필자는 요즘 서울 종로구 인사동(정확히는 관훈동)에 한 주 3-4일 나간다. 지난 달 6일 코바코(방송광고진흥공사) 사장에서 물러난 다음부터 그렇다. 이 곳에는 만들다! 한 마디로 '은퇴한 언론인들을 위해 최적화(最適化)된 공간' , 우리 스스로 '집현전(集賢殿)'이라 이름지은 '정신영 회관'이 있기 때문이다. 4층 건물인 이 회관의 1층은 고(故) 정신영(鄭信永) 기자를 위한 갤러리이다. 31살 짧은 나이로 세상을 떴지만 그가 살아온 족적(足跡), 특히 관훈클럽 창립 때의 사진이랄지 기자생활의 편린(片鱗)들이 가득히 모여 있다.
2층은 손님들 맞는 응접실, 회의실, 오락실과 장서실 등으로 잘 꾸며져 있다.
그리고, 저희들이 가장 아끼는 공간인 3층에는 컴퓨터실, 신문잡지 독서실, 작은 카페와 함께 20개의 '개인책상'이 놓여있는 이른바 '집필실'이 있다. 모든 시설이 공용(共用)이나 이 책상만큼은 개인용이다. 이 공간에서 책도 보고 글도 쓰고 하다가, 컴퓨터 쓸 일이 있으면 컴퓨터실로 가면 되고, 팩스를 쓰려면 팩스실로 가면 된다. 코로나19 이전에는 이 책상 얻기 경쟁도 심했지만 지금은 그렇지는 않다. 커피를 비롯한 모든 음료는 회관 측에서 무료로 제공한다. 그야말로 무료로 사용하는 '완벽한 개인사무실'이다.

무엇보다 이 곳이 좋은 것은 주소지는 관훈동이지만 실제로는 인사동 한복판 골목(수도온누리 약국 맞은 편)에 있기 때문에 지인들과 가성비(價性比) 높은 인사동 식사를 즐길 수 있다는 점이다. 대략 1만5천원에서 2만원이면 괜찮은 한정식을 먹을 수 있다.
이제 이 회관이 어떻게 생겨났는지를 기술하려 한다. 언론인들 외에는 잘 모르는 히스토리이다. 현대그룹 창업자인 고(故) 정주영 회장은 자녀도 8명이나 두었지만 그 자신도 7남매의 장남이었다. 강원도 통천(通川, 지금은 이북) 출신인 그는 초등졸업이 학력의 전부였다. 평소 "나는 소년 시절 동아일보로 공부했다"는 말을 자주 했다. 실제로 그는 동네 이장 집에 유일하게 우편으로 들어오는 동아일보를 매일 저녁 이장집에 찾아가 한두시간씩 빌려 읽었다고 한다. 그러다가 18살 때 아버지가 소 판 돈을 훔쳐 서울로 달아났고, 싸전과 자동차 수리업소를 차례로 차리며 현대그룹의 기반을 이루었다. "동아일보를 읽으며 자랐다"고 하는 그는 다섯째 동생인 정신영(鄭信永-1931-1962)을 특히 사랑했고 , 그가 공부를 잘 해 서울법대를 졸업하자 형의 권유로 동아일보 기자가 되게했다. 여기까지는 해피(행복한) 스토리이다.

정신영 기자가 사망하자 정주영 회장은 너무 슬퍼한 나머지 일주일 동안 회사에 출근하지 않고 울었다고 한다. 정주영 회장의 단장(斷腸)의 슬픔은 그의 자서전에도 적나라하게 적혀 있다.
"나는 신영이를 특별히 좋아한다는 것도, 기대가 크다는 것도, 자랑스러워 한다는 것도 단 한번도 말하고 표현하지 못한 게 평생 후회 된다".

고 정신영 기자의 부인 장정자 여사(1935년 생)는 서울현대학원 이사장이며, 슬하에 1남1녀가 있다. 동생이 떠난 뒤 정 회장은 언론계를 위해 여러 가지 뜻있는 일을 한다. 먼저 거액을 내놓아 '신영기금'을 만들고 언론인의 해외연수와 언론활동을 도왔다. 이어 동생이 고 박권상, 조세형 님 등 한국 언론계의 거목(巨木)들과 함께 '관훈클럽'을 만들었던 터에 '정신영 회관'을 지어 기증하고, 은퇴 언론인들의 보금자리로 쓰도록 했다.
