(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 인천시가 가로변 수벽으로 많이 식재돼 있는 쥐똥나무의 전정시기를 5월에서 6월로 전환해 시민들이 좀 더 오래 쥐똥나무의 향기를 느낄 수 있도록 한다고 밝혔다.
수벽은 도로과 인도 사이의 울타리로, 작은 나무를 심어 만든 벽을 말한다.
쥐똥나무는 4월부터 6월까지 나팔처럼 길쭉한 모양의 작은 흰색 꽃들이 다발로 피는 꽃으로, 향기가 짙은 것이 특징이다.
인천시 내 관내 수벽은 약 75만m에 달하며, 그 중 쥐똥나무 수벽은 약 12.8만m이다.
그동안 인천시는 쥐똥나무를 다듬는 전정작업을 5월에 실시해 왔으나 올해는 쥐똥나무의 꽃과 향기를 시민들이 좀 더 오래 즐길 수 있도록 꽃이 지는 6월로 전정시기를 늦추기로 했다.
전정시기를 한 달여 가량 늦추게 되면 전정작업에 필요한 예산도 줄어 약 7천만 원의 예산절감 효과도 있어 이 같은 쥐똥나무 수벽 관리방식 개선은 전국 최초로 시도되는 일이다.
박세철 시 녹지정책과장은 “집 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 쥐똥나무의 꽃향기가 멀리까지 은은하게 퍼지나가 코로나19로 지친 시민들의 마음을 달래줄 수 있기를 희망한다”고 말했다.
