A vicious crime case that kidnapped and forcibly converted a believer “in this age of civilization...”

“Shincheonji Church of Jesus kidnapped conversion education case… inhumane and inhumane acts that were even violent”

-Publisher Il-suk Moon

My office is located in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Right in front is Seosomun Park in Jung-gu. In this park, a memorial was built to collect materials about the persecution of Catholics. The persecution of Catholics was, in a word, religious-religious oppression that one could have according to freedom of conscience. I often think of religious freedom when I see the site where these historical materials are collected.

According to the history of Catholic persecution compiled by Catholicism (Catholicism), the first incident of persecution occurred in 1791 (the 15th year of King Jeongjo, the year of Shinhae). This case is called the Shinhae Persecution Case. Yoon Ji-chung (1559–1791) and Kwon Sang-yeon (1751–1791), who are called the first martyrs, were beheaded on the pretext of refusal to perform ceremonies. There is also the Sinyu Persecution that took place in 1801 (the 1st year of King Sunjo, the year of Shinyu). It was persecution to block Catholicism (Catholicism). About 300 people were executed at the time. There is also Kihae Persecution in 1839 (the 5th year of King Heonjong, the year of Gihae). In 1846 (the 12th year of King Heonjong's reign), there is also the Byeongohbakdo. At this time, Father Kim Dae-geon was beheaded. In 1866 (the 3rd year of King Gojong), the Byeongin persecution caused many casualties. “A maximum of 8,000 to about 10,000 Catholics were executed,” it is claimed.

If we look at the persecution of Catholics at this point in time when religious freedom is guaranteed, we discover the ignorance and barbarity of the people of that time. However, in the age of religious civilization in which religion was developed or in the age of legal freedom of religion, incidents of barbarism are occurring one after another.

A press release from the Shincheonji Church of Jesus on January 6th titled “Illegal forced conversion that prevails even in a pandemic era” said, “Even in the pandemic situation of Corona 19, illegal forced conversion that tramples on individual human rights is still on the rise like a poisonous mushroom.” In late November 2021, Mr. A (33 years old, female), who attended Shincheonji Jesus Church in Chungju, said that he was going on a family trip, and lost contact for a while. There was an incident where he was released from captivity. Fortunately, we were able to rescue Mr. A, who was imprisoned in a pension in Jeolla-do, within 6 days of losing contact with the Shincheonji Church and the police.”

It is also revealed that there are other incidents. This press release stated, “On December 21, 2021, a woman in her 20s living in Namyangju was kidnapped for compulsory conversion education just because she attended the Shincheonji Church, and then escaped after 17 days with the help of her older brother. happened. On December 4, around 11 o'clock in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, the brother of Miss P (24) who lost contact at an apartment in Pyeongyeong, was looking for her brother, and through the CCTV of the apartment, at around 1 am on the same day, Miss P joined the mother's church again with her parents. By confirming that he was forcibly abducted by two kwons and three men, and reporting it to the police, the whole story of the incident was revealed.”

“It is known that Ms. P was obsessively forced to convert while in captivity after being kidnapped, but when she wrote an agreement that she did not want to receive follow-up education, she was given time to go home for a while, and at this time she was able to escape dramatically with the help of her brother. "Miss P said, 'They are abducted and imprisoned just because they have a different religion, forcibly converted against one's will, and in the face of the reality that sophisticated criminal acts of violating freedom and human rights are still being perpetrated in our society. The shock does not go away,' he added.

What is ‘compulsory conversion education’? Religion is a choice you can choose according to your freedom of conscience. You are free to believe in any religion. However, just because they believe in a particular religion, “inhumane and inhumane acts in which the member’s family and relatives use illegal means to imprison the member, force him to convert, and even use violence” are taking place.

An official from the Shincheonji Church of Jesus said, “We have seen some cases before, but even if the police are dispatched to the scene after receiving a report regarding forced conversion education, if the family of the abducted believer lives together or accompanies them and says ‘family death,’ the situation is often ended without any action.” He appealed and pointed out that “the government’s response to the human rights blind spot related to forced conversion is urgent.”

In the Republic of Korea, where religious freedom is guaranteed, it is difficult for families to continue to cause mistrust among family members and infringe on human rights. The kidnapping case of forced conversion is a serious crime that cannot be overlooked. Whatever the reason, these kinds of events should not happen again.

This incident will not be limited to Shincheonji Church of Jesus. It could be a crime in the blind spot. Legal action by the judicial authorities against these criminals is urgent. moonilsuk@naver.com
