[Book Review] ‘Historical prayer written with Fr. Ham, Sei ung’s brush’Writing history with the brush of spirituality!

“Priest Se-Woong Ham is Korea’s ISIAH who proclaimed and practiced God’s righteousness”

-Cho Han-gyu, former journalist

I. Fr. Ham, Sei ung’s Spiritual Theology

“An atheist staring through his window is closer to God than a believer caught in a false self-made image of God,” said Martin Buber, author of Me and Thou. It is a criticism of whitewashed Christians who are living a life that is far from the essence of faith because they are too obsessed with the image of God and the literal Bible.

In the 1980s, when I read this passage, I was reminded of one of the four phrases of the Diamond Sutra, “The Buddha of the Diamond Sutra,” “The Buddha of the Diamond Sutra,” “The Buddha of the Diamond Sutra.” It means that all things with forms are false, so if you know that all forms are not original forms, you will soon see the true form.

However, I recently read a new book titled “Historical Prayers with the Brush of Ham Se-ung” (hereafter referred to as “historical prayers”) by Father Ham Se-woong (咸世雄, Augustine), a senior Korean Catholic priest, and received a fresh shock. It is because he gained a realization about the existence of God beyond Buber's scolding or the 4th verse of the Diamond Sutra. It was the realization that God is with human beings who suffer in the history of suffering. In short, it means that God is present in the history of suffering. Therefore, God is bound to be far from ‘image’ or ‘image’. It is ‘So So-Young Young (昭昭靈靈: bright, bright, mysterious, and mysterious)’ itself.

The ‘Historical Prayer’ shows how Father Ham met God and how he synthesized the theological system from a practical point of view. The epitome of that song is the ‘spirituality of prison’.

“The events of the Old Testament are all interpreted and synthesized from the perspective of Jesus’ death on the cross, suffering, and resurrection. This is the heart of Christian theology. We call this principle spirituality...(Omitted)...Spirituality is itself born and grows in the world, history, and daily life. This is a creative spirituality based on the Word of God and historical reality, a spirituality of compassion and mercy, unity and solidarity, coexistence and coexistence, and empathy (p. 371)”

Father Ham's 'Theory of Spirituality' is systematically well organized to the extent that it cannot be found in any theology or religious philosophy books. It is a record of the 'spirituality of prison' that he experienced existentially in prison amid hardships. The development of spirituality leading to ‘emptiness martyrdom transcendence’ did not just come out of nowhere. It is a language that can never be vomited without an experience that penetrates the whole body. In fact, in July 1977, Father Ham cried out and prayed, “God, where are you now?” in Gongju Prison. And he is said to have heard the voice of God.

“Approaching God is the first step in spirituality. All human shame, suffering and pain contain a purifying element in their own way. Crucially, death is the gateway to that sanctuary, and prison is the threshold of death. This is why I call life in prison 'the spirituality of prison'...(omitted)...the freedom of the naked, the freedom of the imprisoned, that is poverty and emptiness, lowering and descent (下降) through the process of being taken away. ) is the spirituality...(omitted)...the freedom to make decisions that risk one's life, that is the spirituality of emptiness, the spirituality of martyrdom, the spirituality of transcendence, and the spirituality of prison. (p. 373)”

Prayer liturgy social commitment his cry that the source of spirituality is the place where Jesus was executed makes our eyes open. ah! Golgotha! The most impressive contents of Father Ham’s ‘Spiritual Theory’ are as follows.

“The paradox that prison is the place where we can enjoy the greatest freedom even though we are physically locked up gives us a great realization. In fact, I was spiritually reborn in prison. Along with meditating on the Bible, I was able to synthesize the entire theoretical theology I learned at the seminary from a practical point of view. Sanctuaries are not just grand and wonderful churches and cathedral buildings. A sanctuary is a place where you can take off your skin and pretense and attend God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in your heart. The source of prayer, liturgy, social commitment and spirituality is the hill of Golgotha, the site of Jesus' death on the cross. Prison is the place that solemnly reproduces the place of execution. (page 379)”

The keyword of the ‘spiritual theory’ that Father Ham insisted on is ‘purification’. It's like 'emptying'. It is said that the spirituality that is originally within me is expressed only when I cleanse and empty my body and mind. he says “Spirituality is the posture of standing naked before God. Gongsulae Gongsugeo is that declaration.” So, the prison, where everything can be emptied and put down, was called the ‘training center for purification’, ‘refining center for faith’, and ‘training center for self-discovery’. Martyrdom is possible at the peak of purification, and transcendence is also possible at the peak of purification. This is where spirituality of compassion and mercy, unity and solidarity, coexistence and symbiosis, and empathy are possible. Resurrection also takes place here.

