지난 9월 서울 코엑스에서 세계 3대 아트페어 프리즈(Frieze)가 한국국제아트페어(Kiaf)와 함께 열리던 때에 서울 한남동 소재 모제이 갤러리에서는 의식의 지층을 겹겹이 쌓아 올린 아티스트 제이 영(J Young)의 초대전을 열었다. 당시 프리즈에 참가한 세계 주요 갤러리 관계자들이 연일 갤러리를 찾아와 제이 영 작가의 작품을 관람하였다.
또한, 9월 1일부터 10월 21일까지 열렸던 작가 전시에는 국내 메이저 옥션과 주요 아트페어 관계자들은 물론 주요 컬렉터들이 작가의 전시를 관람하였다.
이처럼 국내외 미술시장을 주도하는 전문인들이 제이 영 아티스트의 작품을 주목하는 이유는 무엇일까? 필자는 깊은 의식을 바탕으로 실험적 변화를 연속적으로 추구하여온 제이 영 작가의 작품을 오랫동안 살펴왔다.
제이 영 아티스트가 최근에 발표하여 크게 주목받고 있는 일련의 작품은 자연에서 얻어진 숯을 바탕으로 존재의 본질을 승화시킨 깊은 울림을 담아낸 작품이다. 이는 오랫동안 연속되어온 작가의 다양한 작업의 집합과 같은 의미가 있다. 이를 의식적으로 접근하면 동안 펼쳐온 작업의 심층적인 정착과 같은 실체를 헤아리게 된다.
이와 같은 오랜 작업의 주요한 작품들로 구성된 전시회가 열렸다. 서울 한남동에 소재한 모제이 갤러리에 이어 이번에 새롭게 오픈한 부산 모제이 갤러리 개관기념전이다. 부산 해운대구 마린시티2로 33 (두산위브더제니스)에 소재하고 있는 부산 모제이 갤러리는 개관 기념전으로 제이 영 아티스트의 초대 개인전을 11월 28일 오픈하여 내년 1월 20일까지 전시한다.

아티스트 제이 영(J Young)은 이번 전시에서 대작 2점과 소품 15점을 선보였다. 작가의 작품 세계를 일목요연하게 제시하고 있는 엄선한 전시 작품에서 많은 내용이 살펴진다.
먼저 생명의 시간성을 중시한 돌과 나무들을 재료로 자연의 신성함을 승화시킨 시기 또는, 순간을 뜻하는 모멘트(Moment) 시리즈 작품이 눈길을 끈다. 이는 동양 사상과 철학에 담긴 자연과 인간의 인과성을 투영한 작품들이다. 자연과 인간의 대응과 순응이라는 사유성을 끝없이 변화하는 인간의 모습과 자연에 존재하는 돌의 불변함으로 대립시켜 인간성의 성찰을 섬세한 절제 속에 은유적으로 표현한 것이다.
이어 작가의 어린 시절 시골에서 매만져온 감성을 유년의 기억으로 쌓아 올린 의식의 지층과 같은 담장(wall) 작품이 전시되었다. 이는 경험의 영역에서 조화와 균형이 녹아내린 맨살과 같은 기억의 질감과 빛깔을 예술로 승화시킨 것이다. 어린 시절 돌담을 쌓고 흙을 바르는 기억을 통하여 더불어 살아가는 조화와 균형을 함축한 것이다.
이처럼 돌과 나무의 자연적 재료와 상징이 어우러진 모멘트(Moment) 시리즈 작품과 의식의 지층으로 바르고 쌓아 올린 담장(wall) 시리즈 작품을 지나면 각각 검은 숯과 하얀 순백의 숯으로 이루어진 120호 대작이 품은 존재의 본질을 승화시킨 깊은 울림을 만나게 된다.

제이 영 작가가 최근에 선보인 이와 같은 숯(Charcoal) 작업은 연속적인 실험 정신이 낳은 결실과 같은 승화된 예술이다. 이는 나무와 돌과 한지와 같은 오랫동안 사용하여온 자연적인 재료의 본질에 국한된 것이 아닌 존재라는 무한한 의식을 헤아렸다.
숯이란 생명으로 상징되는 나무를 가마에서 구워낸 탄소 덩어리이다. 모든 생명체를 이루는 유기물이면서 자연적인 존재의 기본 원소이다. 숯의 실체는 검은빛이지만, 검은 목탄과 하얀 재가 드러나는 이유로 백탄으로 구분하고 있다. 이를 물리적으로 헤아리면 목탄은 가마에서 구워내 자연적으로 불을 끄는 소화법으로 이루어진 숯이며 백탄은 흙과 모래로 덮어 강제로 불을 끄는 소화법으로 얻어진다.
제이 영 아티스트 작품에서 가장 주시할 내용은 이와 같은 숯을 재료로 하는 세계 작가들의 작품과 극명하게 차별화되는 특성적인 기법과 깊은 의식이다. 제이 영 작가는 숯이라는 대상을 보편적인 오브제로 활용하는 작가와 달리 캔버스에 쪼개고 쏟아붓는 작업을 통하여 물성의 심미적 상황을 연출한다. 이는 목탄과 백탄의 물리적 현상을 존재의 본질로 인식하여 해체한 작가의 깊은 의식이다.
이러한 심미적 형태미에 자연적인 광물 흑연과 천연 안료 피그먼트와 바인더를 혼합한 재료를 겹겹의 얇은 붓질로 칠하며 검은 숯 목탄과 순백의 백탄을 탄생시킨다. 이는 어떤 대상을 묘사하는 붓질의 페인팅이 아닌 물질의 존재적 가치를 아름다움으로 형태화하는 고난도의 작업이다.

이처럼 덩어리진 숯이 들어박힌 오브제 작업에서부터 미세한 숯가루가 번쩍이는 질감의 실체는 존재의 본질을 승화시켜 오랜 역사의 숨결로 표현한 것이다. 이는 현실적인 실재를 의미하는 존재(existence-存在)라는 관점에서 아티스트 제이 영은 세상의 근본적인 실재에서 물질을 헤아린 유물론과 정신을 헤아린 유심론을 덩어리진 숯으로 품어 아름다움으로 승화시킨 것이다.

Jay Young's recent charcoal work is a sublimated art, like the fruit of his continuous experimental spirit. This counted the infinite consciousness of existence that is not limited to the essence of natural materials that have been used for a long time, such as wood, stone, and Korean paper.

From the perspective of existence, which means realistic reality, artist Jay Young has sublimated into beauty by embracing materialism that considers matter and spiritualism that counts spirit in the fundamental reality of the world with lumpy charcoal.
