언론의 심층취재 프로의 보도와 관련돼 보도 이후의 여론 작용(作用)을 말할 때 ‘저격(狙擊)됐다’란 말이 있다. 취재 의도대로 취재 대상자의 사회적 위상이 크게 추락하는 것을 의미한다. 이와 반대로 ‘붐업(boom up)’이란 용어도 있다. 심도있게 비판을 했는데도 시청의 여론이 그 반대로 형성되어 '유행을 크게 일으킨다'는 것을 붐업(boom up)이라고 한다.
허경영 국가혁명당 대통령 후보에 대한 sbs의 비판 보도가 이 형국(形局)이다.
sbs는 12월 5일자 기사에서 “[스브스 야(夜)] '그알' 허경영 지지자 "그는 백궁에서 온 神인"…대천사 등록비 1억 원 등 '후원 러시'”라는 제목의 프로에서 허경영 국가혁명당 대통령 후보를 발가벗겼다. 이 방송은 “허경영은 종교인일까, 정치인일까?”라고 묻고 있다. sbs 측은 “4일 방송된 SBS '그것이 알고 싶다'에서는 '하늘궁과 청와대-허경영은 무엇을 꿈꾸나'라는 부제로 또다시 대통령 선거 후보로 나선 허경영 대통령 예비 후보와 그의 왕국 하늘궁에 대해 조명했다. 파격적이고 유쾌한 행보로 눈길을 끌었던 허경영, 하지만 누군가에게는 그는 더 이상 유쾌한 인물이 아니었다.”고 보도했다.
sbs의 이같은 내용의 비판보도가 허경영 국가혁명당 대통령 후보에게 독(毒)이 될까? 그 반대로 약(藥)이 될까? 선거 과정인데, 과연 sbs가 공평의 법칙에 따라 이재명-윤석열 등 타 당 후보들도 이와 같은 비판적 시각의 프로를 만들 수 있을지? 이 같은 의문이 뒤따른다.
sbs측은 이 보도에서 “허경영에게 마음을 사로잡혀 거액의 빚을 내 그를 지지하고 후원하는 이들의 가족이 바로 그 주인공. 허경영을 신이라 부르는 사람들은 허경영의 눈만 봐도 병이 낫고 행운이 올 거라 믿었다. 그래서 그를 후원하기 위해 거액의 돈을 융통했다. 이런 이들의 가족들은 가족들이 변하기 시작한 것이 하늘 궁에 다녀온 뒤라고 했다. 스스로 하늘에서 내려온 신인이라며 인류를 심판하러 왔다는 허경영. 그는 앞서 지난 2009년 고 이병철 회장의 양자이며, 박정희의 비밀 보좌관, 당시 박근혜 한나라당 대표와 결혼하기로 했다는 주장을 했고 이는 모두 거짓말이었다”고 결론지었다.
또한, sbs측은 이날 보도에서 “허경영의 주장은 달랐다. 그는 본인이 가진 신인의 에너지를 이용해 번 돈으로 정치를 했을 뿐이라고 했다. 취재 중 제작진은 하늘 궁 주변의 부동산들이 상당수 허경영과 그의 신도들에 의해 매입된 사실을 확인했다. 그렇다면 이 돈은 어디서 오는 것일까? 축복, 백궁 명패, 대천사, 초우주 에너지 상품들과 허경영 굿즈까지 판매해 수익을 내고 있는 하늘 궁. 전문가는 하늘 궁의 재무상태표를 분석하고 깜짝 놀랐다. 그는 ‘매출액이 97억 정도 되는 그런 사업인데 영업 이익이 95억 원이다. 결론은 비용이 거의 드는 게 없다는 것인데 돌로 다이아몬드를 만들어 판다고 해도 이것보다 덜 남을 거다’라고 했다”고 알렸다.
아울러 sbs측은 이날 보도에서 “취재 중 허경영이 종교 재단의 재단 이사일 뿐 아니라 최고 지도자 종정이라는 것을 확인했다. 그는 분명 자신을 교주나 종교인이 아니라고 수차례 말했지만 이미 종교인이었던 것. 이에 제작진은 허경영의 이야기를 직접 들어보려 인터뷰를 요청했다. 어렵게 일정이 잡혔지만 결국 허경영 측에서 이를 거절했다. 그리고 제작진은 급히 하늘 궁에서 자리를 떠나는 허경영을 포착했다. 종교인이 아니라고 했지만 종교 법인을 설립한 종교인 허경영은 서민을 위한 정치를 하겠다고 했지만 6억 원대의 고가의 차를 타고 그렇게 사라졌다”고, 기사화 했다.
sbs의 표적 보도는 국가혁명당 허경영 대통령 후보에게는 심각하게 타격을 입힐 수 있는 내용으로 가득 찼다. 이러한 보도를 본 국가혁명당측의 대응은 어떠할까?
