'후지시로 세이지 북촌스페이스' 미술관 개관 후 '관객 응원과 찬사'

한국 전래동화를 카게에로 담은 동화책 및 카게에 원화 선보여

그림자 회화(카게에) 거장 후지시로 세이지의 작은 미술관 <후지시로 세이지 북촌스페이스>가 올 3월 개관하여 많은 이들의 관심을 받고 있다. 지난해 예술의전당 <빛과 그림자의 판타지  전(展)>을 성공리에 마치고 연 이 미술관은 특히 한국 전래동화를 카게에로 담은 동화책 및 카게에 원화도 선보여 눈길을 끌고 있다.

 

 올해 99세를 맞은 작가 후지시로 세이지는 일본을 비롯한 해외에서 100회 이상의 전시를 개최한 바 있으며 뉴욕 타임즈와 워싱턴 포스트로부터 ‘동양의 디즈니’라는 찬사를 받기도 했다. 그는 NHK방송국이 개국할 당시 시험 방송을 맡아 방송 콘텐츠 성장에 큰 역할을 담당했고 작품 활동을 통해 수차례 국가 훈장을 받기도 하는 등, 일본 문화 전반에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 이번 전시 <고양이 뉴욕에 가다>는 작가의 작품에 자주 등장하는 동물에 대한 순수한 애정과 그의 작품 활동을 조망할 수 있도록 기획했다.

 

 미술관은 1층 라운지, 2층 전시실, 3층 아카이브 룸으로 구성되어 있으며 <고양이 뉴욕에 가다> 카게에 원화와 <풍칫찻풍의 풍선 여행> 수채화 작품을 비롯한 스케치 작품 여러 점을 만나볼 수 있다. 또한 한 세기에 가까운 그의 작품 활동을 정리한 연혁 및 영상 자료도 아카이브 룸에서 확인할 수 있다.

특히 이번 전시에는 작가가 1958년과 1962년에 모노크롬으로 작업한 한국 전래동화 「선녀와 나무꾼」, 「개와 고양이와 구슬」을 카게에로 담아낸 <엄마가 들려주는 동화>도 함께 선보인다. 작가는 “한국을 잘 알고 싶고, 한국을 더 가까이하고 싶다. 한국에서도 나의 작품을 소개할 수 있는 작은 공간으로 여러분을 초대할 수 있어 기쁘다.”라는 인사와 함께, ‘“한국에서 삶의 기쁨 씨앗이 싹터 세계로 퍼져나가길 기원한다.”라며 한국에 대한 깊은 애정과 당부의 말을 전했다.

 

미술관 <후지시로 세이지 북촌스페이스>가 있는 서울시 종로구 계동은 조선시대 가난한 백성의 질병 치료를 위한 제생원이 있던 동네이다. 또한 미술관으로 조성한 공간인 대중목욕탕 「중앙탕」은 1960년대부터 수많은 이들이 몸을 씻기 위해 찾던 곳이다. 미술관(관장 강혜숙)은 ’작가가 한평생 추구해온 주요 메시지 사랑·평화·공생을 일상에서도 누릴 수 있길 바란다는 뜻을 전했다. 

 

한편 작가는 지난 2021년 예술의 전당에서 개최한 <빛과 그림자의 판타지 전(展)>을 통해 사랑과 공생의 메시지를 담은 작품 160여 점을 선보였으며, 환상적이고 동심 가득한 작품으로 많은 관객의 응원과 찬사를 받은 바 있다.

The small art museum <Fujishiro Seiji Bukchon Space> by the master of shadow painting (Kagee), Seiji Fujishiro, opened in March this year and is attracting a lot of attention. This museum, which opened after the successful completion of the <Fantasy Exhibition of Light and Shadow> at the Seoul Arts Center last year, is attracting attention by presenting children's books containing Korean folk tales as kagee and original paintings in Kagee.

 

 Artist Seiji Fujishiro, who turns 99 this year, has held more than 100 exhibitions in Japan and abroad, and has been praised by the New York Times and Washington Post as “oriental Disney”. He played a big role in the growth of broadcasting contents by taking a trial broadcast at the time NHK Broadcasting Station was founded. This exhibition, <Cat Goes to New York>, was designed to provide a glimpse into the artist's pure affection for animals and his work activities.

 

  The museum consists of a lounge on the 1st floor, an exhibition room on the 2nd floor, and an archive room on the 3rd floor, and you can see several sketches, including original paintings by Kagee of <Cat Going to New York> and watercolor works of <Journey of a Balloon in the Wind Chitcha>. In addition, you can check the history and video materials that summarize the activities of his works close to a century in the archive room.

In particular, this exhibition will also feature <A Fairy Tale from Mom>, which contains the Korean traditional fairy tales 「The Fairy and the Woodcutter」 and 「The Dog, the Cat, and the Marbles」, which the artist worked on in monochrome in 1958 and 1962, in kage. The artist said, “I want to know Korea well, and I want to get closer to Korea. I am happy to invite you to a small space where I can introduce my work in Korea.” He said, “I hope that the seeds of joy in life will sprout in Korea and spread to the world.” and a word of encouragement.

Gye-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, where the art museum <Fujishiro Seiji Bukchon Space> is located, is a neighborhood where a Jesaengwon was used to treat diseases of the poor during the Joseon Dynasty. In addition, the public bath “Jungangtang”, a space created as an art museum, has been a place where many people have been visiting since the 1960s to wash themselves. The museum (director Hye-sook Kang) said, “The main message that the artist has pursued throughout his life is love, peace, and symbiosis in our daily lives.