II. The structure of the ‘historical prayer’

The ‘historical prayer’ is truly a prayer. At the beginning of each part, a Bible verse is quoted. In the case of the ‘Joseon National Preparatory Committee’, “If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath, let’s fight whoever he is. That way, we will not all die like our compatriots who died in the shelter. <Maccabees 2:41-28>” begins. Then, a sermon explaining the anecdotes of history with theological insights is given, and the prayer concludes with a prayer, “Forebears, please urge us all to unite the peoples of the South and the North, Amen!” The last prayer of the ‘historical prayer’ is huge. “May the whole world and the whole universe be completely renewed with the wind, the sea, and the clean air. All this in the Holy Spirit through Christ our Lord. amen!"

‘Prayer of History’ consists of a total of 52 parts, from ‘1. Witnessing the times with crying letters’ to ‘52. Olive Haessun’. After liberation on August 15, 1945, the historical prayer begins with the ‘Joseon Founding Preparation Committee’. And 'MacArthur Proclamation', 'Dokdo and the Peace Line', '43 Jeju Uprising'...'Park Jae-pyo's Honesty and Courage', 'Repay Students' Blood', '419 Phoenix'...5 16 Military Rebellion...'We are not machines'...Buma Uprising...1026 Revolution...518 People's Uprising...June Uprising...41,'Abolition of the National Security Law' Until now, it has dealt with the refraction and transformation of modern history.

Father Ham introduced the “History of Purification,” in which he shed bloody tears and expressed the pain and resentment of the people at various historical sites that he personally experienced. Looking at the title, it seems like modern history that everyone knows, but it is not. A surprising and new historical secret is revealed. Such are the evaluation of Mongyang Yeo Woon-hyung, the reality of MacArthur's decree, and the story of the young policeman who exposed the Jeongeup Hwanpyo case. Poet Kim Soo-young’s poem “First, take off his picture and use it as a base wash”, “Ah, hurry up and say goodbye to the rotten yesterday” was said to resemble “repentance” in the Bible. Regarding poet Shin Dong-yeop’s representative poem ‘Go away from the shell’, it was evaluated that it has a ‘theological resonance that goes beyond resistance’. Father Ham’s insight, “The language of emptiness and restraint is poetry,” was sharp. Go shell!

The most heartbreaking events are the brave self-immolation, self-determination, torture death, tear gas shot, and self-immolation of martyr Jeon Tae-il, Kim Sang-jin, Park Jong-cheol, Lee Han-yeol, and Jo Seong-man, who shook history. Among them, I did not know in detail about the dedication of the martyr Cho Seong-man. On May 15, 1988, at 3:40 pm, I learned through the ‘Prayer of History’ that Martyr Cho Seong-man had committed suicide from the roof of the Myeongdong Cathedral Education Center, and I felt infinite guilt and shame. The will that began with, “A man who was born on the Korean peninsula, a barren land, and wanted to love mankind, wishes for the reunification of his country is posting this.” Father Ham's analysis is that the dedication of Martyr Cho Seong-man, who was a student at the Department of Chemistry at Seoul National University, led to Pastor Ik-hwan Moon's visit to North Korea and ignited the issue of unification. ah! Fourteen Jo Sung Man!

And from 42. 'Spirituality in Prison' to 52. 'Olive Sunshine', Father Ham's confession of faith and theological reflection were dealt with. Father Ham graduated from the Department of Theology at The Catholic University of Korea in 1960, and after completing his military service, he received a Master of Theology from the Pontifical Urbano University and a Doctor of Theology from the Gregorian University. After serving as an assistant priest at Yeonhui-dong Catholic Church for a while, he served as a professor of theology at the Catholic University of Korea from 1974 to 1992. He was both a priest and a theologian.

