Daegu Health University's Department of Optics and Optics recently faced a double slope.

The Department of Optics and Optics at this university has recently been selected for the ‘3rd-Phase Industry-University-Research Collaboration Leading College Promotion Project (LINC 3.0)’ hosted by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, and opened a curriculum called ‘Vision Life Therapist’. This is to meet the aging society by establishing an industry-university-research cooperation system with the goal of cultivating talent tailored to industrial needs and strengthening support for corporate value creation.

In addition, the Department of Optometry was selected as the host university for the Higher Vocational Education Hub (HiVE) project hosted by the Ministry of Education. This project is to nurture specialists in the eyeglass industry, a specialized field in Daegu Buk-gu, in cooperation with the local government, and to promote the revival of the eyeglass industry in Daegu, and Daegu Health University's Department of Optics and Optics will take the lead.

Daegu Health University has secured 1.5 billion won in project cost for the first year of this year, and will receive 4.5 billion won for up to three years. The project cost will be used for △ nurturing experts in artificial intelligence (AI) convergence glasses who will lead the next-generation local eyewear industry, △developing new educational courses, building an educational ecosystem, and △ vitalizing the local eyewear industry through digital transformation manpower training.

Even now, nearly half a century after the first graduates graduated, inquiries from ophthalmology clinics, clinics and opticians to recommend graduates by department are continuing.

Professor Gye-hoon Choi (head of the department) said, “Until recently, Daegu and nearby large cities have been receiving requests for job recommendations for graduates, but it is difficult to enter because there are no unemployed students to send.”

Daegu Health University's Department of Optics and Optics was established in 1984 for the first time in the nation, and it is evaluated as the history of Korea's eyewear industry. Students from all over the country flocked to them, and after completing their studies, graduates returned to their hometowns and opened an optical shop.

Decades have passed, and now more than 1,000 alumni from Seoul to Jeju and Yeongnam to Honam have started their businesses and have taken root in the eyewear industry, naturally securing the largest employment opportunity in Korea. For this reason, Daegu Health University's Department of Optometry has as its alumni about 4,000 opticians who play a key role in the ophthalmic industry, opticians, and ophthalmology hospitals across the country.

Senior opticians from Daegu Health University are active all over the world

Due to the deep roots of history and tradition, graduates facing the global era are not only staying in Korea, but are continuing to challenge themselves to achieve their dreams across the sea. Jeong Dong-won, who entered the United States in 1997 after graduating from the Department of Optics and Optics, is the president of the Korean American Association in Utah. In 2020, he also had the honor of passing the American Optometrist (ABO) exam hosted by the American Eyewear Association. At the beginning of last year, he also passed the American contact lens test NCLE and is currently operating an optician in the United States.

Seo Dong-hoon (Class 10) alumni started working at CSC (Continental Sales Corporation), an eyewear company located in Watsonville, California, USA. In addition to this, many graduates have entered global companies such as Carl Zeiss Vision Korea, Johnson & Johnson Korea, and Essilor Korea.

After earning a doctorate in optometrist in Australia, Jung-ho Yoon (Chairman of Carl Zeiss Vision Korea Education Center) worked for Carl Zeiss, a global company, and devoted himself to training domestic opticians to improve their optometry skills, such as binocular examination, and visited juniors in his alma mater for special lectures. is also continuing.

Among the graduates of Daegu Health University's Department of Optics and Optics, there are many graduates who have achieved their dreams of nurturing future students through transfer and admission to graduate school. In addition to his alma mater, Daegu Health University, there are about 20 alumni currently serving as full-time professors in the Department of Optometry at universities in the metropolitan area, Gangwon, Honam, Yeongnam, and Busan. When the adjunct professors and visiting professors at each university are combined, the number of graduating alumni who contribute to nurturing the next generation reaches about 50.

In the past, employment or start-up in the field of eyeglasses shops, eyeglass business, and eyeglass frames and lenses distribution was the main focus. Analyzing the employment trends of graduates over the past five years, as the aging population accelerates and the demand for vision correction surgery such as LASIK and LASEK surges as well as geriatric diseases, employment at eye hospitals, which remained at less than 10% of graduates a few years ago, is increasing. The trend is increasing to 20-30% in the last two to three years as the focus is on ophthalmology hospitals such as Dongsan Hospital, Fatima Hospital, Nune Eye Clinic, and Metro Eye Center Eye Clinic.

After graduation, opticians, like doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, go through a national examination administered by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, obtain a license, and can work in an ophthalmic hospital or ophthalmology clinic. Unlike most health-related departments, the most attractive point is that you can start your own business.

