브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 금태섭 전 의원이 21일 "더 이상은 당이 나아가는 방향을 승인하고 동의할 수 없는 지경에 이르렀다"면서 더불어민주당 탈당을 선언했다.
금 전 의원은 조국 전 법무부 장관 사태 때 조 전 장관을 공개 비판해 당 열성 지지층으로부터 표적이 됐다. 지난해 말에는 고위공직자범죄수사처(공수처)법 표결 때 기권표를 던져 '주의 처분'의 징계를 받기도 했다.
금 전 의원은 이날 페이스북에 올린 '민주당을 떠나며'라는 제목의 글을 통해 이같이 말하며 "그래서 마지막 항의의 뜻으로 충정과 진심을 담아 탈당계를 낸다"며 이같이 말했다.
그는 "공수처 당론에 따르지 않았다는 이유로 징계처분을 받고 재심을 청구한 지 5개월이 지났다. 당 지도부가 바뀐 지도 두 달이 지났다. 그간 윤리위 회의도 여러 차례 열렸다"며 "하지만 민주당은 아무런 결정도 내리지 않고 책임을 회피하고 있다"고 지적했다.
이어 그는 "'징계 재심 뭉개기'가 탈당 이유의 전부는 아니다"라며 "민주당은 예전의 유연함과 겸손함, 소통의 문화를 찾아 볼 수 없을 정도로 변했다. 국민들을 상대로 형사고소와 민사소송을 서슴지 않는 것은 김대중이 이끌던 민주당, 노무현이 이끌던 민주당에서는 상상하기 힘든 모습"이라고 비판했다.
그는 "다른 무엇보다 편 가르기로 국민들을 대립시키고 생각이 다른 사람을 범법자, 친일파로 몰아붙이며 윽박지르는 오만한 태도가 가장 큰 문제"라며 "거기에서부터 우리 편에 대해서는 한없이 관대하고 상대방에게는 가혹한 '내로남불', 이전에 했던 주장을 아무런 해명이나 설명 없이 뻔뻔스럽게 바꾸는 ‘말 뒤집기’의 행태가 나타난다"고 꼬집었다.
한편, 여당 내에서도 그의 탈당을 놓고 다양한 의견이 개진되고 있다. 당 지도부는 아쉽다는 반응을 보이면서도 개인적 행보로 의미를 축소하는 모습이다. 당내 일각에선 '철새 정치인'이라며 금 전 의원의 조롱하는 반응이 나오는 것도 사실이다.
이낙연 대표는 이날 오전 국회에서 열린 민주당 최고위원회의 뒤 기자들과 만난 자리에서 금 전 의원의 탈당 선언에 대한 입장을 묻는 질문에 "아쉬운 일"이라며 말을 아꼈다.
금 전 의원이 자신의 징계처분에 대한 당의 재심 지연에 문제를 제기한 데 대해서는 "충고는 저희들이 마음으로 받아들이겠다"면서도 "그러나 일단 떠나신 것을 아쉽게 생각한다"고 했다.
허영 대변인도 국회에서 열린 당정 경제상황 점검회의 후 기자들과 만난 자리에서 "자연인으로서의 탈당이기 때문에 거기에 큰 의미가 있을는지는 잘 모르겠다"고 말했다.
반면 정청래 더불어민주당 의원은 이날 자신의 페이스북에 "다음 총선을 생각하면 국민의힘이 더 땡기겠지만 그래도 한때 한솥밥을 먹었던 철수형이 외롭다. 이럴 때 힘 보태주는 것"이라며 "안타깝지만 본인을 위해서나 민주당을 위해서나 잘 된 일이다. 정치인은 다음 세대를 걱정하고 정치꾼은 다음 선거를 걱정한다. 아무튼 건투를 빈다"고 적었다.
금 전 의원은 지난 2012년 안철수 대선후보 캠프에서 상황실장을 맡은 바 있다. 새정치추진위원회 시절엔 대변인 역할을 하는 등 안 대표의 최측근으로 분류됐다. 그러나 안 대표가 민주당과 합당한 후 2014년 재보궐선거 과정에서 대변인직을 사퇴하며 사실상 안 대표와 결별했다. 금 전 의원은 당시 안 대표가 민주당을 탈당한 이후로도 민주당 당적을 유지했다.
지난 21대 총선에서 금 전 의원의 지역구인 서울 강서갑에 공천을 신청했다가 당 지도부의 조정으로 경기 안산단원을 공천을 받아 당선된 김남국 의원도 페이스북에서 "이제 여기서는 안 될 것 같으니까 이런저런 핑계를 대면서 자신이 속했던 정당을 떠난다. 그냥 떠나는 것도 내가 못 먹는 우물 남도 먹지 말라는 못된 마음으로 침을 뱉고 떠난다"며 "최근에 보기 힘든 '철새 정치인'의 모습"이라고 비난했다.
그는 금 전 의원의 탈당 이유에 대해 "빨리 탈당해서 '국민의힘'에 입당해 내년 서울시장 재보궐 선거나 지역구 재보궐을 준비하려는 계획과, 민주당에서 한 번 더 국회의원 하기는 쉽지 않을 것 같으니 그럼 하루라도 빨리 다른 당으로 가서 자리를 잡자는 조급함 때문"이라고 주장하기도 했다.
