임성재(22·CJ대한통운)가 84년 역사의 마스터즈 토너먼트에서 쾌거를 이뤘다.
임성재는 16일(한국시간) 미국 조지아주 오거스타의 오거스타 내셔널 골프클럽(파72·7475야드)에서 열린 제 84회 마스터즈 최종 라운드에서 3타를 줄인 합계 69타 15언더파로 호주의 캐머런 스미스와 함께 공동 2위를 기록했다.
임성재의 2020 마스터즈 최종라운드에서 공동 2위는 2004년 최경주가 거둔 3위 이후 한국을 포함한 아시아 골퍼의 마스터즈 역대 최고 성적을 갈아 치운 것.
임성재는 올해 처음으로 마스터즈에 출전했지만 저스틴 토마스, 로이 맥길로이, 브룩스 캡카 등 세계 최고 수준의 선수들을 압도하는 플레이를 선보이며 우승경쟁에 뛰어들었다. 3라운드까지 12언더파로 공동 2위를 달리며 마지막날 경기를 한국인 최초로 챔피언조에서 치르는 기록도 남겼다.
임성재는 이번 대회 준우승으로 자신의 메이저대회 최고 성적도 경신했다. 이전까지는 지난 9월 US오픈에서의 22위가 최고 성적이었다.
이 대회 우승은 20언더파를 기록한 미국의 더스틴 존슨이 차지했고 호주의 캐머런 스미스가 임성재와 함께 공동 2위에 올랐다.
더스틴 존슨은 2016년 US오픈에 이어 자신의 통산 두번째 메이저 우승컵을 거머쥐었다. 존슨은 지난해 마스터즈에서는 2위에 머물렀다.
이밖에 저스틴 토마스(미국)가 4위, 로리 맥킬로이(북아일랜드)가 5위, 욘 람(스페인)과 브룩스 캡카(미국)이 공동 7위를 기록했다.
지난해 우승자로 관심을 모았던 타이거 우즈(미국)는 공동 38위에 그쳤다.
임성재와 함께 마스터즈에 도전한 강성훈은 3언더파 공동 29위, 김시우는 이븐파 공동 34위로 대회를 마쳤다.

In the final round of the 84th Masters held at Augusta National Golf Club (par 72, 7,475 yards) in Augusta, Georgia on the 16th (Korea time), Im Sung-jae tied for second with Cameron Smith of Australia, who reduced three strokes to 69 strokes and 15 under par.
Im Sung-jae's joint second place in the final round of the 2020 Masters is the best-ever performance by Asian golfers, including Korea, since Choi Kyung-ju finished third in 2004.
Im played in the Masters for the first time this year, but jumped into the championship competition with plays that overwhelmed world-class players such as Justin Thomas, Roy McGilloy and Brooks Capka. He tied for second at 12-under until the third round, setting a record of being the first Korean to play in the championship group on the last day.
Im Sung-jae also broke his major's best record with the runner- Previously, the 22nd place at the U.S. Open last September was the best.
The tournament title was won by Dustin Johnson of the U.S., who was 20 under par, and Cameron Smith of Australia tied for second with Im.
Dustin Johnson won his second major championship after the 2016 U.S. Open. Johnson finished second in last year's Masters.
Justin Thomas of the U.S. came in fourth, Rory McKilli of Northern Ireland came in fifth, and Jon Lam of Spain and Brooks Capka of the U.S. tied for seventh.
Tiger Woods, who drew attention as the winner last year, tied for 38th.
Kang Sung-hoon, who challenged the Masters with Lim Sung-jae, finished tied for 29th at 3-under par and Kim Si-woo tied for 34th at even par.
