Myongji University Future Education Center Cultural Contents Department Head Professor Lee Mi-hyeong (Minhwa) will hold her first solo exhibition of folk paintings. The exhibition schedule is from September 18 to September 26, 2021. The exhibition location is Unhyeongung, 646 Samil-daero, Jongno-gu, Seoul (Subway Anguk Station Exit 4). The works on display include Morando, Chaekgado, Yeonhwado, Obongdo, Ssangyongdo, and Hojakdo folding screen, which reproduce the beauty of folk paintings.

Regarding the purpose of the solo exhibition, Professor Lee Mi-hyeong said, “The country has not gone all over the country due to the corona virus. Looking back, our ancestors always pursued ‘bright things’. Therefore, the picture drawn by the descendants must be a 'bright picture'. With that 'bright picture', I am holding a solo exhibition to give the energy of 'bright dreams' and 'bright hopes' for tomorrow to all those who are tired of Corona."

Regarding the name of folk painting, Professor Lee Mi-hyeong said, “The name folk painting was derived from the phrase ‘folk painting’ first written by Yoneshi Yanagi, a Japanese, at an exhibition of folk crafts held in Kyoto, Japan in March 1929, during the Japanese colonial rule. However, in this 'folk (people's) painting', there is 'profane'. There is a nuance of ‘profane painting’” and pointed out, “The same is true of folk characters in folk paintings. If you look up its origin, it is a character that expresses the shape of a stinger in one eyeball to prevent them from escaping first when they catch the enemy's soldiers in the old war. The square shape above the letter ‘min’ is ‘eyeball’, and the one that rises obliquely towards it is ‘saliva’. It is like saying ‘dark painting’, ‘half painting’ and ‘invisible painting’ because it was called folk painting with the character ‘minmin’ as a prefix.”

“Once upon a time, we, the Korean people, were called ‘Baedal People’. Now, it has been caricatured as a 'delivery nation' such as delivering food, but the original etymology is 'bright moon', that is, 'bright land'. ‘Asadal’, the capital of Gojoseon, also has the same meaning.” He said, “Now you know why I expressed folktales with bright paintings, right? Even for a short exhibition period, to find our identity. However, if I do this, the name 'Minhwa' will be changed somewhere. There is a saying that deterioration builds up good, right? That’s how it has become.”

Professor Lee Mi-hyeong said, "Isn't it funny that paintings that came from the West while using the name of these folktales are called 'famous paintings' and 'Seonghwa'.

Prof. Lee Mi-hyeong, who was behind the Irojang in Unhyeongung Palace during the opening of his personal exhibition, said that he would look back on the past history, touching the traces of the old pine, which is said to have been frequently climbed by King Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty, when he was a boy.
