휴+네트워크 창작스튜디오 두 번째 릴레이전_김자연 개인전이 9월 23일부터 10월 20일까지 파주출판단지에 있는 아트스페이스 휴에서 전시중이다.
김자연 작가는 작가가 쓴 소설을 바탕으로 회화 작업을 이어가고 있다. 이번 전시는 김 작가가 쓴 장편소설『유령섬(Phantom Island)』의 두 번째 장인 <오렌지 색 사막(Orange desert and a windowless house)>을 기반으로 한 20점의 신작을 선보인다.
김자연 작가는 사적인 경험의 순간들 중 추상적이고 감상적인 파편에 허구적 요소를 가미해 ‘유령섬(Phantom Island)’이라는 허구의 세계를 설정했다.
이 곳은 지도에는 존재하지만 실제 존재하지 않는다는 특이점을 갖는다. 이는 작가가 다루는 작업 대상과도 연결된다. 작가는 인간의 내면, 그 중에서 쉽게 부정되어 감추어지도록 요구되는 우울, 무기력, 상념과 같은 종류의 감정들을 중점으로 그림을 그리고 있다. 이러한 개인의 감정들은 분명 존재하지만 현대사회 가운데에서는 마치 그 존재를 감춰야 할 것으로 취급되고 있다.
작가는 대형 캔버스에 낮은 채도의 짙은 색을 사용해 자신의 심상을 담은 유령섬의 풍경들을 그려왔다. 무의식과 직관의 움직임을 따라 나무와 숲이 무성한 자연의 이미지를 그려내던 작가는 이번 시리즈에서 의자에 ‘오브제’와 같이 앉아있는 인체를 회화의 대상으로 삼는다. 기존에 숲의 나무 형상에 빗대어 표현하던 사람의 인영을 <앉아있는_object>, <앉아있는_사람>, <앉아있는_얼굴>의 작업을 통해 보다 더 전면에 드러내 보이기를 시도한다.
특히 이번 인물화의 특징은 ‘의자 위의 앉아있는 인물’이다. 몸을 동그랗게 말아 웅크린 자세를 취하거나 의자에 기대 팔다리를 늘어뜨린 채 널브러지거나 드러누운 자세 등 앉아있다는 느낌보다는 의자 위에 놓인 어떤 오브제를 연상하게 한다. 이러한 인물의 자세는 작가가 설정한 의자의 의미와 관계된다. 의자는 안락을 제공하는 동시에 사회적인 속박을 뜻한다. 그림에서 인물을 인물이 아닌 하나의 대상으로서 보게 하는 장치가 되기도 한다.
풍경에 빗대어 자신의 감정을 에둘러 가는 방법으로 표현하던 작가는 이제 돌아가지 않고 그를 드러내 직시하는 편을 택했다. 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 이러한 변화를 있는 그대로 마주하도록 만드는 공간인 ‘창이 없는 집’으로 관람자를 초대한다.
