윤석열 대통령이 출범을 앞둔 대통령 직속 국방혁신위원회 부위원장급 위원에 김관진 전 국방장관(74)을 내정한 것으로 10일 알려졌다.
대통령실에 의하면 이르면 오는 11일 국방혁신위 첫 회의가 열리는 가운데 이날 김 전 장관 등을 위원에 위촉할 예정이다.
이번에 신설된 국방혁신위는 윤 대통령을 위원장으로 국가안보실장·국방장관이 정부 당연직 위원인 가운데 민간 예비역 장성 4명과 인공지능(AI)·빅데이터·사이버보안 과학기술전문가 등 8명이 위원으로 참여해 국방 혁신 계획 수립·정책 조율 등을 담당한다.
국방혁신위는 국정과제인 '과학기술 강군' 추진을 목표로 하는 가운데 국방혁신기본계획 심의·조정 역할을 한다.
김 전 장관은 지난 이명박·박근혜 정부에서 국방장관 및 청와대 국가안보실장 등을 지낸 인사로 도발 원점 타격·선조치 후보고·적 지휘부 공격 등 3대 응징방침을 평시 훈련에 시행하는 등 대북 강경 대응 기조를 견지해 북한이 두려워했던 것으로 알려졌다.
