Interview with 'Sang-cheol Han, the eponymous poet', who published his 10th sijo book as if he was writing a 'period'

“Staying in three seasons and walking around, I will disappear as dust in the universe”

-Reporter Hyeyeon Kim

9 volumes of poetry collections released with ‘mountain’ as the topic… The topic of the 10th poem collection is not 'mountain' but 'all things.'

Since 2001, a total of 2468 sijos, Chinese poems, and free poems have been forged with the grammar of ‘Rated Dansijo’

As if putting a period, “I end my life journey by ending ‘Soyo’”… Disclose the truth of the corpse donation

“After wandering for a while in time, space, and the so-called three-way, I disappear as dust in the universe. I am endlessly grateful to Mother Nature and my parents, including the sky and the earth who gave birth to me. Since I wasn't there, I go back to that place, but I dream that traces of thought exist even as a soul. The rain that hastened spring falls on the apricot tree, moistening the clothes. All three things! Forever!”

The progenitor poet Han Sang-cheol writes in his poem collection <逍遙 (Soyo)>, which weaves his short poems, as follows:

The reason for choosing the title of the poem collection ‘Soyo’

He is a climber and eponymous poet who recites a profound 'philosophy of the mountain' in just three lines. The poet insists on only the rated short sijo, that is, the three-line sijo.

“The reason I write short poems is because of compressed beauty. Maybe it's because the great man is simple, but I don't like too much finesse in sentences. It's good to hit the core at once, and it's good to have a musical element. Sijo thinks that one sleep is enough, so he writes only three lines. Japanese haiku, the shortest formal poem in the world, has only 17 syllables, but it is said that it can contain all things.

Since the poet published <Sanjungmundap (山中問答)>, a collection of short poems expressing the thoughts and moods of climbing a mountain by borrowing the form of questions and answers in 2001, he has been putting topics and insights about mountains into the rated Dansijos.

“Countless. There is no end to 'mountain'. San has never bent down on his back, but the one on the right is proud to say that he stepped on his head. The composition that risked my life! A level that cannot be achieved without going crazy! Oh, how wonderful it would be to know the mountain even after being buried in a graveyard.”

However, the topic of the tenth collection of short poems presented by Han Sang-cheol this time is not 'mountain' but 'all things.' After much deliberation, the title was decided as ‘Soyo’, which means to move around freely. However, the emphasis is placed on the meaning of ‘enjoying the rest of your life’ rather than ‘walking around’.

The poet expresses the feelings of quietly feeling things in scenic places such as Mt. Yeongchuk and Jaein Falls, including earthworms, coltsfoot, bald eagles, apartment noises that uniquely unravel the inner world, and even the nagging of his wife… . It contains 269 Dansijo songs that sang all kinds of objects and phenomena in the universe.

“A black waterfall that stopped breathing after falling straight down / The fall is sixty-five.

“The tree that laughs when the wind tickles / The lotus flower hums like hummingbirds / The monkey slaps his butt while sliding /”

“Skinny, single-celled chattering / Motari spit out nutmeg letters / disappearing like a fart in hot pants /” -Apartment Summer Arirang

“At the place where the flowers have faded, age spots are blooming/My wife’s sincerity has been nurtured at the table full of swear words/Even if the green onion is drooping, it’s as sweet as a cherry/”- Wife’s nagging table

“First of all, the Sijo should be as cool as the flowing water. When something gets stuck or clogged, it feels stuffy. To do that, you must add a musical element to your writing. In other words, it has to be half a song. If you read aloud or recite it vigorously, your breath will naturally divide and you will be excited, and then it should flow naturally as if you were playing a sijo. Moreover, it is even better if there is an appropriate counter and the front and back phrases are in harmony.”

In that way, Han Sang-cheol released 10 books of poetry, 1 volume of Chinese poetry, 1 volume of haiku, and 1 volume of aphorisms. With his own grammar called 'Rated Dansijo', he densely forged a total of 2468 Sijos, Chinese Poems, and Free Poems.

The poet helps the reader understand by annotating each poem he recites. It's good, but on the other hand, some birds are so noisy that they wake them up." To make it a hundred years old, there must be concessions and tolerance. No matter how much you do, even the flower (wife) will wither over time.”

The last chapter of this collection of poems is decorated with ‘Korean Haiku 5 phrases’. It sensibly captures and depicts a unique Japanese short poem with 17 characters in 3 parts of 5, 7, and 5 in the ‘Han Sang-cheol style’.

Dreaming to exist even as a soul

As if to put a period in the latter part of this collection of poems, the poet savagely states, “He ends his life’s journey by ending ‘Soyo’.” In addition, as if he was nailed to the fact that he registered for a body donation at a medical school in May 2005 and the registration of refusal to receive life-sustaining treatment in advance, with a four-legged 'remnant' (餘滴, ink left after writing or painting) It's making the viewer feel moved.

“I am now seventy-six. In December of last year, he became ill and was hospitalized for over ten days. After being discharged from the hospital on January 1 of this year, I felt the value of my existence again in a life that had many ailments and many twists and turns, and my heart was busy. It's a pity that I couldn't cultivate a successor to the dynasty. After I go, the pulse of the rated dansijo will disappear. With the thought that it will be the last, this collection of sijo was made with great effort. Even though he is not financially wealthy, he used expensive paper while publishing his own poetry book, and the binding was done in high-quality hardcover. Because even after I die, the Sijojib will not disappear.”

The poet who declared 'I was not there before, so I will return to that place' in Kwondusa's 'Soyo' later mentioned the old saying 'Gongdan-eupsim(綆短汲深)' mentioned in the eldest son, and said, "A short rope string, a deep well spring. It is not unusual even to say, “I can’t grow the .”

Is it because he dreams that the traces of staying in the three seasons and thinking exist even as a soul? The poet's insight and wit are well blended in the short poem titled 'Old pine of Jogyesan Seonamsa', which Han Sang-cheol placed on the wing of the book.

“I practice endlessly, but when I stand up, it’s in my room/ A sage-in-law is a clean cook and cook/Kwan-yin in heaven/Even if you wink while lying down, don’t sit down”
