베이징대의 동남문 맞은편에 있는 베이징 대학의 중관신위앤(中關新園)이 있다. 영어로는 글로벌 빌리지(Global Village)라고 쓰니 '지구촌'인 셈이다. 모두 9동의 숙소가 모여 있는 독립 마을이다.
이곳에는 세계 각국에서 온 다양한 인종과 민족이 한데 어우러져 살아가는 글로벌 라이프가 있다. 공용어는 어쩔 수 없이 영어를 쓰지만 중국어는 물론 프랑스어와 한국어, 러시아어, 아프리카 언어 등등 수 십 개의 언어가 사용된다. 다른 나라 출신 학생들에게는 영어로 대화하지만 자국인들끼리 모였을 때는 모국어를 쓰며 향수를 달래는 건 어쩔 수 없는 인간의 본성인 듯싶다.

글로벌 빌리지는 베이징 대학이 중국의 글로벌 거번넌스 정책에 부응하기 위해 지난 2008년 약 3만평의 대지에 9개동의 숙소와 부대시설을 지어 외국인 교수와 학생들을 위해 제공한 특수 목적 공간이다.
이곳에서 지내다 보면 중국의 글로벌 주도국가로서의 힘이 느껴진다.
아프리카와 중동지역은 물론 아시아와 남미에 이르기까지 전 세계 학자들과 학생 1천여명이 중국을 배우기 위해 글로벌 빌리지에서 생활하고 있다.
글로벌 빌리지는 마치 올림픽 선수촌을 연상시키는 구조다.
9개의 숙소동과 3개의 식당, 스포츠센터, 회의실, 편의점, 커피숍 등 독립적인 생활이 가능하도록 편의시설을 골고루 갖추고 있다.
필자가 거주하는 곳은 1호루라고 해서 교수급 외국인을 위한 전용 공간으로 5성급 호텔로 운영되고 있다.
매일 방 청소는 물론 뷔페식 레스토랑에서 아침이 제공되고 있다. 지금껏 살아오면서 두 달 넘게 호텔살이를 하는 것은 처음이다.

외국인들로 득실대는 글로벌 빌리지에서 가끔 한국어가 들리면 반가운 마음에 눈길이 가게 된다. 한국의 젊은이들이 중국을 배우기 위해 학부와 대학원에 유학 중인 것이다. 한 한국인 유학생은 몇 년전부터 한국인 유학생 수가 줄고 있다며 안타까워했다.
이곳에서 지내다 보면 중국의 글로벌 정책의 흐름을 느낄 수 있다. 곳곳에서 아프리카 출신 학생들이 삼삼오오 모여 모국어나 프랑스어로 대화하는 모습을 자주 볼 수 있다. 캠퍼스 안에는 이슬람교 학생들을 위한 전용식당도 있다. 지난 2013년 시진핑 주석이 '일대일로(一帶一路, One Belt One Road)' 정책을 표방한 이후 중국은 아프리카 국가들에게 엄청난 관심을 쏟고 있다. 철도와 항만, 도로 등 인프라 시설 투자에 천문학적인 돈을 투자하고, 아프리카 국가 출신 인재들을 초청해 유학시키고 있다. 베이징 대학에서 공부하고 돌아간 유학생들이 자국의 지도자가 되어 중국과 협력하기를 바라는 것이다. 이는 미국도 마찬가지이지만 중국 쪽이 훨씬 열의가 있다는 것이 글로벌 빌리지에서 피부로 느껴진다. 실제로 필자와 함께 지내던 아프리카 국가 출신 국제방문학자는 얼마 전 장관으로 임명돼 귀국하기도 했다.
이곳에서 만난 아프리카 출신 학자들 중 상당수는 한국에 깊은 관심을 보이고 있다. 그들은 가난했던 나라 한국, 전쟁을 치른 나라 한국이 단기간에 급속한 경제성장과 민주화를 이룬 과정을 궁금해 했다. 한국전 참전국가인 이디오피아 출신 멩게샤는 필자를 형제로 부르며 한국을 방문하고 싶다고 했다. 또 다른 아프리카 출신 학자는 베이징대 코스를 마치고 서울대에서 공부할 계획이라고 했다.
이곳 글로벌 빌리지에서도 'K-컬쳐'는 폭발적인 인기이다. '강남 스타일' 노래를 흥얼거리는 유학생부터 우다우커우(五道口) 한국식당을 즐겨 찾는다는 유학생까지 취향은 다양하지만, 그들이 한국을 좋아한다는 것은 고마운 일이다. 지난 11월6일 캠퍼스 안에서 열린 '베이징 대학의 글로벌 문화축제'에서도 한국 부스가 큰 인기를 끌었다.

