing artists with Kim Seon-du in 2013 to train Korean painting artists. Over the past 10 years, about 150 trainees have knocked on the door of the artist course. The fruits of 10 years are only 17. It is the result of Kim Seon-du’s strictness, but they are outstanding beings. The colors of the disciples who endured and persevered are breaking free from the shadow of their teacher and opening up their own future with their own colors. The “The Brush Was Right” exhibition is even more meaningful because it is a time when 10 years of hard work and the future come together.
As if setting an example for his disciples, artist Kim Seon-du is currently holding a solo exhibition titled <Blue Day> (July 17, 2024 - August 17, 2024) at Hakgojae in Samcheong-ro, Seoul. This is his first solo exhibition in four years. The title of the exhibition was borrowed from Seo Jeong-ju’s poem “Blue Day.” Critic Kim Baek-gyun (professor at Chung-Ang University) recalled, “Seo Jeong-ju sang the joy of enlightenment as a blue day.” Artist Kim introduced the “Fresh Firecracker” work presented in this exhibition, saying, “It is a firecracker that shoots flowers from the ground.” The moment I heard this, inspiration struck me like lightning. Yes, that’s right. The 17 students who opened the “Brush was Right” exhibition are also like firecrackers that he launched. We asked Kim about the 10th anniversary of Tangjin Sumuk and about nurturing artists.
- What does Tangjin Sumuk ‘squandering sumuk’ mean?
“The word ‘squandering’ has a negative connotation. Just like the image of a prodigal son squandering his fortune comes to mind first. In art, it can work paradoxically. It means squandering old sumuk paintings and doing new sumuk. I wanted to emphasize, ‘Let’s place the roots of experimentation in sumuk as a modern Korean painting.’”
- You trained students at Chung-Ang University, and I’m curious about the motivation behind opening a sumuk drawing artist training program at the Traditional Culture Foundation Lifelong Education Center in 2013.
“I want to talk about two things. One is the training process as an artist. You take a 4-year course at university, but after that, each person has to find their own path. The process of finding their own path is not easy. Even if you debut as an artist, you know your own shortcomings. Even if you want to overcome this deficiency, there is not much to practice. Another thing is the method of training. Experiments in modernizing Korean painting are carried out in various ways, such as using new materials. At some point, I realized that the root of aesthetics lies in ink and wash, and decided to work together based on ink and wash.”
- The roots of the “Brush Was Right” exhibition also seem to lie in the training course for ink and wash drawing artists. How does the training course proceed?
“It is a process of developing the artist’s capabilities for 2~4 years, and it requires a lot of patience. You have to draw 250 original pieces from the beginning, starting with the Four Gracious Plants, and drawing cousins using the lines of the Four Gracious Plants, etc. It is not easy to do it steadily and for a long time. I have been holding solo and group exhibitions for some of my students, and I think about 150 people came, but only 15 people remained and they held their own exhibitions.)”
- What message do you think the exhibition “Brush Was Right” by your students contains? I think each of your students has their own unique characteristics.
“Young Korean painting artists are interested in other materials while experimenting with Korean painting, but the core of Korean painting experiments lies in the brush. Experiments without a solid foundation of a brush are no different from a castle in the air. The work of friends who participated in “The Brush Was Right” before embodies the deep emotions and discomforts they encounter in life based on the solid foundation of ink and wash painting that I mentioned earlier. For example, they are finding their own formative language by expressing the feelings and realizations they encounter in their daily lives through a few images.”
It was possible to lead the ink and wash drawing artist training course for 10 years thanks to the will of Kim and the support of Park Min-ho, the head of the Traditional Culture Foundation.
Park, who has been running a program to revitalize Korean painting since 2012, explained the purpose by saying, “I opened the ink and wash drawing artist training course while thinking about how our traditional culture can be dressed in modern clothes and reach the public today.”
Park said, “I hope that this exhibition will make the soil of Korean painting more fertile and that artists who are reborn from the soil of the teacher will bloom the flowers of Korean painting in this era.”