As a theologian, Father Ham's theological keywords are 'secret' and 'spirituality'. ‘Humbling and emptying’ form the framework of theology, and spirituality forms the flesh. For example, mentioning ‘Let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord’ (Isaiah 2), he emphasizes that we must climb the lowest and deepest mountain of conscience. he says “The lowest attitude is the total surrender of everything to God, the humbly acceptance of the will of God. It is a secret expression (卑虛Kenosiskenosis) that expresses the lowliness and emptying like Jesus, that is, the death of the cross to an extreme. Conscience, as another name for wisdom, is the word of God, and it is believed that the beginning of peace begins here. So he emphasized that the invitation to ‘go up the mountain of the Lord’ is a prayer of peace and an appeal for peace. That is what it means to walk in the light of God. Therefore, Father Ham Se-ung's theology is a theology of peace and a theology of light.

Even so, his theology is in line with the Minjung theology of Korea. This is how I responded to Ahn Byung-moo, former professor at Hanshin University, who argued that “the Jesus movement was not a personal biographical event, but a popular event,” and former Yonsei University professor Seo Nam-dong, who said, “The era of the Holy Spirit is the era of the people.”

“Jesus himself, as the son of a carpenter, was a laborer who lived the lives of the people of his day. Jesus was a liberator who reached out to the poor, the sick, the marginalized, and women (p. 188).”

“God's greater will is confirmed when pious acts in the cathedral lead to the liberation of the people in the world. That is the service and liberation task of the church to purify and save the world in the midst of the world (p. 394).”

In particular, the fact that Father Ham's theology is not narrow-minded and appeals to the universal sentiment of our people deserves high praise. On the premise that 'the Bible is a collaboration between God and man', he sought a connection with Korean thought. It's embarrassing to say it in itself.

“Conscience is the sanctuary where God dwells. Our ancestors put their hands on their hearts and were convinced that God was right there. It is possible to declare that I am God because God is in me. It is the basis of the idea of In-In-Cheon (人乃天), which says that if you look closely at people, you can see God. However, there is a premise. That person must be awake. He must be prepared. It should be clear. You have to rise to the top. For this, you need to practice asceticism. As much as I tried, as much as I focused, as much as I forsook myself, God approaches me. (page 414)”

III. Fr. Ham, Sei ung’s nerve brushing method

From October 28 to November 3, 2020, 51 calligraphic works by Father Ham Se-woong were exhibited at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul. At the time, I was ‘哀号已達于我前(Aehoi Dal Wooajeon)’. “The sound of the cries of (the children of Israel) reached me” (Exodus 3:9). After looking at 51 works, I wrote in my column that his writing style was ‘patience. It was because I could feel the breath of God, and each stroke contained spirituality.

By the way, Dr. Lee Dong-chun, in his recommendation for this 'Historical Prayer', evaluated that he had "rehearsed the 'Shinkyung pilbeop' and captured spirituality at the tip of the brush."

Father Ham’s “Prayer of History” contains 52 calligraphic works. These works are much more mature than they were in 2020. It seems to have reached a level now. In Korea, there will be no one to compete with except for Dr. Lee Dong-cheon. Even though it is an 81-year-old handwriting, spirituality blooms like a haze. In a word, the ‘patience-cheon brush method’ was completed.

I am not a Christian. However, when he was in college, he read the Bible often. He enjoyed reading the historical accounts of the Old Testament. The stories of the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah were impressive. As I was looking at Father Ham's calligraphy work, I suddenly thought that he might be the reincarnation of the prophet Isaiah.

Ham also quoted Isaiah from the Old Testament six times in the opening verses of each part. He is the most quoted after Matthew. Isaiah confronted the unbelief and stubbornness of men and the stubbornness of the people of Judah. In a word, it was optimistic and hot. Similar to Father Ham. Ham's cry echoes like Isaiah's.

“Cutting out the root of historical sin, that is historical prayer and national reflection (p. 151)” “Historical prayer is a prayer that establishes the values and justice of the community. It is a hang-up to do and practice. (page 472)”

In Chapter 45 of the Tao Te Ching, Lao-tzu said, “Pure and clean, under heaven and below.” It means “clearness and tranquility straighten the world.” Father Ham Se-woong has a clear and serene spirituality. In fact, “the person must be awake. He must be prepared. He must be clear. He must rise to the ground. For this, you need to practice asceticism. As much as I tried, as much as I focused, as much as I forsook myself, God approaches me” is also his own story. In 1974, Father Ham simply established the Catholic Priests' Association for the Realization of Justice. His clearness and tranquility set Korean history right. Priest Se-woong Ham is Korea's ISAIAH who proclaimed and practiced God's righteousness. hangyucho@kcmf.or.kr
