‘5·18 Democratization Movement’ deleted “Regression in history and regression in democracy must be corrected…”

Joint press conference held by 58 opposition lawmakers, including the Democratic Party, Justice Party, and Basic Income Party

On the morning of the 4th (Wednesday), Rep. Kang Deuk-gu (Democratic Party of Korea, Anyang Manan), member of the National Assembly Education Committee, and member Kang Min-jeong, Kang Eun-mi, Kim Gyeong-man, Kim Min-seok, Kim Young-ho, Kim Hong-geol, and Seo Young-seok held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Building and said, “2022 revised social studies curriculum He insisted that the '5·18 Democratization Movement', which had disappeared from the curriculum, should be corrected.”

On December 22, the Ministry of Education confirmed and announced the 2022 revised elementary and secondary school and special education curriculum. However, in the entire curriculum of the 2022 revised curriculum, elementary, middle, and high schools, the ‘5 18 Democratization Movement’ was deleted entirely.

Although it is natural that the Korean curriculum and textbooks describe the establishment of the Korean government, the 4/19 Revolution, the 5/18 Democratization Movement, and the June Democratic Uprising, only the '5 18 Democratization Movement' is included in the elementary, middle, and high school social studies curriculum. not included anywhere

In the 2022 revised middle school social studies curriculum achievement standard, it is only stated that ‘the process of democracy development is examined through domestic and foreign cases’, and only the April 19 Revolution and the June Democratic Uprising are specified in the considerations when applying the achievement standard. In addition, what was presented in the past in the 'achievement standard' was specified in the lower 'considerations when applying the achievement standard'. The 2022 revised social studies curriculum currently announced by the Ministry of Education is a serious step back even when compared to the 2015 revision.

Currently, not only the education community, but also Gwangju and Honam civil society are expressing concern that the history study of the development of democracy led by Korean citizens has been reduced and regressed. Furthermore, voices are being raised that the possibility that the 5·18 Democratization Movement will be excluded from textbook descriptions is high.

Kang Deuk-gu “The 5.18 Democratization Movement is a symbol of Asian democracy, an important event to explore the process of democratization in Korea, and the curriculum… It seems that the Ministry of Education intentionally reduced or omitted it.”

In response, Rep. Kang Deuk-gu mentioned that President Seok-yeol Yoon attended the 2022 May 18 Democratization Movement commemoration ceremony with all members of the People’s Power National Assembly, and said, “At the time, President Seok-yeol Yoon and Members of the People’s Power sang’March for Beloved’,’ “May 18 is the spirit of May that was preserved with blood and the cornerstone of national unity,” he said.

Rep. Kang said, “The 5.18 Democratization Movement is already a symbol of Asian democracy and an important historical event and curriculum to explore the democratization process in Korea. The fact that the May 18 Democratization Movement, which had been explicitly included in the course achievement standards, was deleted from the 2022 revised curriculum is a regression in history and a regression in education.”

Meanwhile, the joint names of the press conference were Kang Deuk-goo, Kang Min-jeong, Kang Eun-mi, Kang Jun-hyun, Kwon Chil-seung, Kim Gyeong-man, Kim Doo-gwan, Kim Min-seok, Kim Min-cheol, Kim Byung-wook, Kim Sang-hee, Kim Soo-heung, Kim Seung-won, Kim Jong-min, Kim Young-bae, Kim Young-ju, Kim Young-ho, Kim Cheol-min, Kim Hong-geol, Kim Hoe-jae, Do Jong-hwan, Ryu Ho-jeong, Moon Jeong-bok, Min Byung-deok, Min Hyung-bae, Park Kwang-on, Park Joo-min, Park Chan-dae, Bae Jin-gyo, Seo Dong-yong, Seo Young-seok, Song Gap-seok, Shin Dong-geun, Shin Jung-hoon, Yong Hye-in, Ahn Min-seok, Ahn Ho-yeong, Yu Ki-hong, Yoon Young-deok, Lee Byeong-hun, Lee Seong-man, Lee Yong-bin, Lee Soo-jin (B), Lee Jung-moon, A total of 58 lawmakers were present: Lee Jae-jeong, Lee Tan-hee, Lee Hak-young, Lee Hae-sik, Lim Oh-kyung, Jeon Jae-soo, Jung Chun-suk, Jo Oh-seop, Joo Cheol-hyeon, Jin Seong-jun, Choi Kang-wook, Han Byung-do, Han Jun-ho, and Heo Jong-shik. hpf21@naver.com
