브레이크뉴스 박동제 기자= 배우 이동휘, 허성태가 오는 21일 공개를 앞둔 <카지노>를 함께 한 최민식에 대한 존경심을 표했다.
1일 싱가포르에 위치한 마리나 베이 샌즈에서는 디즈니+ 한국 오리지널 시리즈 <카지노>의 기자간담회가 개최됐다. 이날 현장에는 강윤성 감독을 비롯해 배우 이동휘, 허성태가 참석해 눈길을 끌었다.
<카지노>는 돈도 빽도 없이 필리핀에서 카지노의 전설이 된 남자 ‘차무식(최민식 분)’이 살인사건에 휘말리면서 인생의 벼랑 끝 목숨 건 최후의 베팅을 시작하게되는 강렬한 이야기를 그린 작품이다.
이번 <카지노>에서 최민식은 전 재산을 잃고 바닥까지 갔다가 10년 만에 700억이라는 막대한 돈을 벌어들인 카지노의 전설이 된 남자 차무식 역을, 손석구는 파란만장한 인생사부터 그를 쫓는 제1대 코리안 데스크 오승훈 역을, 이동휘는 차무식의 둘도 없는 오른팔 양정팔 역을, 허성태는 차무식에게 또 다른 위협이 될 존재 서태석 역을 맡았다.
이날 <카지노> 촬영 현장에 대해 강윤성 감독은 “<카지노>는 이야기의 배경상 필리핀에서 3개월 가량 촬영했다. 못다한 촬영들은 국내에서 세트 촬영을 했다. 더운 것 외에는 필리핀 스태프들과 배우들의 호흡이 좋아 어려움 없던 현장이었다”고 말했다.
이동휘는 “사계절이 다양한 우리나라에서 지내다가 공교롭게도 여름만 겪고 있는 느낌이다. 필리핀에서 3개월 가량 촬영했다보니 적응이 되서 싱가포르가 익숙하다. 거기에 있었던 사람들, 음식 등 모든 것이 그립다. <카지노>가 잘 되서 필리핀에 금의환향했으면 좋겠다”고 전했다.
허성태는 “3개월 정도 필리핀에 있었는데, 첫 시작은 특별출연이었는데 시간이 지나면 지날수록 캐릭터의 비중이 커졌다. 시즌1을 마무리하고 시즌2를 여는 역할을 맡았는데 감독님을 믿고 따라가고 있다”고 말했고, 이에 강윤성 감독은 “원래 대본에서도 강렬하고 큰 역할이었는데, 작게 봤나보다”고 밝혔다.
강윤성 감독은 <카지노>로 첫 OTT 도전에 나선 소감을 묻자 “영화와 OTT의 다른 점은 이야기가 길다는 것이다. 긴 이야기의 호흡을 해본 적이 없다보니 두려움이 있었다. 그런데 <카지노> 이야기를 쓰다보니 이야기가 길어져 시리즈물이 됐다. 촬영은 전반적으로 영화와 비슷하게 흘러갔는데, 촬영 분량이 많다는 생각은 들었던 것 같다”며 <카지노> 시즌2를 처음부터 염두에 뒀냐는 질문에 “처음부터 긴 이야기를 생각했기 때문에 시즌제를 하고 싶었다”고 답했다.
강윤성 감독은 <카지노> 주연배우로 최민식을 캐스팅한 이유를 묻자 “최민식과는 <카지노> 전에 다른 영화를 준비하고 있었는데, 여러 이유로 중단하게 됐다. 이후 <카지노> 대본을 들였는데 출연을 결정해줬다. 다양한 스펙트럼을 보여줘야 하는 차무식 역은 최민식 외에는 생각할 수 없었다”고 전했다.
이동휘는 <카지노>를 함께 한 최민식과의 호흡에 대해 “많은 후배들이 선배님과 작업하고 싶을 것이고, 저 역시 롤모델처럼 생각한 선배님이었다. 실제 만나고 촬영해보니 실제로 지금 ‘민식앓이’ 중이다. 사랑스러움을 갖고 있으면서도 카리스가 넘치는 배우로서 귀감이 되는 선배님이다. 첫 장면을 촬영할 때 선배님의 얼굴과 눈빛, 세월이 묻어나는 아우라 등을 보니 이후 매 장면을 감탄하면서 보게 됐다”고 말했다.
허성태 역시 “제가 지금 배우라는 삶을 살고 있는데, 그 첫 시작은 최민식 선배님이다. 오디션에서 처음 한 역할이 <올드보이> 속 최민식 선배님의 연기였다. 그 이후 배우로서 삶을 살고 있다가 <카지노>에서 만나게 됐는데, 처음 ‘성태야’라고 제 이름을 불러줬을 때 전율이 올 정도였다”고 전했다.
이동휘는 강윤성 감독에 대해 “<카지노> 현장에서 겪은 감독님은 현장의 어머니 같았다. 모두를 감싸주기도 하고, 수많은 배우들의 아이디어를 잘 선택해 잘 표현해주는 것 같다. 그러다보니 더 믿고 의지하게 됐던 것 같다”고, 허성태는 “(강윤성 감독님은) 오픈 마인드 그 자체다. 포용력이 깊고, 배우들이 자유롭게 연기할 수 있도록 좋은 현장을 만들어줬다”고 밝혔다.
강윤성 감독은 <카지노>를 디즈니+와 작업한 이유를 묻자 “<카지노>는 표현의 수위기 중요햇는데, OTT는 표현의 수위가 없다보니 OTT로 도전하고 싶었다. <카지노> 대본을 각 OTT에 보냈는데, 디즈니+가 흔쾌히 제작을 결정해줬다”고 답했다.
<카지노> 관전 포인트에 대해 허성태는 “최민식 선배님의 멋진 연기를 볼 수 있는 작품이다”고, 이동휘는 “최고의 스타 ‘구씨‘의 차기작 손석구를 만날 수 있고, 저도 만날 수 있는 작품이다. 최민식의 복귀작, 손석구의 차기작, 이동휘의 그냥 작인 <카지노>를 주목해줬으면 한다”고, 강윤성 감독은 “리얼리티를 중시하며 작업했다. <카지노>는 힘이 있는 작품이라 생각한다. 만약 부족한 점이 있더라고 즐겁게 봐주면 감사할 것 같다”고 전했다.
