기독교복음선교회(세칭 JMS) 정명석 목사의 준 강간사건(1심 23년형 판결)이 세계적인 소송으로 비화(飛火)되고 있다. 기독교복음선교회(JMS) 한국교인협의회측은 5일 “지난 2월 29일(미국 동부시간대) 오전 넷플릭스 미국 본사를 대상으로 ‘명예훼손에 대한 손해배상’을 청구하는 소송장을 관할 주 지방법원에 제출했다”고 밝혔다. 이 사건이 국제화 됐음을 시사했다.
기독교복음선교회(JMS) 한국 교인협의회 대표인 곽동원 목사는 “지난 2023년 3월 3일 방영된 넷플릭스 다큐멘터리 ‘나는 신이다’에서 JMS 선교회를 부패하고 범죄를 저지른 집단으로 묘사해 정명석 목사와 교인들이 입은 정신적·물적 피해는 이루 말할 수 없을 정도로 막대하다”면서 “이에 선교회 각국 교인들이 넷플릭스 본사를 상대로 소송을 제기하기에 이르렀다”고 말했다. 그는 “당시에 정명석 목사는 성폭행 혐의로 수사를 받고 있었는데 ‘나는 신이다’가 방영되면서 언론과 방송에서 사실 확인이 되지 않은 1만 여 건에 이르는 보도가 쏟아져 정명석 목사가 1심에서 공정한 재판이 아닌 마녀사냥식 여론 몰이로 인한 여론재판을 받았다”고 덧붙였다.

기독교복음선교회(JMS) 한국 교인협의회가 문제 삼은 내용은 지난 2023년 3월 3일 방영된 넷플릭스 다큐멘터리 ‘나는 신이다’ 프로에서 사실을 왜곡하거나 조작된 내용을 방영했다는 것. 이에 대해 곽동원 목사는 “‘나는 신이다' 제작사인 A 방송사가 정명석 목사와 고소인의 녹취음성에 여성 신음소리를 짜깁기하고 허위로 자막을 내보내 성 피해 상황인 것처럼 편집해서 방영하고, 대역 배우를 성 피해자로 쓰고도 자막 표기를 하지 않아 시청자들이 마치 사실인 것처럼 오인하게 하는 등 논란이 된 부분이 있다”고 지적했다.
넷플릭스 상대 소장은 이 기업의 본사가 있는 미국의 관할 주 정부의 지방법원에 접수됐는데, 이 소장에는 매체가 아닌 OTT(Over The Top=인터넷으로 콘텐츠를 제공하는 서비스)가 왜곡-과장된 내용의 프로를 만들어 방송 등에 내보냈다는 게 법적 다툼의 요지인 것으로 알려졌다.
