History of counting Sanskrit

- Lee Il-young, columnist

In linguistic classification, a language group is defined as a group of languages whose phylogeny and development are units. That is, it has the same meaning as Sanskrit is the ancestor of the Indo-European language family that spread across the region from India to Europe. Furthermore, Persian, Hindi and Urdu are spoken in the region from India to the Middle East. Languages such as Nepali and Kurdish are Indo-Iranian, a subclass of the Indo-European family.

The Sanskrit language erupted around 2000 BC (BC). This was divided as the language that accommodated various changes in the region and society achieved independent communication. The history of Sanskrit can be summarized as follows.

From around 1500 BC (BC), the Indo-Aryans who settled on the Indian subcontinent beyond Afghanistan were born in harmony with the gods worshiped by the indigenous peoples who worshiped other gods, and Rigveda, which collected praises and prayers of the gods around 1000 BC (BC) was born.

Prayers and praises transmitted orally for a long time met with the existing languages of the Indian subcontinent and brought about various changes, and the first phonetic script, Brahmi, was born. This is the history of the birth of the script written in Sanskrit (Devanagari), followed by a notation that combines syllable and Jamo characters (Abugida).

Based on this, the grammatical system of ancient Sanskrit was established in the (Eight Chapters) written by the Indian scholar Panini in the 4th century BC. American modern linguist Chomsky counted this as a pioneering history of syntax.

Unlike structuralism based on empiricism, the fact that Chomsky, the founder of transformational generative grammar based on rationalism, counted the words (words), which are the smallest completeness in the expression of spoken and written words, as the beginning of syntax, the meaning of connecting these words into sentences. Says something like: In his writings (the book of eight chapters), Panini established a system of grammar by arranging about 4,000 rules that make up sentences in Sanskrit.

It is a historical bridge from around 1500 BC to Classic Sanskrit from Vedic Sanskrit used in the period of the Vedic scriptures, the liturgical texts that laid the foundation for Brahminism for 500 BC. It is a classical Indian language that has been used as the language of major scriptures throughout history such as Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Jainism, and is commonly referred to as Sanskrit today.

As the 8th century passed, Islamic power began to flow into the Indian subcontinent with a long history. Finally, the era of the Islamic Empire began from 1206 to 1526, followed by the period of the Mughal Empire from 1526, and Sikhism, which spread Islamic mysticism and Hindu mystic ideas, was born in Punjab, northern India.

However, as Europeans who had been oppressed by Islamic powers for a long time began to gather in the forefront of Christian missions and trade, pioneering research based on the fact that Sanskrit, which had a long history, was similar to the language of Europe, continued endlessly.

A representative figure is Gaston Laurent Coerdoux (1691–1779), a French Catholic priest and scholar of India. Having excelled in languages, he worked as a missionary in India and developed his academic capabilities while studying with the Jesuit linguist Jean Calmet (1692–1740) and France’s first Indian scholar Ankhtil Duperon (1731–1805).

Based on this background, his French dictionary, which includes Sanskrit and Dravidian languages, including Telugu, a native language of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which consists of many islands in the Bay of Bengal, India, was an achievement of the times. Furthermore, he opened a pioneering horizon in comparative linguistics that studies similarity through comparison of differentiated languages of the same lineage. He summarized the special similarities of Sanskrit to Latin and Greek as well as German and Russian.

In this background, there was a passionate activity that gained a lot of insight through contact with the French sculptor and astronomer Nicholas de Lyle (1688–1768), who was closely related to the Russian Empire. Nicholas de Reyle was the person responsible for establishing the Astronomy School when the first emperor of the Russian Empire, Peter the Great, built St. Petersburg as the capital while pursuing a policy of westernization. In addition, as a collector with excellent insight in various fields, he went on an expedition to Siberia for astronomical observation and various studies and obtained valuable historical documents from a monastery with a long history.

Father Gaston Laurent Coerdoux, who devoted his life to various studies of the Sanskrit language, died in India. Later, Max Müller (1823-1900), an authority on philology and oriental studies, evaluated Laurent Coeurdoux's work as the father of comparative linguistics.

Laurent Coeurdoux's pioneering passion for the study of Sanskrit, an inflectional language whose word form changes according to the grammatical function of a sentence, was not recognized during his lifetime. Based on his research, Ankhtel Duperon (1735–1801), the first French Indian scholar and an authority on Avestan, an ancient Iranian language of the Indo-European family, or Jean-Antoine Dubuis (1766) devoted to humanitarian studies as a missionary to the Paris Foreign Mission Society ~1848) is also history.

Before Max Müller, who regarded Laurent Coerdoux's life devoted to the study of Sanskrit as the father of comparative linguistics, there was a person who valued Father Coeurdou highly. He was William Jones (1746-1794), the genius son of the mathematician Jones who gave birth to the symbol pi (π) for the circumference. He has the same name as his father, and historians have distinguished them by the oriental scholar William Jones.

As the founder of Britain's first Sanskrit study and anthropology, he was an important figure in British and Indian history. William Jones, such an orientalist, had deep awareness and consideration for the pioneering study of Sanskrit by Father Laurent Coerdoux. On this basis, the history of Max Müller's evaluation of Father Coerdoux as the father of comparative linguistics was born.

In addition, it was by a modern female scholar 200 years later that Fr. Coerdoux's fierce research achievements were evaluated more deeply. He was Sylvia Mur (1947-2002), a French female philosopher and thinker. From what he wrote in 1987 (The Dialectic and Science of Father Coeurdo, Father of Indian Studies) to a publication tribute to the scholarly research life (Indian Enlightenment), published in 2013 after the death of Silvia Mur, Sanskrit and the ancient languages of Europe Laurent Coeurdoux's pioneering work in figuring out the relationship between

In Korea, the study of Sylvia Mur, a French contemporary female scholar, devoted to her life is not known to the public at all. As if to prove this, there is no record of a single line of Korean searches on domestic search portals. My writing will be the first to introduce Sylvia Mur in Korean. I looked at all the research and writings of scholars through the databases of major European universities and materials distributed through Open Access Premium.

The influence of the Enlightenment, a river of history, exists at the root of the background of the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolution, which made a great turning point in world history. The Enlightenment was born strictly from the influence of theories arising from the scientific revolution and changes in culture and art that began in the Italian Renaissance. This deep awareness of the conditions of the times brought about by the Enlightenment makes Sylvia Mur cross the bridge she laid.

The story that began with a counting article about the genius scholar Park Geon-bae who went through a turbulent era does not mention him. You will meet them as you flow through the river of history. Next, we will take a look at William Jones, a genius orientalist, who opened a new horizon in the history of world culture by translating the ancient laws (Code of Manu). artwww@naver.com
