브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 길리어드사이언스사의 렘데시비르가 미국 식품의약국(FDA)의 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 치료제 승인을 받았다.
길리어드사이언스는 22일(현지시간) 보도자료를 통해 "미 FDA가 항바이러스 약물 렘데시비르를 코로나19로 입원 치료를 받는 환자에 대한 치료제로 승인했다"라고 밝혔다.
길리어드사이언스 수석의학책임자 멀대드 퍼시는 "이 약물은 코로나19로 입원 치료를 받는 환자가 더 빨리 회복하게 돕는 것으로 증명된 첫 항바이러스 약물"이라며 "내부 제조 역량을 늘리고 외부 제조망을 확대해 다음 주부터 전 세계적으로 임상상 적절한 환자 치료에 약물이 충분히 공급될 수 있게 할 것"이라고 설명했다.
렘데시비르는 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 코로나19에 감염돼 월터 리드 국립 군 병원 입원 기간 투약했던 약으로 익히 알려져 있다. 트럼프 대통령은 렘데시비르 외에도 덱사메타손, 리제네론 항체 치료제 등을 투약한 것으로 알려져 있다.
렘데시비르는 주로 코로나19로 입원 치료가 필요한 성인과 12세 이상 환자(몸무게 최소 40㎏)를 상대로 사용하기 적합한 것으로 알려져 있다. 과민성 반응 환자 등엔 사용이 금지되며, 투약 후 발열과 혈압 변화, 빈맥 등 증상이 나타날 수 있다.
앞서 FDA는 지난 5월 코로나19 치료제로 렘데시비르 긴급 사용을 승인한 바 있다. 다만 앞서 세계보건기구(WHO)는 렘데시비르가 중환자 입원 기간을 줄이거나 사망률을 낮추는 데 효과를 보이지 않았다고 밝히기도 했다.
