The National Assembly's Planning and Finance Committee, Rep. Kyeong-ho Chu (Dalseong-gun, Daegu) proposed the Semiconductor Investment Support Act (Tax Exemption Restriction Act), which provides a tax credit for 50% of the investment cost when investing in semiconductors.

Currently, Korea provides a 25% (maximum 2%) tax credit for research and development (R&D) expenses, and up to 40% (30% for large companies) tax credit for new growth and original technology research and development (R&D) that require intensive support. Are supporting.

In the case of facility investment, a tax credit of 1% for large corporations, 3% for mid-sized companies, and 10% for small and medium-sized enterprises is supported as a basic deduction, and an additional 3% is deducted when the investment increases compared to the average investment amount for the previous three years.

Among them, as major advanced countries such as the United States, China, and the European Union struggled to preoccupy the semiconductor market enough to be called the'semiconductor war', Rep. Gyeong-ho Chu argued that Korea also needed active semiconductor-related support, and proposed the bill as a representative .

If this law is passed, 50% of the cost of semiconductor-related R&D and facility investment can be deducted from income tax or corporate tax, and 50% of the investment cost will not be deducted altogether due to the minimum tax rate of corporate tax. If it is not possible, it can be carried over for up to 10 years to receive the deduction.

Meanwhile, in the case of the United States, up to 20% of R&D expenses exceeding a certain standard amount are deducted from the tax credit of up to 20%. ACT)' is about to pass through Congress.

In China, it is reported that a semiconductor manufacturing company that has been in business for more than 15 years will reduce corporate tax for 10 years when applying a state-of-the-art process (28mm or less process), and the EU plans to support up to 40% of the company's semiconductor investment.

Rep. Gyeong-ho Choo said, “As the semiconductor-related latecomers are accelerating, and the semiconductor market is growing with the development of artificial intelligence and IoT, competition at the national level is intensifying.” “Korea is also actively seeking to strengthen the international competitiveness of semiconductor companies. We have to apply for it,” he stressed.
