브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 윤석열 검찰총장이 4일 총장직 사의 의사를 공식적으로 표명했다.
윤석열 총장은 이날 오후 2시 서울 서초구 대검찰청 현관 앞에서 취재진들에게 "저는 오늘 총장을 사직하려 한다. 이 나라를 지탱해온 헌법정신과 법치 시스템이 파괴되고 있다. 그 피해는 고스란히 국민에게 돌아갈 것이다"고 말했다.
그는 "저는 이 사회가 어렵게 쌓아 올린 정의와 상식이 무너지는 것을 더는 두고 볼 수 없다"면서 "검찰에서 제가 할 일은 여기까지다"고 밝혔다.
이어 그는 "그러나 제가 지금까지 해온 것과 마찬가지로 앞으로도 어떤 위치에 있든 자유민주주의를 지키고 국민을 보호하기 위해 힘을 다하겠다"면서 "그동안 저를 응원하고 지지해주신 분들, 그리고 제게 날 선 비판을 해주신 분들께 감사드린다"고 했다.
윤 총장은 '사퇴 이후 정치권 입문 계획이 있나', '사의 발표가 중대범죄수사청 논의에 어떤 효과가 있는가' 등의 이어진 질문에는 답변을 하지 않고 자리를 떠났다.

한편, 지난 2019년 7월25일 제43대 검찰총장으로 취임한 윤 총장은 임기를 142일 남겨두고 전격 사의했다.
조국 전 법무부장관 일가 의혹을 수사하며 정부여당과 사이가 틀어졌다는 평가를 받았다. 이어 추미애 전 법무부장관 취임 이후에는 더욱 갈등이 심해진 양상을 보였다. 최근에는 여당을 추진하고 있는 중대범죄수사청(수사청) 설치 등에 대해 비판 수위를 높여왔다.
윤 총장은 수사청 설치 논의가 시작됐을 때부터 측근들에게 직까지 걸고서 맞서겠다는 의사를 밝힌 바 있다. 지난 1일에는 언론 인터뷰를 통해 "직을 걸 수 있다면 100번이라도 걸어서 막겠다"고 했다.
