For the globalization of ideas and publications

The government should provide extensive support for the publishing business that produces and distributes knowledge...

-Jong-cheol Lee, Ph.D. in Philosophy

The most striking phenomenon in relation to cultural contents these days is the globalization of Hallyu contents. Of course, before that, exports of the Korean economy, such as semiconductors and automobiles, laid the groundwork for wheat. While K-dramas and K-pops take the lead and stand behind, it is natural that K-contents made up of Korean films such as 'Parasite' and 'Minari' are spreading all over the world, from the Asian stage to the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. it feels like In the era of Corona, K quarantine stands out, and it is becoming a model for quarantine around the world.

'Squid Game', which was recently released on Netflix, has risen to the top spot in dramas around the world. What is the reason why people around the world are so enthusiastic about dramas that are not particularly eye-catching for Koreans, who are always suffering from hellish competition? Hollywood is blatantly expressing that this surge of K-dramas and movies poses a significant threat to the dominance of traditional Hollywood. It is no longer a problem to enter Hollywood, but a phenomenon in which one day, one day, they are suddenly competing for supremacy with Hollywood.

However, unlike this phenomenon, there are places where a peculiar and still contradictory appearance is seen. On the one hand, the income of one-sided theory revealed in Korea's humanities and social sciences and, on the other hand, Korean publishers are making no effort to escape the narrow domestic reading market. Since the income of the humanities and social sciences has been made steadily and unilaterally since modernization, it may not be anything new, but shouldn't it be necessary to build an original and independent theory outside of translation income and advance abroad? It is regrettable that domestic scholars still fail to pay attention to the outside market and readers.

In this regard, I would like to focus on publishing my work in multiple languages in the future. I have already started translating the English and Russian versions of 『Philosophy and Criticism - Essay for Philosophy』 (Book Publishing Suryu Hwagae, 2021). During the academic excursion from Baikal to St. Petersburg!, starting on November 1, this book will be introduced and presented to related scholars from a number of universities and research institutes, and an English version will soon be announced. Next, I am currently preparing a philosophy book for the general public, which I am working on in collaboration with scholars working abroad.

We decided to finish this book within six months and prepare both the Korean version and the English version to advance to Amazon. It can be said that it is a very exceptional case for a native Korean scholar to write a book aimed at the Amazon from the beginning, but now I think that Korean scholars should also write with this perspective. Anyway, through each of these works, Korean theory and philosophy will become a stepping stone to the world.

Next, everyone knows that Korea's reading market is small and Koreans have neither time nor will to read books because they are exposed to so many different media. Nevertheless, it is even bizarre to see that Korean publishers are hardly thinking of entering the foreign market for foreign books outside of this palm-sized publishing market. Exporting has been a slogan from the early days of the Korean economy, but even women's hair was collected to make wigs and export them. Since then, construction workers have entered the Middle East, and today, Korea's main industries have grown by pioneering overseas markets that are blooming. But I don't know why domestic publishers are so stuck in the small domestic reading market that they can't even venture into overseas markets like this.

Neighboring Japan is a world-class reading power recognized by others, and China is a huge potential reading market with a population of 1.5 billion. Why can't they think of translating their publications into these neighboring countries? Apparently, there are many small publishers, and, as pointed out above, they are still clinging to translating and importing foreign literature, so they may not dare to cross the overseas market.

When I say this, many people will talk about the impossible, giving reasons such as how we are, unrealistic to our situation. But even if there are fewer than a hundred reasons, why not try it if you have one or two reasons? As a native scholar, I also think this way, but wouldn't scholars who have studied abroad for at least 5 years and at most 10 years not think this way? Maybe it's because they have deep roots in their minds that the only way to learn is to learn, translate, and interpret things from advanced countries? In today's Internet age, the dominance of English has grown even greater. If so, wouldn't it be much more advantageous to enter the overseas market if only one English version was properly published?

There are many excellent monograph research books in Korea. Isn't it necessary to train not only Korean translation but also foreign language translation experts including English, Chinese, and Japanese? This should be planned with a cultural perspective, and the government should provide extensive support for the publishing business that produces and distributes the most important knowledge in the future just as it supports SMEs. The small publishing environment that operates like a hole-in-the-wall cannot be left unattended any longer. In addition, publishers need to have a more macroscopic and enterprising perspective. jogel4u@outlook.com