A growing number of graduates are also successful in commercializing by entering the nationwide franchise business, breaking away from the way of operating an optical shop at the level of a local store in the past like a pharmacy. The CEOs of eyeglass chains such as Orens, Non-polar eyeglasses chain, and Eisentree, which have already established themselves on a national scale, are all graduates of Daegu Health University's Department of Optometry.

Urban Eyewear CEO Hee-Jun Lee (School of 2008) majored in glasses design and then entered the department of optical optics again to become an optician.

Alumni Park Sang-jin (School of 1994) established Star Vision Co., Ltd. and opened 325 contact lens stores in Korea, 8 in Hong Kong, and 8 in Taiwan. As a global company, it generates annual sales of 100 billion won. She recently launched the Karin glasses brand and grew up, providing scholarships to the department every year for her juniors and inviting them to O-Lens Academy to help them find employment. The Martial Arts Glasses/Contact Chain Headquarters (Son Jae-hwan, Class 88) and Igentry Chain Headquarters (Ma Yong-deok, Class 91) are also providing scholarships every year, participation in educational programs, and graduate employment, etc.

In order to adapt to the changing industrial environment, Daegu Health University's Department of Optics and Optics forms close ties with industry and shares information on new technologies and cutting-edge equipment in the industrial field through regular industry-academic meetings. Every year, the curriculum is developed and reorganized with a focus on the field, and classes are conducted focusing on educating students so that they can adapt to field work in the shortest time when they are put into the industrial field after graduation.

To become an optician, you must pass the national examination for opticians conducted once a year by the National Examination Institute for Health and Medical Professionals under the Ministry of Health and Welfare and obtain a license. In accordance with the Act on Medical Technicians, etc., only graduates of the Department of Optics and Optics are allowed to apply.

If you obtain an optician's license, you can find employment in related fields such as university hospitals, ophthalmology clinics, opticians, and contact lens specialty stores. The average passing rate of the national exam for the past five years is about 83.2% (the national exam pass rate is 10.1% superior to the national average pass rate). level is rather high.

The physical education environment is excellent, with different interiors and design points for each classroom and practice room so that students who enter through high competition do not feel tired of the educational environment. What sets it apart is that it is equipped with more than 20 latest equipment, such as an automatic oximeter and automatic ocular refraction meter, where you can experience various types of field training at a mock optician in the university, which boasts the best facilities in the region. point is a big advantage.

Courses for the establishment and management of glasses-related businesses such as entrepreneurship, CS theory and practice, opticians marketing, SNS marketing, optician start-up and management, capstone design regular classes and SMAT (service management certification) special lectures, along with preparation for the optician's national exam also proceed. Through regular courses such as eyeglass coordination, eyeglass display, and eyeglass product knowledge, as well as irregular classes such as personal color professional consultant certification and handmade eyeglass frame production, education to satisfy consumers of eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses, who are becoming more fashion-forward, is also provided. is being carried out

Apart from regular classes, through various non-regular programs such as American optometrist, SMAT (service management certification), personal color professional consultant certification, IACLE STE (internationally recognized contact lens) certification, and handmade glasses frame production, domestic and overseas employment, start-up, and ability as an eyewear expert are further enhanced. pulling up

Daegu Health University's Department of Optics and Optics is carrying out various volunteer activities to contribute to the improvement of public eye health in addition to the professional knowledge as an optician. Since 2009, we have provided glasses to over 1,500 students with professors and current students as well as alumni opticians for elementary school students in Gumi, who have refractive errors and must wear glasses at school age, but cannot properly manage their eyesight due to poor family conditions. With the support of the Alumni Association of the Department of Optics and volunteer activities for current students, about 100 low-income students from 12 elementary and middle schools within the Daegu Nambu Office of Education were also provided with finished glasses. Free vision tests and glasses are provided to middle and high school students near the university, with volunteer club students, professors, and alumni opticians, and free vision tests and magnifying glass support activities for local seniors jointly with Buk-gu Office are also ongoing. are doing

In addition to domestic volunteer activities, the department visits overseas regions with poor environmental conditions every year to provide medical services around the world through eye exams and eyeglass manufacturing. In Tulakum, about an hour away from Vientiane, the capital of Laos, an eye test and glasses were made for 400 residents, and glasses were made and provided free of charge to 250 local nomads at Terelj Hos Park, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We visited the Davawa Dhamma Center near Yangon, Myanmar, and conducted eye exams and eyeglasses customization for 250 local residents.

The Department of Optometry provides vocational education not only for current students but also for young people in the region, and supports them to settle in the region. .

Among the programs for them, in relation to the specialized field of 'glasses industry', △ 'personal color education course' and '2D eyeglass frame design curriculum', etc. Eyeglass Marketing Professional Training Course △ 'Vision Care for Both Eyes'
