Within 100 days of inauguration of President Yoon Seok-yeol, the slogan for resignation appeared, 'Wonderland?'

The scale of anti-government protests, a progressive civic group called 'candle action', is growing

August 17th is the 100th day since President Yun Seok-yeol took office. Countries with advanced political systems such as the United States call this period a “honeymoon period,” and refrain from criticism at all. However, in Korea, the slogan for the resignation of the president appeared less than 100 days after taking office as president, showing the aspect of a 'strange country'.

The anti-government protests led by the progressive civic group ‘Candlelight Action’ have been held every weekend since their first start on July 23. The 'candlelight action' refers to a growing number of protesters participating in anti-government demonstrations held by progressive civic groups near Cheonggyecheon-Seoul Station in Seoul. The group also held a demonstration on the afternoon of August 14. The number of protesters is increasing compared to the first demonstration, and the candlelight protesters chanted “Resign Yoon Seok-yeol” and “Special Prosecutor Kim Gun-hee” during the demonstration. The slogan for the premature resignation of the president echoed through the streets of central Seoul.

In a recently announced special statement titled “We will remove Seok-Yeol Yoon,” these groups said, “In less than 100 days since the inauguration of the president, the state of affairs is collapsing. In the first place, he fully foresaw the problems that the direct control of the prosecution would bring, but he went far beyond that. The result showed that the approval rating exceeded 20% and the negative evaluation exceeded 60%. The public's anger against it is increasing day by day. In this way, it is difficult to predict whether or not it will be possible to restore the power of government. In the meantime, the damage to the people will only increase.”

Concerns about the anti-government situation 100 days before the inauguration of the president have also been remarked. Park Ji-won, former head of the National Intelligence Service, said in a Facebook post on July 30, "It is reported that Acting People's Power Kwon Seong-dong has accepted the transition to the non-captain system. It's a very good decision. After that, the resignation of the Supreme Council member and the revision of the party constitution are secondary issues,” he said. If this goes on, domestic and international evaluations will be harsh. "I can't count the things that went wrong, such as a deadly human resource, fresh but mistaken door stepping, poor public management, such as the activities of the First Lady, lack of measures for the people's livelihood due to the Moon Jae-in government and circumstances, and the power struggle of the passport, such as gunshots within the ruling party," he said. pointed out In the era of global export competition, the country must be stable. However, under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, he has been creaking from the beginning of his administration.

During the 5-year administration of Moon Jae-in, the so-called “Taegeukgi Troops,” known as conservative civic groups, held anti-government protests demanding the release of former President Park Geun-hye. Anti-government protests took place almost every week. This protest earned the stigma of 'Korea is a country that protests'.

However, from the beginning of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, anti-government protesters began to hold anti-government demonstrations every weekend, again giving the impression of being a ‘protesting country’. Korea is a country with a majority vote. What is the logic of demanding that a president elected by a majority vote ‘step down’ as soon as he takes office? What does the alternating anti-government protests between conservatives and progressives mean? This is a sign of the extreme ideological division between conservatives and progressives. The government or political circles should promote policies for national unity and make efforts to unite the nation without being divided. moonilsuk@naver.com
