 Gordian's Knot

Kim Young-hee, CEO of the Endless Mothers Research Institute

A few years ago, there was an invitational lecture hosted by a certain school district. It was a themed plan in which four speakers were invited to give relay lectures at weekly intervals about children's education. I was the speaker on the third day. About 200 parents of elementary, middle and high school students and education related persons attended the event. The theme of my lecture was 'There are no iron rules for parenting'.

I was driving that day and the road to the lecture hall was blocked because it was under construction. At the same time, “The Story of the Gordian Knot” came out on the radio with a beautiful melody, and I was deeply moved.

“When the ancient Phrygia country in Asia Minor was in chaos due to civil war, Gordian, a poor farmer, was crowned king according to the oracle that the first person to come in a chariot would save the country and become king. After becoming king, he enshrined his chariot in the temple of Zeus and tied it with intricate knots. Together with the oracle, the person who unties this knot will become the ruler of Asia.

In the hundreds of years that followed, many people tried to untie the knot to become the rulers of Asia. No one succeeds. One day, Alexander appears and cuts the knot with a single knife. Alexander eventually becomes the ruler of Asia according to the oracle.”

This is the story of the ‘Gordian Knot’, often quoted as meaning that it solves complex problems that cannot be solved no matter how hard they try, in a bold way that others have not thought of at once. What's more interesting is what happens after that. The knot was split into several pieces because the tightly tied knot was cut into pieces without untying it. Many people died in the war of conquest, and after Alexander, who died suddenly at the age of 33, the empire was divided into three like this knot.

As such, it is easy to get caught up in the thought of cutting it off with a single knife when problems in our lives are not well resolved. Few problems in our lives can be solved with such simplicity and clarity. Rather, doing so may lead to more problems. If you want to solve a problem properly, you have no choice but to hang on to the knot and untie it one by one so as not to damage the knot.

Did I say that children are ‘Aemuldanji’? When raising a child, unexpected events sometimes twist the relationship and make it worse. Parents can't stand their resentment when this happens, so they scold and blame the child. As a result, even the buds of will are pruned away. Then, when the reason comes back, I regret saying, 'I was really wrong,' and I take out a parenting book, read the author's lecture hall, and meet the child with a new determination or a reflection mode.

Most of the parents I met in the lecture hall consistently blame themselves for not being able to raise children according to the parenting book or the lecturer's words. After listening to the lecture, it is said that for about three days, the weak foot begins to work, and then it turns into a doroamita Buddha. Let's assume that it is not the law of habit inertia as a matter of course. It is important to note that the conditions and circumstances in which the child is placed are different.

This is the reason why I get hurt badly while trying to raise like everyone else. It is similar to a purposeless job of blindly following someone else to the market. With the consolation of awakening it, I sometimes say the exact opposite to parents who are still young, contrary to the orthodox parenting method.

“Even the parenting method that other people say is good for my child is useless if it doesn’t suit me. On the contrary, it can be toxic. Truly good parenting is case-by-case, customized parenting for your child. The most important thing is that unconditional love, like a grandmother's love, must be at the base. Good parents floating around, take note of good parenting methods, but don't be deceived. It is only when I get out of the fixed frame that I can see the insides of my child. Curved thinking can be a shortcut to successful parenting.”

What do you usually think of when you encounter a complex problem that is often difficult to solve with your child? It's easy to change your old thinking. In other words, it is a change of thinking. For example, I tend to ask for courage not to teach instead of trying to teach. After the lecture, a mother in her early 50s applied for counseling because of her child.

She said, "My child is a sophomore in high school, and she got into a heterosexual accident and became pregnant, and she was on the verge of suspension."

The partner is her classmate's boyfriend, and her parents say they'll actively defend and accept the girl. She said, "Like a daughter-in-law, her head hurts as there are divided opinions about whether she should bring her child to study abroad or transfer her to another area," she said.

“Ah, this is my Achilles heel and Gordian’s knot.”

If a serious problem emerges, she either seeks advice from her mother next door or those around her, or puts the thought of cutting it off with her dagger like Gordian's knot on top. In any case, if the parents themselves are not strong enough, they are bound to sway like a reed. What's more, it's even more so when it comes to children who have been nurtured.

It will work in a similar way for rough friction with children. The problem of growing children is not simple. Of course, problems such as appendectomy that need to be solved at once are an exception. But if I want to solve the problem properly, I have no choice but to untie the knots by hand. You have to keep the flow that the child always becomes the subject and solves problems in an orderly manner. If such time accumulates, we will be able to completely untie the uncomfortable knot without hurting each other.

They give birth to children and raise them for 20 to 30 years. Those years seem like a long time, but when you look at them, it goes by in the blink of an eye. a lot of reflection It is understandable that there are regrets that I wish I had done as a parent when the child was five years old. Parents are full of mistakes and shortcomings unless they are gods. Fortunately, while raising children, the parents also grow up little by little, so it can be said that they are becoming wise people.

Sometimes we feel restless with the Gordian knot in our arms. There are times when raising a child requires courage like a straight line, and there are times when the wisdom, patience and insight of curves are required. What is the ‘Gordian Knot’ that you need to untie?
