어네스터 헤밍웨이의 소설제목 하나를 소환한다. “누구를 위하여 종은 울리나?”[For Whom the Bell Tolls] 100년 역사의 조선일보를 향한 질문이다. 거두절미하고, 갑자기 쇼 하나 하려고 100년의 역사와 전통의 영혼마저 잊어버리는 것인가? 묻고 싶다. 시청자의 눈에는 그렇게 보인다. ‘매경이코노미’의 전신인 ‘주간매경’의 요청으로 권두칼럼을 쓰던 2005년도에 조선일보에도 강력한 칼럼을 몇 번 썼고 감사하다는 인사도 받았던 인연으로 갖게 된 조선일보에 대한 애정에서다.

지난번 글에서 나는 전염병 팬데믹으로 감당하기 힘든 어려운 시기에 TV조선이 기획해 성공시킨 트롯열풍으로 지친 국민들이 위로 받는 것 같아 다행이고 고맙다고 했다. 그러나 곧이어 행한 ‘트롯 어워즈’는 자신들 보다 훨씬 현명하고 이지적인 수많은 구독자와 시청자를 실망시킨 것 같다. 아닌가? 결론부터 말하면 그 과정이 불공정한 투표가 아닐까? 정의란 이미 갑골문자가 되어버린 지 오래고 그래도 마지노선인 최소한의 공정함은 놓치지 말아야 할 시대가 아닌가?

그런 조선일보나 TV 조선에서 이제 어느 누가 나와서 공정을 얘기하고 상대방의 불공정을 지적한들 국민들이 신뢰 할 수 있을까? 언론사가 아무리 일시적으로 광고가 많이 붙어도 본연의 정신이 죽었다면 이미 죽은 것이라는 생각은 나만의 구닥다리사고일까? 세상이 아무리 시끄럽고 주변강국들의 탐욕으로 위태로워도, 수백만원짜리 양복이 아니라 줄곧 변하지 않고 몇 십만 원 가격의 중저가 기성복 양복을 입는 대통령이면......등이 신뢰의 표본이 되는 민심이라면아마 너무 깊이 상처 받은 그 전의 피해의식 때문일 것이다. 재보선이고 대선 주자가 없어도 무슨 상관인가? 눈이 번쩍 띄는 새 인물이 하늘에서 떨어지지 않는다면 바꿔 봤자 이전의 그들이 한 일들이 아직도 눈에 선한데...

1등도 못한 그깟 쇼 한번 하기 위해 이토록 민족적으로 국가적으로 중요한 시기에 그간의 전통과 명예와 국민들의 신뢰를 스스로 그렇게 짓밟으며 그토록 적나라하게 자기부정을 해야 하는 것일까? 언론 본연의 정신과 영혼을 팽개치고 쇼에만 집중하기에는 조선일보의 면면히 이어온 100년 역사가 너무 무겁고 아까운 것 아닐까?
