Samsung Electronics, operating profit of 51.63 trillion won in 2021, set a new record in sales

On a consolidated basis, Samsung Electronics announced on the 27th that it posted 76.57 trillion won in sales and 13.87 trillion won in operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2021.

In 2021, it recorded 279.6 trillion won in sales and 51.63 trillion won in operating profit.

Despite continued uncertainty, Samsung Electronics achieved record sales based on differentiated products and technological competitiveness. All four quarters of 2021 recorded the highest sales in the same quarter, and also broke record sales on an annual basis.

Sales in the fourth quarter were 76.57 trillion won, an increase of 3.5% from the previous quarter and 24.4% from the same period of the previous year, centered on set businesses such as sales expansion of premium smartphones such as foldable phones and strong sales of TV and home appliances during the year-end peak season.

The operating profit for the fourth quarter was 13.87 trillion won, with an operating profit margin of 18.1%. Operating profit decreased by 1.95 trillion won compared to the previous quarter due to a decline in memory prices and an increase in smartphone year-end marketing expenses, while special incentive payments were affected. Compared to the same period last year, both operating profit and operating profit margin improved significantly, mainly in semiconductors.

First, semiconductors recorded sales of 26.10 trillion won and operating profit of 8.84 trillion won in the fourth quarter.

Memory sales declined slightly QoQ due to a slight drop in average selling price (ASP) while refraining from excessive sales expansion in consideration of the future market conditions and inventory level. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the company's performance improved significantly thanks to the expansion of advanced processes and an increase in ASP.

The foundry achieved the highest quarterly sales thanks to the overall supply expansion, but profitability declined slightly QoQ due to the increase in advanced process costs. Compared to the same period of the previous year, earnings improved thanks to the operation of the Pyeongtaek S5 line and the effect of price adjustments.

Display recorded 9.6 trillion won in sales and 1.32 trillion won in operating profit in the fourth quarter.

In the small and medium-sized panel, earnings grew QoQ on the back of strong demand for new smartphone products from major customers and increased sales of new applications. In the large-size panel, the deficit widened significantly due to the decline in LCD prices and the impact of the initial cost of QD display.

The IM (IT & Mobile Communications) division recorded sales of 28.95 trillion won and operating profit of 2.66 trillion won in the fourth quarter.

MX (Mobile eXperience) sales increased slightly thanks to the expansion of sales of premium smartphones such as foldable phones and solid sales of Galaxy Device ecosystem products such as PCs, tablets, and wearables. Operating profit decreased QoQ due to year-end marketing expenses increase, but increased YoY. Network performance improved QoQ thanks to growth in domestic and overseas business sales.

The CE (Consumer Electronics) division recorded sales of 15.35 trillion won and operating profit of 700 billion won in the fourth quarter.

Although it achieved the highest quarterly sales ever thanks to strong sales of premium products during the year-end peak season, profits slightly decreased QoQ due to increased logistics costs.

Samsung Electronics merged the existing IM and CE divisions into the DX division in December 2021, but maintained the existing IM and CE divisions in the 4Q earnings announcement for consistency with the 1st to 3rd quarter results.

The welcome effect was about 300 billion won compared to the previous quarter, which had a positive effect on operating profit. As major emerging market currencies showed an overall weakness against the won, there were some negative effects centered on the set business.

In 2021, facility investment was 48.2 trillion won, and by business, it was 43.6 trillion won for semiconductors and 2.6 trillion won for displays.

For memory, facility investment was carried out centered on the expansion of facilities in Pyeongtaek and Xian to respond to the demand for advanced processes such as EUV-based 15-nm DRAM and V6 NAND, process conversion, and investment in infrastructure for the P3 line in Pyeongtaek. Memory investment increased compared to the previous year as the application of next-generation technologies, including EUV, was preemptively expanded.

The investment in the foundry was centered on the expansion of the Pyeongtaek EUV 5-nano advanced process. The display investment focused on small and medium-sized modules and QD displays.

In the first quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics plans to actively respond to customer demand by expanding differentiated products amid expectations for a recovery in memory demand. The set business plans to focus on maintaining solid profitability by strengthening premium leadership through the launch of new smartphones and TVs.

Amid some uncertainties regarding memory, the company plans to focus on optimizing its portfolio by expanding sales of high-tech processes and high value-added products following the recovery of demand for servers and PCs.

System LSI will focus on supplying major components such as SoC (System on Chip) and CIS (image sensor) for flagship products of major customers, and the foundry plans to expand supply through advanced process production and improvement of yield stability.

In the case of small and medium-sized displays, despite the off-peak season for smartphones, major customers' new smartphone launches and the expansion of customers using foldable displays are expected to improve performance compared to the same period last year. The large-sized company's losses are expected to be partially alleviated by mass production of QD displays.

MX is expected to grow sales and profits and achieve a solid profit margin despite the shortage of parts supply by launching new flagship models and expanding sales of mid-priced 5G smartphones and tablets and wearables. The network plans to pursue new global orders, including Europe, in addition to existing customers.

For video displays and home appliances, the TV market is expected to enter the off-season and demand for home appliances is expected to decrease. In addition to focusing on premium products, Samsung Electronics plans to focus on improving profitability by increasing the proportion of new growth products and online sales.
