JTBC는 당시 상황이 녹취된 음성 파일을 공개하며 해당 내용을 자세히 보도했다. 이에 따르면 지난해 12월 16일, 호카 국내 총판을 운영하는 조모 대표가 경쟁업체 관계자들을 “식사하며 대화를 나누자”며 서울 성수동 철거 예정인 폐교회 건물 3층으로 불렀다. 참석자들은 장소가 폐건물임을 확인한 뒤 불안한 마음에 휴대전화 녹음 기능을 켰다고 한다.