글로벌 빌리지 1호루의 유일한 한국인으로 지내다 보니 어려울 때가 종종 있다. 그럴 때마다 달려와 도움을 주는 한국 학생이 있다. 구미 출신으로 공대를 다니는 공유빈양은 언제든 필요한 물품을 들고 달려와 도움을 주어 수양딸로 삼았다. 한국에게는 이런 청년들이 보석이다. 그래서 이태원 참사로 희생된 청년들이 아깝고 원통한 마음이다.
밤늦도록 불이 꺼지지 않던 글로벌 빌리지의 아침은 활기차다. 등교를 위해 전동차 시동을 거는 소리가 경쾌하다. 꼬리를 이어 달리는 자전거 행렬도 장관이다. 세계인의 꿈이 있는 곳, 베이징 대학의 글로벌 빌리지는 잠들지 않는다.

Opposite the Southeast Gate of Peking University is the Zhongguanxinyuan of Peking University. In English, the word “Global Village” means “global village”. It is an independent village with 9 lodgings in all.
Here, there is a global life where various races and ethnicities from all over the world live in harmony. Although English is inevitably used as the official language, dozens of languages are spoken, including Chinese, French, Korean, Russian, and African languages. I speak English to students from other countries, but it seems to be an unavoidable human nature to use the native language to appease nostalgia when we are together.
The Global Village is a special-purpose space provided by Peking University for foreign professors and students by building 9 lodgings and ancillary facilities on an area of about 30,000 pyeong in 2008 to meet China's global governance policy.
If you stay here, you can feel the power of China as a global leader. Around 1,000 scholars and students from all over the world, from Africa and the Middle East to Asia and South America, are living in the Global Village to learn Chinese.
The Global Village has a structure reminiscent of the Olympic Village. It has 9 lodging buildings, 3 restaurants, a sports center, meeting rooms, convenience stores, and coffee shops, all with convenient facilities for independent living. The place where I live is called Horu No. 1, so it is operated as a 5-star hotel as an exclusive space for foreign professors. The room is cleaned every day and breakfast is served at the buffet restaurant. This is the first time in my life that I have lived in a hotel for more than two months.
In a global village full of foreigners, if you hear Korean from time to time, your eyes will be drawn to your heart. Young Koreans are studying in undergraduate and graduate schools to learn China. A Korean student expressed regret that the number of Korean students had been declining for several years.
If you stay here, you can feel the flow of China's global policy. You can often see students from Africa come together and converse in their native language or French. There is also a dedicated canteen for Muslim students on campus. Since President Xi Jinping's 'One Belt One Road' policy in 2013, China has been paying great attention to African countries. We are investing astronomical amounts of money in infrastructure investments such as railways, ports, and roads, and we invite talented people from African countries to study abroad. It is hoped that international students who have returned from studying at Peking University will become leaders in their countries and cooperate with China. This is the same for the United States, but it is felt in the global village that the Chinese are much more enthusiastic. In fact, an international visiting scholar from an African country who was living with me recently returned home after being appointed Minister.
Many of the African scholars I met here show a deep interest in Korea. They wondered about the process of rapid economic growth and democratization in Korea, a country that was at war with a poor country in a short period of time. Mengesha, from Ethiopia, a country that participated in the Korean War, called the writer his brother and said that he wanted to visit Korea. Another African scholar said that he planned to study at Seoul National University after completing his Peking University course.
Here in the Global Village, 'K-Culture' is explosively popular. Their tastes vary from international students who hum the song 'Gangnam Style' to those who like to eat Korean restaurants in Udaukou, but it's nice to know that they like Korea. The Korean booth was also very popular at the 'Beijing University Global Culture Festival' held on November 6th inside the campus.
Being the only Korean in Global Village No. 1 is sometimes difficult. Whenever that happens, there is a Korean student who runs to help. Gong Yoo, a native of Gumi and attending an engineering college, came running to help whenever she needed items and made her her adopted daughter. For Korea, these young people are jewels. That is why the young people who died in the Itaewon disaster feel regretful and bitter.
The morning of Global Village, where the lights were not turned off late into the night, is lively. The sound of starting the train to go to school is pleasant. The procession of bicycles running along the tail is also spectacular. The Global Village of Peking University never sleeps, a place where people of the world dream.
