An incident in which the ‘me’ who was alive and fluttering died

“If you don’t die big, you can’t live big”

- Poet Kim Deok-kwon

There is a saying that one hundred cheokgandu progresses. Probably everyone has experienced despair as if standing on a distant cliff. So did I. ‘I don’t know!’ I said and threw myself off the cliff. Then, one day, I trembled with joy as I was greeted with a dazzling light before my eyes.

It was a long time ago when Buddha Sakyamuni was a monk called ‘Snow Mountain Dongja’. One day while I was sitting and studying, I heard a subtle singing voice from somewhere.

“All things are impermanent and nothing is eternal. This is the law of birth and death.” When I went to the place where the song was heard, a 'Rachel' was lying down hungry.

When Snow Mountain asks him to finish the last verse, Rachal says he can't because he's hungry. If the snowman sang the latter verse, he offered to feed his body. It was only then that Rachel sang the rest of the verses.

“Life and annihilation is the joy of death and destruction. ‘When birth and death disappear together, it is said that this is a quiet joy.’” At this time, Rachel was transformed into Jeseokcheon (帝釋天) and received the child's body so that not even the tip of a hair was injured.

How is it? This means that unless you die big, you can't live big. If you live big, it means that you can wake up big only by taking one more step from the Baekcheokgandu. <Baekcheokgandujinilbo!> This is a term derived from Zen Buddhism, meaning to go one step further on a 100-foot tall pole.

This word refers to the courage to move forward to a new state that has continued without being complacent or obsessed with the developed state. That high and dangerous state is the Baekcheok Gandu. As we practice, the dangerous and precarious situation will already be the same as that of a hundred cheokgandu

Of course, 'baekcheokgandu' refers to a high state. However, ‘even if you have already attained a high level of training, you can only realize the truth of the universe and rise to the state of Buddha by taking one more step from the end of that pole.

Zhuhui (朱熹: 1130~1200), a Confucian scholar from the Southern Song Dynasty in China, thought that it was a good expression to reveal the endless progress of science while being wary of the Buddhist color of this word. And he wrote a verse from the early modern history of the Tang Dynasty (招賢大師) like this:

“Those who do not move on the top of a hundred poles may have reached the realm, but they are not at the real level. The world of the ten directions will be perfected in this body when I take one more step forward from the top of the one-hundred-chest limb.” The act of stepping off the high, one hundred-cheeked limbo is to realize the truth only when you let go of the only thing that supports you.

It is truly a terrifying and trembling White Cheek Gandhi. We, as practitioners, face the insignificant limitations, and now we must step away from what we have believed and relied on and take a new step towards a place we have not yet been to.

In this way, we call the state of being advanced from Baekcheokgandu 'dono (頓悟)'. The end of life and death, that is, the end of life and death, is called the end of life and death. There are two things that you can realize by realizing this money.

First, I know for myself that I (我), that is, life and death, is completely dead.

Second, we know that there is ‘that’ that has been hidden in ‘I’.

‘That’ is the blank space and background between thoughts. After that, the ‘I’ still functions as before, but now there is no subjective entity that played the role of the main character. As in the past, greed and habit continue to occur according to unconscious causation, but since the subject ('I') that penetrates them has disappeared, there are traces of whether it happens or not. This will not remain.

When I practice in this way, I expect that I will realize something, break free from cravings, and attain infinite freedom. But what disappears is not the desire, but the ‘I’. So it's not that I'm free, it's that I'm freed from 'I'.

However, ‘dono’ may happen as an experience like a thunderbolt as the causality of the practice gradually builds up, or it may happen without realizing it, and then suddenly turn around and realize that the work is over. In other words, it is different for each practitioner.

Therefore, it would be wrong to read someone's old book and wait for such an experience to occur, or to assume that there is only one experience that will lead to enlightenment. Rather, there is a risk of being caught in that experience. In particular, caution should be exercised in pursuing and holding back the 'that' realized through Dono as the habit of rolling thoughts in the past still works as an object of enlightenment.

So, ‘Don-oh’ is a change of consciousness, a change in the way you see the world, and a great innovation within yourself. It is an incident where the ‘me’ who was alive and alive during this time died. In this way, if we burn our passion with the heart to make progress in our studies or business, wouldn't there be nothing we couldn't achieve? duksan4037@daum.net