국가혁명당측은 sbs측의 이 같은 보도에 대해 5일 “여론조사 지지도 3위, 허경영 대선 후보에 대한 음해공작 즉각 중단하라” 제목의 논평을 발표, 첫 대응을 시작했다. 이 논평에서 그치지는 않을 것이다. 그의 정책을 성경처럼 믿는 단합된 정치적 지지자들이 있기 때문이다.
국가혁명명당은 이 논평에서 “최근 허경영 국가혁명당 대선(大選) 후보가 여론조사에서 3위로 안철수, 심상정 등을 제치고 이재명, 윤석열 양당 후보와 3자 대결 구도를 굳히고 있으며 특히, 20~30 연령층에서 양당 후보를 위협하자 ‘허경영 죽이기’ 각종 음모론이 유포되고 있다”고 설명하고 “허경영 후보를 음해하는 공작정치는 공정선거를 심각히 위협하는 선거법 위반 사례로 중앙선거관리위원회는 그 출처를 철저히 조사하고 사법처리해야 한다. 12월 4일 11시 45분부터 방영된 SBS ‘그것이 알고 싶다’의‘허경영 죽이기’는 공중파 방송의 공공성을 역행하고, 국민 지지도 3위로 치솟고 있는 허 후보에 대한 불공정 방영에 대하여 ‘정정보도·재방영 금지’를 요구한다”고 피력했다.
이어 “허경영은 많은 정치인들을 통틀어 세금을 최고 고액을 납부하고 있고 여⋅야 거대정당의 두 후보에 비하면, 너무 투명해서 속이 다 비칠 정도이다. 대장동을 비롯한 여⋅야 후보들의 끊임없는 의혹들을 SBS ‘그것이 알고 싶다’ 프로는 취재/보도 할 수 있는가? ‘그것이 알고 싶다'에 묻고 싶다”면서 “또한, 중앙선관위는 공명정대한 선거를 위해서라도 허경영 대선 후보 죽이기 등, 각종 음모를 선거법 위반으로 발본색원하기를 촉구한다”고 요구했다.
sbs는 12월 5일자 기사는 정치 성향의 내용도 담고 있다. “허경영의 지지자들은 그가 대통령이 되면 이루겠다는 공약을 굳게 믿고 있었다. 그가 언급한 33가지 공약은 실현 가능할까? 이에 전문가는 그의 공약을 면밀히 분석했다. 허경영이 약속한 국가가 개인에게 지급해야 할 금액은 연간 5,869조 원. 이에 다양한 재원 마련 방안을 내세웠지만 실현 가능성이 없는 것으로 확인됐다. 이에 전문가는 ‘서민을 위한 것이라고 했지만 결국은 서민을 속이는 공약이다. 그리고 공약이라기보다 위시 리스트에 가까운 것이다’라고 지적했다. 내 가족이 더 나은 세상에서 살길 바라는 마음으로 허경영을 찾았던 지지자들. 나라에 돈이 없는 게 아니라 도둑이 많다던 허경영, 대선을 앞둔 지금 사람들의 간절한 마음을 이용하고 있는 나라의 도둑은 정말 누구일까?”라고 의문을 제기하고 있다. 허경영의 정치공약과 관련 “서민을 위한 것이라고 했지만 결국은 서민을 속이는 공약”이라고, 허경영에게 ‘저격(狙擊)’을 가하고 있는 것.
허경영 대통령 후보를 갈갈이 찢듯 비판 보도한 sbs측의 보도결과가 과연 어떤 사회적 현상을 만들어낼까? 그의 정치생명을 끊는 ‘저격성(狙擊性) 보도가 될까, 아니면 ‘붐업(boom up)’ 효과를 만들어 낼까? 약자에게 혹독한 sbs측의 4일치 보도가 여기서 그치지 않고 강자에게도 적용될까? 필자에게 “허경영 입장에서 이 프로의 재산적 가치를 평가하라면 1천원어치의 효과를 수반할 것”이라고 평하고 싶다. 신출귀몰(神出鬼沒), 날렵한 허경영을 널리 알렸기 때문이다.
