서정으로 가득한 승화된 감성의 작품으로 많은 사랑을 받는 신철 화가의 초대 개인전이 3월 15일부터 20일까지 서울 인사아트프라자 1층에서 열린다.
(그 봄-That Spring) 전시에 담긴 의미는 많은 변화를 바라보는 세상에서 생명의 숨결처럼 고운 꽃 피우며 어김없이 찾아오는 봄날의 신성함을 품은 작가의 내면이다.
신철 작가의 작품은 극히 단순한 형태로 그려진 인물이 중심이 되어 감정을 눌러 삼킨 절제된 표정 속에 훼손되지 않은 순수한 감성들을 품고 있다. 이는 미학적 관점에서 어느 시대에서나 그림 속의 인물은 역사와 문화를 나타내는 대상이다.

작가의 작품은 시대의 아픔과 세상의 통증을 증류수와 같은 신성한 순수와 소박한 서정으로 어루만지고 있다. 이는 작가의 주요한 연작 시리즈 ‘기억 풀이’ 작품에서 쉽게 헤아려진다. 남도 외딴섬 청산도에서 어린 시절을 보낸 작가의 기억에 아롱진 아련한 아름다움에 대한 애틋한 그리움이 녹아있다. 이는 세상에서 느껴지는 통증에 대한 치유를 의미한다.
필자는 신철 작가의 작품을 대할 때마다 생각나는 음악이 있다. 클래식 음악에서 가사 없이 콧소리(허밍) 또는, 모음으로 발성하는 성악 연습곡을 보칼리제(Vocalise)라고 한다. 그중 러시아에서 태어나 미국으로 이주한 낭만파 음악가 세르게이 라흐마니노프(1873~1943)의 가곡 ‘보칼리제’는 깊은 애수와 애틋한 서정이 절절한 음악이다.
라흐마니노프는 1912년 13곡의 성악곡 작곡에 이어 2년 후인 1915년 독창과 피아노 음악으로 보칼리제를 작곡하였다. 중요한 사실은 13곡에는 모두 가사가 있었지만, 14번째 가곡 보칼리제는 가사가 없는 특별한 음악이었다.
오직 멜로디로 구성된 보칼리제는 잔잔하고 아름다운 선율 속에 애수의 서정이 출렁대는 음악이다. 감상자의 마음에 가사를 맡긴 듯한 보칼리제는 감성적인 첼로와 바이올린에 이르는 현악기 편곡으로도 잘 알려졌다.
가사가 없는 특별한 성악곡 보칼리제는 가사의 긴밀한 연관과 상호작용에서 생성되는 감성을 멜로디로 전달하는 시적인 특성이 두드러진다. 섬세한 감성의 리듬을 품은 연속적인 멜로디 라인에 시와 같은 응축된 감성의 화성과 높은 음역의 화음이 어우러진 하모니는 심오한 감정을 전달하는 예술적 표현의 절창이다. 라흐마니노프에 대하여 예술적 기교가 탁월한 비르투오소(virtuoso)로 평가하는 이유이기도 하다.

필자가 신철 화가의 작품을 라흐마니노프의 가사가 없는 특별한 성악곡 보칼리제로 헤아리는 이유는 작가의 작품이 극히 함축된 시적 표현으로 이루어지는 특성을 중시한 것이다.
작가의 내면적 의식과 감성이 고스란히 표현되는 인물 중심의 작품에서 승화된 예술성은 감정을 나타내는 표정의 시적 표현에서 가능하다. 절제된 표정 속에 가슴으로 써 내려간 시를 헤아릴 때 작가의 작품은 더욱더 맑은 눈을 뜬다. artwww@naver.com

Rachmaninoff composed 13 vocal compositions in 1912 and two years later, in 1915, he composed bokalise with solo and piano music. The important fact is that all 13 songs had lyrics, but the 14th song bocalize was a special music without lyrics.
The bocalize, which consists only of melodies, is a music where sorrowful lyricism flutters in a calm and beautiful melody. Vocalize, which seems to have left the lyrics to the viewer's mind, is also well known for its string arrangements ranging from emotional cello and violin.
The special vocal music bocalize without lyrics stands out for its poetic characteristics that convey the emotions generated by the close connection and interaction of lyrics into melodies. Harmony, which combines a continuous melody line with a rhythm of delicate emotions with a harmony of condensed emotions such as poetry and high-pitched chords, is a masterpiece of artistic expression that conveys profound emotions. This is also why Rachmaninoff is evaluated as a virtuoso with excellent artistic skills.
